CES 2009: OQO Model 02+ Looks Amazing with that Touch OLED Screen

SONY DSC Rob is getting ready to head out to a meeting with the folks at OQO to talk about the new Model 02+ with that OLED touchscreen. We’re all excited to see this in action and anxious to hear what Rob has to say. We’ll obviously be following this very closely, but in the meantime, the gang at Gizmodo has some pictures up that make this look very similar but also quite enticing. Every time I ever picked up and OQO (remember OQO sponsored our CES coverage last year) I wanted to touch that screen. Also enticing is the $1500 price point, but we’ll have to see what that includes.

6 Cell Battery Available on Lenovo S10e Netbook

When I met with Lenovo yesterday, they showed off their new 6 cell battery for their S10e Netbook. The S10e is targeted to the education and government, and can only be ordered by contacting a sales rep at Lenovo. The model number is 4187-3AU and comes with the following configuration:

  • Intel Atom N270, 1.6 ghz
  • 1 GB memory
  • 10.1” WSVGA
  • 80 GB HDD
  • Bluetooth
  • XP Home
  • 6 Cell Battery

Although it desperately needs to be, the 6-cell is not available for the regular S10 notebook.

Toshiba’s CES 2009 Press Conference – No Tablet PC or Netbook Love

Truc and I are at the Toshiba press conference. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear we’ll be seeing a new Tablet PC or Netbook from Toshiba this week. Their USB press kit contains just TVs, TV/DVD combos, and stand alone players. As is always the case with CES, that may change as the day and week progresses on.

We were also at the LG press conference earlier in the day – no love there, either. We still plan on hitting up their booth, though.

EMTEC Launches the Gdium Netbook

clip_image001EMTEC is joining in on the Netbook scene with the release of the Gdium.  This netbook has some similar specs of some other netbooks but offers one unique feature:

Unique to the Gdium is the G-Key, a bootable USB key on which the Linux operating system, applications and personal data are stored. The G-Key allows each user to store their personal information and preferences securely, without leaving a trace on the computer.

Kind of a cool twist on things if you ask me.  Below are the specs for what you get for under $400.00

  • 2.6 pounds
  • 9.8 x 7.2 x 1.25 inches
  • Web-optimized 1024 x 600 resolution
  • 10-inch screen

Leadership Changes Afoot at Motion Computing

I just got off the phone with Motion Computing and they have announced some leadership changes at the top of the company. Scott Eckert has resigned as CEO, being replaced by David Altounian. In addition to serving as CEO, David will be joined by Eric Harslem as co-chairmen of the board. In addition to these structure changes, and the recently announced $6 million in funding, Motion also confirmed that there were also additional layoffs.

Here is the press release:

Motion Computing®, a leader in mobile computing and wireless communications, announced today that it has appointed David Altounian as chief executive officer and co-chairman of the board of directors, effective immediately. Eric Harslem, an original Motion investor and founding board member, will also serve as co-chairman of the board.

Altounian, the founding member of Motion’s executive team, rejoined the company in July 2008 as president and chief operating officer. From 2001 to 2005 he held several leadership roles at Motion. Prior to joining the board, he focused on technology strategy and future products as chief technology officer, and before that oversaw both marketing and engineering functions. As COO, David assumed responsibility for many of Motion’s day-to-day activities, including strengthening critical relationships with key technology and development partners.

Touch Sensitive Products Dominate CES Unveiled

IMG_1623 Tonight, Rob, Sierra and I were at CES Unveiled and noticed that a significant number of manufacturers are incorporating touch technology in their latest and greatest releases. It seemed as though you couldn’t walk around the Unveiled show floor without being within eyesight of another touch sensitive product. The usual suspects are all in on the touchy fun: MSI has their new NetOn touchscreen all-in-one desktop computer, Asus is expanding their EEE PC line with resistive touchscreen tablets in both 8.9″ and 10″ varieties, Lenovo has their tablet with touch, Logitech has their touch-based universal remote… and the list goes on and on.

HP Universal Docking Station and DisplayLink Powering Up To 6 Displays – Video Demo

IMG_1643 We saw a very cool HP Universal Docking Station, that has supposedly been announced but I have not seen mention of it, that allows graphics over USB, powering up to 6 external monitors. According to the rep, it uses a technology from DisplayLink Corp to make this happen.

In this video, an HP Mini 1000 Netbook is demoed displaying 3 external monitors that are connected to the HP Universal Docking Station. Very, very cool stuff, especially considering a netbook is connected to all of that stuff. Now, we just need more USB based monitors…

PowerMat Allows Wireless Charging of All Your Gadgets

IMG_1633 One of the more crowded and active booths at CES Unveiling was the PowerMat wireless recharging station. The concept has been around for a while now, but this was my first experience with this technology. The process is quite simple: place your device of choice in the various charging adapters (what PowerMat calls “receivers”) and place the receiver with the device onto the PowerMat. The advantage of this setup is to minimize the amount of cords running around your workspace as well as minimizing the bulkiness of traditional chargers for the mobile professionals. The PowerMats come in different sizes and can charge a variety of things, ranging from iPhones and iPods to Blackberries, Motorola Razrs, and even regular AA batteries.

Asus Eee PC Touch Tablets On Video

We got an Asus rep to show off their Asus Eee PC tablet prototypes - both the 10″ and 8.9″ - they wouldn’t turn them on, but you get to see the keyboards better and in more action than photos.

No word on release date or price, but the rep is clearly excited about their new tablet netbooks.

Lenovo S10 Instant Boot Demoed On Video

I just finished a meeting with Lenovo, and they demoed the new instant boot feature of the S10 Netbook. It is running the Splashtop OS, whom we also plan to meet with this week. Watch the video above. I also ask the S10 product manager about needed improvements to keyboard.

Lenovo A600 Air Remote Demoed

Lenovo’s new all-in-one, the A600, has a nifty new feature: the remote has built-in VOIP features and its new accelerometer lets allows you to play ping pong, and such, like you do on the Wii. I tried it out and it feels just like playing on the Wii. Check out the video demo.

Buffalo NAS Allows Browser Access, Officially Supports iPhone

One of the main complaints about the iPhone is its inability for storage space expansion. Buffalo just released a solution to this problem with their LinkStation Pro NAS at MacWorld. With the LinkStation Pro, iPhone users can access up to 1TB of storage remotely by using the iPhone’s web browser. With AT&T’s 3G network, I can see how this is a wonderful possibility for viewing movies, pictures, music, etc. from almost anywhere. Continue reading
