It looks like the iPad 3 will be announced in just a few weeks and probably available soon after that. So now’s the time to think about reselling your iPad or iPad 2 so you can put that money toward the new model.

Whenever you sell your electronics to a reseller (or even return an item to the store after having used it), you should always be sure to erase the data from it completely. You can’t count on the reseller or the store employees to do it for you.

Erasing data from the iPad is easy, as is backing up that data to transfer to your new tablet.

First, back up the data, even if you’re not going to get a new iPad.

How To Back Up Your iPad

Step 1: Open iTunes, then connect the iPad to your computer with the USB cord. The device will appear in the sidebar on the left.

Step 2: Click on the iPad’s name to bring up the information window. Scroll down until you see the Backup section.

You can back up your iPad’s data to your computer or to iCloud. I do both just in case something goes wrong with one or the other.

If you back up to your computer you can protect that data with a password. Just don’t forget it!

Step 3: Once you choose where to backup, right-click on the iPad’s name in the sidebar and choose Back Up from the menu.

Step 4: iTunes will begin transferring data including images, videos, apps, purchases, etc.

When the backup is complete, unplug the tablet. You’re now ready to erase it.

How To Erase Data And Factory Reset The iPad

Step 1: Go to the Settings app. Scroll down to the bottom of the General settings area to find Reset.

Step 2: There are several options in this menu. The one you want is “Erase All Content And Settings.”

Step 3: The iPad will ask you to confirm that you want to do this. Tap Erase.

The iPad will delete all of the data on it, restart, and be just as it was out of the box. Be sure to turn it all the way off before shipping or returning it.

When you get your new iPad you can restore the data and apps from your old one by right-clicking and choosing “Restore From Backup.”

Will the Nikon D800 live up to your low light expectations? New Nikon D800 sample images are giving us a hint of how the new DSLR will perform in low light and with high ISO settings.

We’ve already taken a look at standard Nikon D800 sample photos, but those were shot at ISO 100 with ideal lighting situations. A lot of photographers need to shoot in the wild and don’t have the privilege of perfect light and stationary subjects. The Nikon D800 is getting some heat for not having the same sensor and ISO range as the Nikon D4, which is Nikon’s $6,000 flagship DSLR, but will it matter for most photographers?

Russian review site Ferra.ru got its hands on an early Nikon D800 review unit and tested how useful the Nikon D800 is at various ISOs. Unfortunately, they’ve only had a chance to shoot a few still life, but this is the first time we’ve seen what the Nikon D800 can do with ISO 800, ISO 3200, ISO 6400 and ISO 25,600.

(Read :Nikon D800 Sample Photos Are Mind Blowing)

Most photographers will rarely venture north of ISO 3200 or ISO 6400 and many question the need for something as high as ISO 25,600. There are a couple of reasons why potential Nikon D800 buyers are making a fuss over this. The Nikon D800 has the same ISO range as the Nikon D700, a camera that was released more than three years ago. The recently introduced Nikon D4 has a maximum ISO setting of 204,800.

The Nikon D800 packs a whopping 36.3 megapixels into it FX (35mm diagonal), which is more than double the resolution of the D4 and triple of the D700. More pixels spread over the same area equals a higher pixel density, which can be bad news when trying to shoot in dim conditions. Despite popular belief, more pixels isn’t necessarily better for all purposes.

(Read: Nikon D800: Amazing Sample Video)

So how does the Nikon D800 actually perform in low light and at high ISOs? Check out the below D800 sample photos.

Nikon D800 Sample Photo - ISO 800, 1/250 sec, f1.8, NIKKOR 50mm f1.8 G lens (click image for high res sample photo)

In this sample photo you can clearly see that Nikon D800 is up to the task for shooting still life scenes at ISO 800. Wedding and event photographers will likely be able to shoot in this range with natural light without any issue at all.

100% NIkon D800 Sample Image at ISO 800

Here’s a 100% crop of the flower petals. Here you can see how the Nikon D800 handles shadows at ISO 800. Not bad at all considering how small this part of the image will be on most prints and displays.

Nikon D800 Sample Photo ISO 3200, f2.2, 1/3200 sec. (Click for high res version)

Above is an example of shooting at ISO 3200 with the Nikon D800. Again, it’s a perfectly usable image for publishing online or printing at a reasonable size.

100% Crop Nikon D800 Sample Image ISO 3200

But when you zoom in to view this Nikon D800 sample at 100% on a computer you can see noise in both the shadows and the curtains. You can see that there’s noise in the shadows and on the brass and the lines don’t appear as crisp.

100% Crop Nikon D800 Sample Image ISO 3200

In the white curtains you can see significant noise at 100% crop. Keep in mind that the Nikon D800′s ridiculously large megapixel count means this noise will only be visible when printing massive prints or heavily cropping/zooming.

Nikon D800 Sample ISO 6400

Here’s a nice shot of a chandelier with the Nikon D800 set at ISO 6400. Nothing wrong with this ISO if you’re presenting your work online.

Nikon D800 Sample Photo ISO 6400

Stepping up to ISO 6400 you can see more noise when zoomed in, especially in the background behind the chandelier.

NIkon D800 Sample Photo ISO 100, f1.8, 1/160 sec. (Ciick for high-res image)

This Nikon D800 was shot at the minimum – ISO 100. As expected, there’s no noise at all and details are crisp and clear at 100% crop.

Nikon D800 Sample, 100% Crop ISO 100

Here’s what the camera on the table looks like up close and personal. Note that you can clearly read the text imprints and how clean the lines and edges appear on the focus ring. The white on the hot shoe mount is bright and the blacks are nice and clean.

Nikon D800 high ISO 25600 Sample Image

This is the same shot, but the Nikon D800 is set to 25,600 ISO. Even at this extremely reduced size you can see that there’s a ton of noise and the overall image quality is much lower.

Nikon D800 Sample at ISO 25,600

As you can see in this crop, there’s a ridiculous amount of noise and it’s difficult to make out individual lines. It might be ok to shoot at this kind of ISO if you’re willing to put in some serious time in post production or if you’re going for an artistic look of some kind, but you’ll want to avoid ISO 25,600 on the Nikon D800 in almost all cases. There may be the odd time that you will have to max out your ISO on the D800, but if you are that worried about shooting in low light you or at ultra-high ISOs you might want to save up some cash and buy the Nikon D4.

We still haven’t seen any sample action shots or event photography at high ISO from Nikon or other earlier reviews. If you’re holding off on buying the Nikon D800 due to concerns about low light and high ISO performance we recommend waiting until more samples are available or you get your hands on the camera next month.

One thing that won’t change in the next month is that the Nikon D800 maxes out at four frames per second, which is less than half the speed of the D4. You can add a vertical grip to bring performance up to six frames per second, but that still won’t be fast enough for some sports and wildlife photographers. The Nikon D800 is an amazing camera, but there are compromises to consider.

How would you like it if your work bought its employees iPads to replace one of your tools? I would be pretty stoked myself. Where I work, I serve big data pipes to business using late 90s technology to administer it all. In all fairness, I got a fairly new desktop recently. Anyhow, this is just what it seems like the US Air Force is doing. They are trying to purchase 18,000 iPads for flight crew members with plans to replace paper manuals and charts.

According to NexGov, the Air Force has put a requisition for 18,000 iPads or an “Equal Device”. Those unfamiliar with how things work in the US Government, they have to put things like this out for a bid unless things have changed a ton since I served in the US Navy. The bid process is a set time and whatever company bids lowest to delivery the product or services wins the contract. This brings back bad memories of Gateway in the early 90s… oh and Unisys.

The source article has been amended to indicate that the “Equal Device” part. I would assume the article was originally written stating they were just looking for 18,000 iPads.

AMC said in a notice posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website Thursday that it planned to buy “a minimum of 63 and a maximum of 18,000, iPad 2, Brand Name or Equal devices” for the crews that fly cargo aircraft such as the C-5 Galaxy and C-17 Globemaster. Lt. Col. Glen Roberts, AMC public affairs director, said the command “is looking for a tablet device, not necessarily an iPad.”

The command intends to issue a request for proposals at an unspecified date to buy the tablets at the lowest price through a firm, fixed price, indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract.

18,000!!! If they decide on the lowest iPad 2 model, that’s 9 million dollars. Sure, just print some more money and do that! Of course, with that many devices purchased, I could imagine that they won’t pay full $499 retail, assuming they actually get iPad 2 as the tablet. Imagine if Coby wins the contract? That would be awesome!

The initial batch of Nikon D800 and D800 pre-orders appear to already be sold out at Amazon.com. The online retail giant posted pre-order pages for Nikon’s hot new $3,000 DSLR just yesterday. Those who took a day to decide if they were going to pull the trigger are already out of luck.

We don’t know exactly how many Nikon D800 and D800E units Amazon plans to ship on launch day, but it’s likely a significant number. Whatever that number is it’s not enough to satisfy the hoards of Nikon photographers waiting to get a piece of its 36.3 megapixel glory.

As of early this morning, Amazon shoppers could pre-order the Nikon D800 and D800 from this Amazon.com page. Sometime between then and now, Amazon switched out the pre-order option for an email notification option. Instead of being able to slap down a credit card and reserve a Nikon D800 for pre-order, all shoppers can do now is sign up for a newsletter or add the camera to their wish list.

The following note on the page is the same as it was when D800 pre-orders were available:

Note on Availability: This item is in high demand and supplies from the manufacturer are limited. Its availability will fluctuate, and if the item is not currently in stock, we cannot guarantee that we will receive additional quantities in a timely manner. We will not charge your credit card until we ship the product.

Amazon arguably has the most advanced online store and inventory management systems in the online shopping world. There have been plenty of stories of other online retailers, including Best Buy, of overselling hot items and not delivering them on time.

Of course professional and enthusiast Nikon shooters will be able to purchase the D800 at some point, but they may not be able to get one on launch day or for months afterwards, depending on how demand for the camera shapes up. Nikon rarely releases new professional-grade cameras. It announced the Nikon D4 at CES 2012, but its been more than three years since the company introduced the Nikon D700, a camera that’s of similar stature and price to the D800. Some Nikon fans have waited for years for the D700 followup to be released since the older camera cannot shoot video and the full-frame Nikons that cost significantly more.

Since new phones, tablets and computers are released so often that’s it’s nearly impossible to keep up, buyers will sometimes switch allegiance to a new gadget if it takes a few days or weeks to get ahold of one of them. That’s not the case with cameras like the Nikon D800 and its predecessors. DSLR buyers that don’t get in on the initial pre-order wave can sometimes be forced to deal with waiting lists that can stretch on for weeks or months. Brick and mortar camera shops are sometimes relegated to a handful of the latest models until demand tapers down.

Amazon.com isn’t the only place to pre-order a Nikon D800, but many camera geeks (myself included) pre-order from Amazon since they seem to receive a large number of early units from Nikon and other major camera manufacturers. B&H Photo and Adorama are still taking pre-orders, but I’m not sure if they’re simply adding to a wait list or selling their initial allocations of D800s.

The Nikon D800 is capable of shooting cinema-quality movies and taking stunning photos. You can view Nikon’s official D800 video sample above and learn more about the D800 video sample here. Of course most D800 buyers will be buying the camera for its photo prowess.

Nikon’s posted several amazing sample photos shot with its recently announced D800 camera. The new D800 is Nikon’s latest full-frame DSLR camera. At $3,000 (body only), the Nikon D800 is designed for serious enthusiasts and professionals who don’t want to go all out and spend $6,000 on the Nikon D4.

While I love the convenience of shooting snapshots with my iPhone 4S and compact cameras, Nikon DSLRs are my weapons of choice when I want the best results. I’ve already pre-ordered the D800 from Amazon.com and suggest those who want their own D800 do the same as soon as possible if you want it anytime close to its mid-March release date. The Nikon D800 is a logical upgrade from the D700, which was released over three years ago. D800 units will likely be scarce for months after the camera’s release.

The sample images are straight out of the Nikon D800 and converted from RAW format to JPG using Nikon’s Capture NX 2 software. If you view the images at full resolution you’ll get a true sense of what it means to shoot with the Nikon D800′s 36.4 Megapixel sensor. There are some flaws in the D800 sample photos since there’s no retouching or other enhancements, such as sharpening. That’s a good thing in my book, since just about every professional published image we see these days is digitally enhanced to some degree. If these sample images are a starting point, I can’t wait to see what professionals come up with once they start shooting with the Nikon D800 in the field and (tastefully) enhancing their images.

The sample images show off the Nikon D800′s capabilities in a variety studio and landscape situations. Unfortunately, Nikon hasn’t provided any D800 samples of action shots or low-light portraits. Some have already criticized the Nikon D800 relatively narrow ISO range and its sensor’s high pixel density as barriers to shooting in low light. Nikon’s also come under fire for the D800′s burst mode, which only shoots up to 4 frames per second. That’s less than the much more affordable D7000 (6 fps) or the D4 (10 fps). Most photographers don’t need or use burst mode on a regular basis, but a slow burst mode is a deal breaker for some sports and wildlife photographers. Nikon should add more variety to its D800 sample images library to round things out a bit.

Before you rush out and try to replicate the quality of the Nikon D800 sample images below, keep in mind serious professionals shot them with the latest and greatest lenses and photo accessories. You would have to spend about $6,000 to acquire the three lenses used to shoot the D800 samples. Also keep in mind that the photographers worked with professional models and crowd-free locations.

(Read- Nikon D800: Amazing Sample Video)

Nikon D800, ISO 640, f4.5, 1/200 sec., AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II (Click for High Res D800 Sample)

In this Nikon D800 sample image we can get a sense of what the D800 is capable of in a portrait session or wedding, assuming the photographer’s dragged a few lights along. Shot at 160mm with a telephoto zoom lens, we can see extraordinary detail. With 36.4 MP, there’s more detail in this photo than you’d need for just about any workflow. Images of this resolution were once solely the realm of medium format cameras.

100% Crop of Nikon D800 Sample Image

Here’s a 100% crop of this Nikon D800 sample. Here you can see details such as the model’s eyelashes and fine wrinkles. If you look closely you can see some irritated pores where the makeup artist presumably plucked the model’s eyebrows. You can also see a lot of details in the reflection of her eye, including what looks like a soft box. Some of these “imperfections” would be edited out if this photo were to make its way to a magazine.

Nikon D800, ISO 100, f8, 1/200 sec., AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED (Click for High Res D800 Sample)

In this D800 sample image the photographer pairs a model with a cat. Hair and fur are great for testing cameras out. This is as close to a wildlife D800 sample as Nikon’s providing at this time.

100% Crop from Nikon D800 Sample Image

Here we can see distinct the hairs are when the D800 is in focus if you look at the top-left of this crop.

Nikon D800, ISO 100, f/8, 1 sec., AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED (Click for High Res. D800 Sample)

This is a sample shot in relatively low light inside a library. Shot at 15mm with a NIKKOR wide-angle zoom, there’s incredible detail here considering the space captured in this single frame.

100% Crop of Nikon D800 Sample Image

Here’s a 100% crop of the librarian’s counter in the sample image. It’s distorted since it’s off to the side of the wide-angle shot, but you can still read the signage and clearly make out the items on and around the countertop.

Nikon D800, ISO 100, f10, 1/200 sec., AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II (Click for high-res D800 sample)

Shooting jewelry and other reflective surfaces present their own challenges. Nikon is offering the D800E, a version of the camera without an anti-aliasing filter to make fine details as crisp as possible, but the Nikon D800 appears up to the task.

100% Crop of Jewelry- Shot with Nikon D800

Each and every gem is crisp and clear. While the Nikon D800E may do even better, most photographers will prefer having the anti-aliasing filter in place to prevent undesirable patterns from appearing in shots with fine patterns.

Nikon D800, ISO 320, f10, 1/400 sec., AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED (Click for high-res D800 sample)

The Nikon D800 is the way to go if you’re primarily shooting people and things close up. If you’re a landscape photographer you may be better suited with the Nikon D800E. The above image was shot with the Nikon D800.

100% Crop of Nikon D800 Sample Landscape Photo

It’s clean enough for most uses, but you can see that some of the edges around the flower petals and stems are soft.

Nikon D800E Sample Photo

While Nikon doesn’t provide direct Nikon D800 and D800E comparison shots, you can see how the D800E is sharp as a tack right out of the box in this D800E sample photo.

100% Crop of Nikon D800 Sample Photo

Each little branch in this photo is crisp and you can clearly make out the branches of the snow-covered trees in the background. It’s results like these that will drive some Nikon shooters to opt for the D800E, which comes with a $300 premium.

Nikon D800, ISO 100, f8 1/15 sec., AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II (Click for high-res D800 sample)

Again, despite the D800E’s incredibly sharpness, the D800 is no slouch. For most purposes the D800 is plenty sharp.

100% Crop of Nikon D800 Sample Image

Here’s a better example of the D800 performing in the outdoors. Unless you’re going to crop incredibly tightly or make poster-sized prints you probably won’t be able to eyeball the difference between the D800 and D800E.

Nikon D800, ISO 100, f8 1/2 sec., AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED (Click for high-res D800 sample)

Here’s another Nikon-produced D800 sample image shot in an empty library. This is the closest thing we have to a nighttime sample from Nikon at the moment. Note the dynamic range, going from the dark corners and background to the skylights.

All of the above photos were shot by accomplished professionals. Here’s a video from Nikon that shows how the sample D800 portraits were produced.

It’s no secret that many of Nikon’s latest DSLRs can take amazing photos, but the company’s lagged the competition in the video department for years. Nikon put a lot of effort into providing a stunning D800 sample movie. I wish they stopped and took the time to share some still from the sets of this movie.

Nikon released an amazing short movie to demonstrate the D800′s video chops. Most Nikon D800 buyers will be ponying up $3,000 primarily for its photo capabilities, but more and more photographers are creating videos for themselves and clients. As you can see in the sample movie, the Nikon D800 doesn’t disappoint and is fully capable of shooting cinema-quality movies.

Photographer Sandro Miller teamed up with Nikon and a full production crew to produce “Joy Ride,” a five-minute film that follows a mysterious motorcyclist through a seedy nighttime cityscape. Dozens of shots of vehicles, people and landscapes are woven together, most of which were taken in low-light conditions. If you were worried about shooting with the Nikon D800 once the sun goes down…don’t. With the proper lenses and techniques, the D800 appears to be more than capable of handling almost any lighting situation.

One early criticism is that the D800′s sensor and relatively narrow ISO range (compared to the D4) would limit night shooting. This video shows that the Nikon D800 will serve you just fine unless you’re shooting in near complete darkness. The Nikon D800 has an ISO range of 100-6400, which is expandable to 25,600. Of course some photographers will lust after the Nikon D4, but that camera is double the price and overkill for most enthusiasts and some professionals.

Nikon D800 / D800E

Nikon’s new D800 is making quite a splash in the camera and tech communities with good reason. The Nikon D800 is similar in size and price to the D700, a camera that’s over three years old. Until now, Nikon users that wanted to shoot video either had to upgrade to one of Nikon’s top-of -the-line D3 or D4 series cameras or pick up consumer-grade Nikon with a DX sensor, such as the D5100 or D7000. The Nikon D800 slides in between the consumer Nikons and the D4, offering a full FX sensor and many of the pro features found on the D4. It’s loaded with a 36.4 megapixel sensor for snapping pictures and 1080p video.

While this Nikon D800 sample video is certainly inspirational, don’t expect to get similar results unless you have the budget to go out and hire professional actors and production crew. You don’t have to go any further than the above video or the credits to get a sense of what it takes to make a film that’s as high quality as this, not to mention the range of lenses to capture the varied shots. If you’re starting fresh with DSLRs you’ll need to budget a few thousand dollars to properly outfit the Nikon D800 with lenses, strobes and other accessories. If you want to replicate all the gear used in the D800 sample video, you’re going to need to crack open a very large piggy bank.

The Nikon D800 is available for pre-order at Amazon.com for $2,999, with early orders scheduled to ship mid-March. Nikon is also offering up the Nikon D800E for $3,299. The Nikon D800E is virtually identical to the D800, except that it doesn’t employ an anti-aliasing filter, which means fine details will be sharper. Most users will be better suited with the Nikon D800 since the lack of a anti-aliasing filter means photographers will have to deal with undesirable moire´ effects in post production.

The Nikon D800 might sound expensive compared to point-and-shoot cameras or simply shooting with an iPhone, but this is a camera that’s worth every penny, especially for those that get paid to shoot. Those who are just getting started with DSLRs or are not sure if they need everything the Nikon D800 has to offer would likely be better-suited by starting off with a more affordable option, such as the Nikon D5100 and upgrading to the D800 once they outgrow it.

The long anticipated Motorola Droid 4 finally has a release date. Verizon will start selling the Droid 4 on Friday February 10th for $199.

The Motorola Droid 4 is the fourth version of the original Droid that kicked off the Android craze on Verizon. In the past few years Motorola has greatly improved the keyboard on the Droid, so much so that we called the lasercut keyboard on the Droid 4 is “one of the best physical keyboards to date.”

We named the Droid 4 the Best Smartphone of CES 2012 thanks to a number of features, including the keyboard.

The Droid 4 has 4G LTE connectivity, a first for the Motorola Droid series of phones, as well as a physical keyboard. This keyboard offers a much nicer feel and layout than the Samsung Stratosphere, so if you want a fast 4G LTE smartphone, this is your pick.

Droid 4 Hands On Video

We recommend making sure your next smartphone has 4G LTE connectivity because it delivers speeds of 10 times faster than 3G, with download speeds of 5-12Mbps and upload speeds of 2-5Mbps.

The Motorola Droid 4 has a 1.2Ghz dual core processor and 1GB of RAM, similar to what powers the Droid RAZR MAXX we like so much. The Droid 4 has a 4 inch qHD display with a 960 x 540 resolution. There is an 8MP rear facing camera and a front facing camera for video chat.

Like the rest of Motorola’s phones, the Droid 4 ships with Android 2.3, but Motorola has promised to upgrade it to Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). The Droid 4 is also compatible with the Lapdock 500 ($299), which includes a 14 inch display and software to extend your productivity.

Additional features include FIPS encryption which gives you government grade security for email, calendar and contacts, Citrix Receiver, Smart Actions and a 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot supporting 8 devices.

–

Look for our Droid 4 Review coming early next week.

I have to admit, I used to get excited over having a device come out in white. It’s not the Apple thing that draws me, it’s the fact that Microsoft used to restrict Pocket PC devices to a grey color for so long that color options excite me. These days, it seems like every phone eventually dresses out in white, at least the major phones.

There has already been a handful of rumors that Nokia would offer some of the Lumia series smart phones in white. The Lumia 800 already comes in cyan, pink, and black so the natural next color, if any, would be white. Personally, the cyan Lumia 900 on Verizon is all I am waiting for, I don’t need white! The SE Xperia X10 is the last white phone I buy for the sake of just having a white phone!

Earlier today, WP Central posted a photo found on Nokia’s Facebook page that hinted towards a white offering of the Nokia Lumia 800. It was a VERY subtle hint. Just take a look at the photo below and let me know if you don’t get it!

Well, a couple of hours later, more info about the white version surfaced on Nokia Conversations.

The Nokia Lumia 800, dubbed the first real Windows Phone, has been turning heads ever since it was launched back in October, thanks to its stunning curved design in cyan, magenta and black. But news of the phone’s launch in white today is the icing on the cake. In white, the smoothly-crafted polycarbonate unibody case perfectly offsets the uniquely curved ClearBlack touch screen.

The white Nokia Lumia 800 is due to be rolled out first in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Scandinavia, Finland, Poland and Switzerland, with other countries to follow.

It’s definitely sexy, but like I said, cyan is calling me.

Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s head of design, sat down with the Guardian for an exclusive interview recently. During the interview, Ahtisaari discussed some of Nokia’s design plans down the road which includes several innovative ideas for the Nokia Lumia line which is powered by Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS. NFC, wireless charging, and software color themes to match accessories for the lineup were mentioned.

NFC (Near Field Communications) is a wireless standard very similar to Bluetooth that works by communicating with other hardware by touching them together or bringing them very close. The proximity required to initiate these communications are controlled by application’s sensitivity settings by the app’s developer. An example of NFC in use is available with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus with Google Wallet and Android Beam. Android Beam allows two users with NFC phones to share contact info by simply touching phones to each other and initiating the beam. You can see an example of this in a short video from Google. NFC is a very young technology right now, but the adoption of NFC seems to be picking up. Nokia and Google are already using it and Samsung is adding it to some of the Galaxy S II devices and the Galaxy Note.

NFC is not yet supported by Windows Phone but plan to support it later this year. The Nokia Lumia 800 and 900, two Lumia devices set to be released soon, will not have NFC. According to Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, NFC is important to Nokia and they plan to support it.

The company is also working closely with Microsoft, which is providing the software for its new top-end smartphones, to co-ordinate software details such as tile colours to match its hardware accessories, Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s head of design, told the Guardian.

New versions of the Lumia design, introduced to showcase Windows Phone in November, will also remove the flip-up plastic tab that presently covers the micro-USB charger for the phone – one of just two moving parts on the Lumia 800 phone.

I am really excited to see how Nokia does with the Lumia lineup in the US. Even though Microsoft has a bit of a bad reputation in the mobile game due to consumer’s perceived belief that Windows Mobile was a failure, Nokia’s great reputation in the feature phone market should help get Windows Phone into the hands of the consumer.

Nokia’s leaders seem very forward thinking and they know what consumer’s want. This is apparent with their push to have a line of accessories available for their phones at launch. This, in my opinion, is one of the things that Apple did well with the iPhone.

It’s been a few weeks and the dust from a very active CES for phone announcements is beginning to settle. AT&T and pretty much every major OEM announced phones. Motorola and Verizon announced a few rehashed devices, one of which launched on January 26th, 2012. Nokia and Samsung were fairly busy as well.

That leaves me to ask you all one important question. Which phone are you most excited about and how long are you willing to wait for it?

I am most excited about 2 phones, the Nokia Lumia 900 and the HTC Titan II. I am really looking forward to the Nokia Lumia 900 the most mainly because of the Cyan color, the unibody construction, and I am itching to use Windows Phone more often. The main issue is that I am on Verizon and won’t be able to purchase the Lumia 900 when it drops.

So which one?

Take Our Poll

I can’t get excited about an Android phone shipping with Gingerbread now that I have had my Ice Scream sandwich. This reminds me of a certain carrier launching a certain OEMs phone with Android 1.6 when 2.x was being shipped on other products.

I can’t get excited about the Samsung Galaxy Note either. Don’t get me wrong, I love a big screen, but the Galaxy Note’s screen is insanely large. I believe it should be classified into a new category. Micro Tablet or Mega Phone? The Note has sold well overseas and I expect that it will do fine in the US as well, but I’m not interested.

I can’t get excited about the revamped phones either. All the updated models add additional features or specs, but are they being updated too soon? Droid RAZR and HTC Titan owners are just getting settled into their new phones and there is already a new version. Should the owners of those devices be upset? I know I would be if I got locked into a 2 year contract 2-3 months ago and my phone had a new version drop already. How many versions of the Samsung Galaxy S II are there now? 4 in the last 6 months, maybe more?

So tell us why you are excited about the phone you have your eyes on!

We got a chance to see the Sprint Galaxy Nexus briefly at CES when Sprint announced that it was in fact making it way to them soon. Sprint’s version is supposed to become available during the first half of 2012, but they have not finalized the pricing or specific launch dates for the Galaxy Nexus yet. There are plenty of hearsay rumors out there.

Now there is a way for you to get on mailing list to be the 1st to know about the Sprint Galaxy Nexus availability. Google has a registration form online for the Sprint Galaxy Nexus. Just throw your email address and zip code in to the form on the landing page and you will get the goods straight from Google.

Register to receive more information about Galaxy Nexus, the first 4G LTE phone from Sprint. We may also send you other information about Nexus products, services, and features.

The Sprint version of the Galaxy Nexus aside from the Sprint logo, will have 32gb of storage but the rest of the details are up in the air. The rumor mill is putting a quicker processor and larger battery into it, but we’ll just have to wait and see. As Chuong indicated during CES 2012, Sprint was being very cautious when showing the phone.

Though Sprint had allowed us to see the Galaxy Nexus in person, the device was well-guarded and Now Network did not allow us to film or capture many images of the device as the hardware and software is still being finalized at this point.

The worst part of CES for me is the wait for the actual devices to launch. I can’t tell you how many devices I’ve seen in the Pocket PC and Smartphone world get announced at CES and never make it to market or make it really, really late. HP and Velocity Mobile come to mind!

Nothing stresses a network like a major event, and it doesn’t get much bigger than the Super Bowl. In order to prepare for the estimated 85,000 people who will descend on the Lucas Oil Stadium for Super Bowl 46 Verizon has pumped a significant part of 69 million dollars into ensuring a reliable and fast cell network.

This is the first 4G LTE Super Bowl, which means that Lucas Oil Stadium and downtown Indianapolis is packed to the rafters with the latest 4G LTE antennas and technology. In addition to the stadium, Verizon has upgraded the network in 30 downtown venues.

Verizon has packed Lucas Oil Stadium with 4G LTE for Super Bowl 46.

Verizon invited GottaBeMobile on a tour of the “most wired” stadium in the NFL, to see exactly what goes into delivering speeds fast enough to watch the Super Bowl on your phone, while you are at the game. From 3G to 4G LTE and even WiFi, Verizon has put together an impressive network.

Behind the Scenes of Super Bowl 46 with Verizon

What Does the Network Need to Handle?

The average Colts game draws 70,000 people, but the Super Bowl is expected to bring in 85,000. Much of this increase will be in the form of high demand users such as press and team staff.

Verizon has built this enhanced 4G LTE network to handle 2.5 times the traffic of a normal Colts game.

Verizon needs to handle the increased voice and data needs inside the stadium and throughout the downtown area, as well as at the Super Bowl practice field where Verizon has deployed a COW to handle the increased needs of teams and team staff.

Verizon Network Upgrades for Super Bowl 46

Verizon has deployed a mixture of solutions throughout the Lucas Oil Stadium to make sure that you can talk, text and surf on game day.

9 Antennas that are part of a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) outside the stadium to handle increased downtown traffic.

400 Antenna Internal DAS to handle 3G and 4G LTE voice and data inside the stadium.

600 Antenna WiFi system capable of handling 28,000 simultaneous connected users. Free for Super Bowl 46.

3 Cell on Wheels (COWs). Stand alone generator powered cell towers to handle the extremely high demand areas.

This COW adds network support for Super Bowl 46.

In order to understand the needs of a network during the Super Bowl, Verizon sent a team down to the Dallas Cowboy’s stadium during Super Bowl 45 to understand all the logistics involved in supporting this many users. Based on these findings, and the team’s experience with the Indy 500 and Kentucky Derby, Verizon put a plan in place, beginning work in February of 2011.

The Verizon engineers have set up the system so that as you walk up the steps to go into the Lucas il Stadium your phone will switch from the exterior DAS to the internal DAS.

By avoiding RF pollution and spillover you won’t have dead zone issues. During our tour, I was impressed with how well the network handled data while in the bowels of the stadium and as I walked out of the stadium.

While in the stadium, I was able to get an amazing 4G LTE data speed, which I was assured was real. Granted this is the result of an empty stadium and almost 69 million worth of network upgrades, but damn that’s fast.

4G LTE is Super Fast Under the Right Conditions

What Will Verizon Do On Game Day?

During the Super Bowl, Verizon will have five Test Men and Test Women walking the stadium with a small backpack testing device. Teh size of a larger camera bag, this setup can measure the network performance during the game.

These Verizon Testers can relay information to the on site personnel and to the Verizon Super Bowl Command Center, where experts can adjust network power to compensate for increased needs and game day surprises.

What Happens After the Super Bowl?

One set of 4G LTE antennas.

The best part about this upgrade is that almost everything will be left behind. When the game is over, Verizon will drive the COWs off to handle network needs in other locations, but the network upgrades to the downtown area will be left in place.

This includes the internal and external Distributed Antenna Systems, in-stadium WiFi and the improvements to downtown venus.

–

Thanks to Verizon Wireless for the behind the scene’s look at the Lucas Oil Stadium.

Verizon and Motorola announced the Droid RAZR MAXX at CES last week with no release date or pricing. Not getting that data was no surprise and sometimes phones announced at CES don’t get released for quite some time. I don’t know if anyone remembers the original, Windows Mobile powered Xperia. It wasn’t released until it was too late really. The same for the some of the HP iPaq smart phones over the years. Well, the Droid RAZR MAXX received that data far earlier than expected due to a snafu on the Motorola landing page for the phone.

The landing page has been updated to show “Available Soon” instead of “Available 1/26″ as it was spotted by Droid Life previously.

According to Droid Life, the contract price for the Droid RAZR MAXX will be $299. I am not 100% sure where that data came from, but it seems about right.

Adam Mills got some hands-on time with the phone and had this to say:

What’s impressive is that the Droid MAXX is able to house a battery that large but also keep an extremely slim form factor. The original Droid RAZR is 7.1mm at its thinnest point while the Droid MAXX makes the jump up to 8.9mm.

We held both in our hands and to be perfectly honest, it’s not that big of a deal, especially when you take in the fact that this is a 4G LTE smartphone which often don’t have the best battery life.

For now, we think it’s a worthy trade-off.

I got some time with the RAZR MAXX as well and I have to agree. The thickness of the MAXX isn’t that big of a deal when you consider how much juice you are getting with it. Other than the size, there didn’t seem to be any real difference between the original and the MAXX.

Make sure to check out Adam’s hands-on video!

Microsoft: Skype for Windows Phone is coming soon

Yesterday, Hillel Fuld wrote an interesting article on Business Insider titled, “Here’s Why Robert Scoble And The Rest Of The Pundits Are Wrong: Windows Phone Will Be A Success“. This article stems from all the negative vibes that Scoble has been putting out about Windows Phone. Hillel goes over the reasons he thinks Scoble and others are dead wrong about Windows Phone. Personally, I agree with both sides equally on the points, especially app support. My drawback on Windows Phone is app support. I do realize that Windows Phone is beyond where Android and iOS were at the same point in their history, but there are many niche apps that are left to be developed for Windows Phone. Unlike Scoble, I have hope. I don’t expect Microsoft to grab 10% market share in 2012, but I do expect Windows Phone to grow enough to consider it a successful start. The 1st year of Windows Phone did not seem like a success in my eyes, but I do think 2012 will be, especially with Nokia’s help.

Robert Scoble replied to Hillel’s article predicting that Windows Phone will be a success on Google Plus with a piece title, “What +Hillel Fuld doesn’t know about Windows Phone and its chances in the market“. In this article, Scoble talks about what journalists and CEOs have told him in meetings and dinners in regards to Windows Phone. He mentions Pandora not planning a Windows Phone app and that the Skype CEO telling him that they won’t be supporting the current version of Windows Phone.

“First, I had dinner with Skype’s CEO on Thursday night. He told me that Skype won’t support the current version of Windows Phone.”

Now there are reports coming out that Skype will be coming to the current release of Windows Phone from The Verge’s Tom Warren.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone Skype app appears to be nearing release. Skype’s VP of products, Rick Osterloh, revealed that Microsoft’s Skype division is “working on a Windows Phone product that will be coming out soon,” during an interview at CES 2012. Microsoft has typically refused to comment in detail on its Skype plans, after the company acquired the voice and video calling service in October.

I read the Scoble piece yesterday and woke up this morning to a link to the article on The Verge in my inbox this morning. When I finally got around announcing the good news about Skype here on GBM, I noticed that Scoble updated his Google Plus posting with the following:

UPDATE: Skype’s CEO, Tony Bates, just called me and clarified what he told me. I misquoted him or didn’t understand what he was saying, he told me. He said Skype will do an app on Mango but will further integrate into future Windows Phone OS’s. This made me update my post here.

This video with Skype’s VP of Products Rick Osterloh shares info that Skype is coming with a product for Windows Phone that will be coming out soon.

I really like Scoble and I value most of his opinions and information, but his reply to Hillel’s article seems almost as if he just wants Microsoft and Windows Phone to go away. That’s a far departure from the Robert Scoble I knew back in the day. People and opinions change, that’s life.

Either way, this is great news for Microsoft and Windows Phone users! Having an official Skype client for Windows Phone narrows the list of missing apps from the Marketplace. As for Pandora, I actually love and still use Pandora, so I still want to see it come to Windows Phone.

I am excited for the potential success of Microsoft’s newest offering, Windows Phone as well. I don’t currently use a Windows Phone device as a daily driver, but I am ready to as soon as Nokia brings a Windows Phone to Verizon. Most of the reasons I choose Android over Windows Phone right now are dwindling as the platform gains market share. Sure, Microsoft is way behind Google and Apple in the mobile game right now, but that’s going to change in my opinion. We might not ever see Windows Phone surpass iOS or Android, but I can see Windows Phone making up ground if they continue what they are doing.

Let me get my position on Nokia and Windows Phone in the open right away, including my own personal biases. I’m a former Pocket PC/Windows Mobile fanboy who is now platform agnostic.

Don Reisinger from eWeek has quite the interesting article up regarding Nokia and Windows Phone that I couldn’t help replying to. When I first read his article that was written on January 11, 2012, it did just what I think it was written for, I grabbed my keyboard ready to comment. While I was rereading and preparing to write this rebuttal, I was informed that he wrote a contradictory article two months ago. The article two months ago was titled, “Nokia’s Windows Phones Threaten Android, iOS: 10 Reasons Why“. The article written on the 11th was titled, “Nokia’s Windows Phone Strategy Will Fail: 10 Reasons Why“. Was the most recent story written as link bait? Why the sudden change of opinion?

Let me comment on each of the 10 reasons why Don thinks Nokia’s Windows Phone Strategy will fail.

1. The product designs are subpar

Really? His article from 2 months ago says quite the opposite.

One thing about Nokia is that it knows how to create nice-looking smartphones that people actually want. The Lumia 800 is especially appealing.

When you look at the Lumia line of Windows Phone 7-based devices, it’s hard to find too many redeeming qualities in their designs.

Two comments, same author, two months apart. What?

The Nokia Lumia line has plenty of design appeal. From the fresh colors to the one-piece polycarbonate body, the Lumia lineup delivers. As someone who has handled all three of the Lumia models now, I am sold. They all are very solid, have beautifully bright screens, and feel so balanced in my hands.

2. Nokia’s brand loyalty is waning

Meanwhile, Nokia has done little (if anything) to repair its ailing brand. At what point will the company wake up and realize it needs to regain lost customers?

I can’t really speak to this without seeing numbers. What I do see is that many Nokia faithful that supported and loved Nokia throughout the Symbian days are warming up and even liking Windows Phone. These observations are mostly from bloggers and writers I know and/or follow on Twitter. The author mentions that countless customers are leaving Nokia for other products with better features, performance and applications. I agree, when the main phones from Nokia in the US market are feature phones, that’s understandable. Nokia really hasn’t had a smart phone presence in the US until now and as customers migrate from feature phones to smart phones, they have to go towards iPhones or Android powered phones. Now that Nokia is entering the US Smart Phone world now, I believe brand recognition and loyalty might favor Nokia. It wasn’t too long ago that regular, no geek, cell customers considered Nokia’s feature phones one of the better manufacturers.

3. Microsoft has lost mobile customer trust

But now, with better options available elsewhere, it has fallen far behind. And like Nokia, it has done little to fix it.

This is true, but you have to keep in mind that Microsoft’s new customer focus are not the same customer type overall that they’ve lost trust with. The crowd that Microsoft lost are the geeks like me. The folks that like an open OS that they can tweak. Those customers are mainly Android fans for the most part now. Microsoft won’t get many of those customers back. The customers that Microsoft appears to target now are those that have iPhones or have never had a Smart Phone before. This is a general observation and I have no facts to base this on, but it’s quite obvious. I am close to becoming a Windows Phone user again myself, but I can say that I have many friends and colleagues that aren’t as eager to get back to Windows Phone.

4. Windows Phone 7 can’t attract enterprise customers

I have no real complaints with this statement. Microsoft does seem to have abandoned enterprise by choosing to follow a bunch of Apple’s plans. Although Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Exchange are just part of it all, there are other aspects important to enterprise customers that Microsoft has left out.

5. Consumers would rather go with Android

The numbers support this argument, but it’s presented with a very broad brush. Yes, Android is doing quite well, but it’s not as user-friendly as Windows Phone. Motorola and Verizon did some great marketing to make Android a cool alternative to AT&T’s iPhone a few years back. Nokia and Microsoft are doing the same now with its marketing efforts. Will it be as successful as Verizon’s “Droid” marketing? Only time will tell. Right now, an average consumer (not a geek or power user) might prefer Android or “Droids” because that’s what they know, but Microsoft and Nokia just got started here. Give it time before we say that consumers would rather go to Android over Windows Phone.

6. The price is cheap (but that’s not a good thing)

At first glance, that might seem like an offer too good to refuse. But further inspection reveals that the phones don’t have the features and performance to seriously challenge models priced around the $200 mark, like Apple’s iPhone.

When is cheap not a good thing? When you are talking about build quality. That’s not the case with the Lumia line. If you’ve ever picked up a Nokia Smart Phone from the Lumia line or from later offerings before the Windows Phone move, you’d know that the build quality is consistent and solid. Even the light weight Nokia N95 was solid even though it was made with a lot of plastics. Cheap price for Nokia quality will never be a bad thing. The $50 Lumia 710 is much more solid in terms of build quality than most $50 Android devices I’ve encountered.

7. The marketing is off

When viewing television, listening to the radio, or reading online or print publications, try to find a single, high-quality ad from Nokia or Microsoft promoting the Lumia line of devices.

Huh? The marketing just started. Do I need to remind everyone that the Nokia Lumia 710 just became available in the US on T-Mobile this week? Do I need to remind everyone that the Nokia Lumia 900 was just announced this week at CES? Microsoft has been marketing Windows Phone Mango with a huge budget this past fall with a ton of parties and events.

Just this week, I commented on how much marketing Nokia is throwing out there for the Lumia lineup at CES. They have ads everywhere, they are giving coffee and donuts to CES attendees at Monorail stops, they have dancers at Monrails, and they gave free shuttle rides from McCarran International Airport to hotels this week at CES. I think that’s great marketing for Nokia and Windows Phone. Kudos Nokia!

8. The first device should have been the winner

The issue with that is the device is one of the lower-end handsets the company sells. Nokia plans to offer the high-end Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 eventually, but by then, consumers might be left with a bad taste in their mouths.

A high quality, well-built Smart Phone that could easily sell for $100-$150 with contract priced at $50 sounds like a better entry into the US Smart Phone market that a $200-$299 entry in my opinion. I am not much of an economist, but selling something of great quality for a low price seems like a win/win to me.

9. There’s no fanfare

Unfortunately for Nokia, it has no hype to rely on, which can only mean one thing: failure.

In all fairness, this article was written a couple of days before Nokia pulled in all the “Best of CES” awards.

Perhaps he didn’t see the line to get into Nokia’s Press Conference on Tuesday at CES. Maybe he didn’t see how many journalists didn’t even get inside to see the Lumia 900 announcement with Stephen Elop, Steve Ballmer, and Ralph de la Vega or maybe he was one left in that long hallway. There was plenty of fanfare at that CES.

10. There’s a general lack of market understanding

Wouldn’t it make sense to wait a week, so it can get more headlines? Nokia’s management seems to misunderstand the technology industry. By doing so, it’s hurting its chances of succeeding.

When all eyes are on CES, why would you wait a week later when all those eyes are sleeping off their CES trips? Why put off announcing such an awesome device? The fact that Nokia received so much attention and stole the show at CES shows they did a great job and understand marketing quite well.

Summary

The Microsoft and Nokia partnership seemed as weird as Microsoft and Palm with the Treo a few years ago, but it worked out for Palm and I feel as if it will work out for Nokia. When I first learned of this marriage, I was very skeptical, but I am sold now. With Nokia’s solid rep and Microsoft’s promising mobile OS, there should be success moving forward. Right now, Nokia has very little smart phone presence in the US and Windows Phone is well behind Android and iOS, meaning that any progress is good. Give this a year and let’s talk then.

If this article is exactly what the author wanted to get as a result, good job Don! It worked.

Staples loves Tablets. Or at least Staples loves customers who might be interested in Tablets and wants to sell some more. So Staple is pushing out a new infographic with some survey data about Tablet users essentially saying people love their tablets.

There’s some interesting, but not surprising data contained in the survey results. Of course Stall Surfers (closet or otherwise) will see that 35% of respondents use their Tablets in the bathroom. I’m guessing that’s a small number as some folks just don’t want to report their Stall Surfing habits. But also note that the survey is suggesting Tablet use of 90 minutes a day on average and that 80% of the respondents are saying that Tablets help them balance their lifestyle, and over 88% use their Tablets on the road.

Interesting stuff.

I visited with several headphone manufacturers and retailers and found three offerings to be quite interesting. I am sure I missed quite a few awesome companies, but of those that I met with, these are the ones I was most impressed with.

In no particular order- Soul by Ludacris, Marley, and Yurbuds.

I love music and while I don’t consider myself an Audiophile, I do enjoy good full range sound. I tend to lean towards solutions that provide a little more bass, sometimes even exaggerated bass is OK too.

Soul by Ludacris

Soul is a newer company that seems to be following in the “Beats by Dre” footsteps where a company partnered up with an artist to create a line of audio products. In this case, it’s Ludacris.

SOUL by Ludacris presents a full suite of elite quality, stylish options aimed to please artists, producers, DJs, jetsetters and music snobs alike.

They have been around about a year and held a short press conference yesterday announcing new styles and designs. Currently they offer 8 different headsets from $299 to $69. The sound quality is quite impressive, I through some dance music with some hard hitting bass in their $200+ headphones and was blown away.

For more information, visit Soul by Ludacris.

Marley

This company has a mission above just selling headphones. The pr rep that showed me their product line yesterday kept reminding me about this mission. The mission is superior quality, earth-friendly, and cause minded. Obviously superior quality is important to audio buffs, but the other parts of the mission are commendable. Marley use natural, earth-friendly and renewable materials when making their products and packaging. They use FSC-certified woods, organic cotton and recyclable aluminum. To me, these materials make for a very unique looking product line. The last part of the mission is charity. I didn’t ask, but I assume a portion of the proceeds support charity.

The products are all unique looking with wood finishes and rasta-like coloring. There are so many lines to choose from, some quite expensive and many are very affordable.

I was able to test a few models with my own music and was general pleased with the performance. The $199.99 Redemption Song over ear headphones had the best overall sound of the models I tested.

The over all feel of the products was solid, but I wonder about durability of some of the headphone’s materials.

For more information, visit The House of Marley.

yurbuds

One of the biggest issue I have with in-ear headphones is that when I am exercising or working in the yard and get a sweat going, they start working their way out of my ears. You lose that air seal and start losing sound quality. I find myself spending more time pushing them back in that listening. At Digital Focus and Showstoppers, yurbuds was set up demonstrating what they consider the strength of their product line, in-ear headphones that WON’T come out until you want them to.

I was skeptical of that claim as well as the audio quality. The prices of the yurbuds are lower than you’d expect, so naturally you would expect the audio quality to lack. They aren’t Ultimate Ears, but they sound great for the price. Very good value for a workout pair of headphones.

Hmmm? Convertible Tablets? Where have we heard that before. I have to admit, hybrid Tablets have always intrigued me since the bygone days of the HP tc1000 series. And let’s face it, if you use a Bluetooth keyboard with a Tablet aren’t you just admitting the obvious, that you like some sort of hybrid form factor as well? Or is what K.T. Bradford has uncovered here a convertible Ultrabook? Well, she tells us that is is a Convertible Tablet Ultrabook, so I guess all the bases are covered.

What K.T shows off in this video is a reference design manufactured by Compal and being trumpeted by Intel. For those that don’t know, a reference design is something that some company hopes and OEM will pick up and bring to market some day.

This hybrid uses the Ultrabook sleek and slim design and specs for the keyboard part of the form factor and the detachable slate is well, it’s a slate Tablet that contains the guts of the device. This particular reference design the Compal QAU20 is running Windows 8 on a Core i5 processor, so in the scope of how Microsoft is pushing its next OS, this kind of hybrid form factor does indeed make a lot of sense.

Keep in mind we’re seeing other convertible or hybrid form factors at CES 2012. For instance the Lenovo Yoga.

But maybe I’m just yearning for the good old days.

There’s no doubt about it. Intel is arming up to wage some battles with ARM over market share in mobile devices. We’ve been seeing ARM this and ARM that for some time, but Intel is ready to fight back a bit, at least with some of the reference designs and concepts it is showing off at CES 2012.

GBMer K.T. Bradford got a chance to go hands on with the Intel Medfield Tablet, this one being the IdeaTab K2110 made by Lenovo. According to the rep she’s speaking with they’ve been working with Google for over a year, and also focusing on graphics optimization. Given the quick look we see in the video things do look pretty snappy, but keep in mind we’re far from a release date at this point. Not saying this is the case here, but what we see in the Vegas desert in January can often be a mirage later in the year. That might be important context as I’m reading elsewhere that the rep says that this is Beta hardware.

According to the rep, the Medfield processor, which is based essentially on Intel’s Atom, and is something that Intel is sharing with its phone reference design. I’m curious because Atom, which was much ballyhooed when it first hit the market doesn’t have such a stellar reputation these days, especially in the mobile market Intel is looking to compete in here. But we’ll see how this all shakes out down the line.

The new Ford Fusion Energi is the official car of CES and includes goodies we would expect such as Ford Sync and MyFord Touch, which will connect you to apps and services in your car without the need to constantly fumble with your phone or take your eyes of the road.

Mulally shared that you will be able to use your smartphones and tablet to connect and interact with your 2013 Ford Energi. We are looking forward to checking out what the company has in store for the connected driver when the 2013 Ford Fusion Energi hits the streets.

The 2013 Ford Fusion Energie includes many of the additional features that you come to expect in a new connected Ford like;

Lane Keeping System: This class-exclusive technology consists of three elements to help a driver maintain proper lane position. Using a small, forward-facing camera behind the inside rearview mirror, the system “looks” down the road, monitoring lane lines to determine that the car is on course. The system will alert a driver if drowsiness or erratic lane-keeping is detected. The second element warns a driver with a steering wheel vibration if the Fusion drifts too close to lane markings. Finally, lane keeping aid will actually apply pressure on the steering to help bring the car back into proper lane position

Adaptive cruise control: Using forward-looking radar, this system “looks” down the road when activated, slowing the Fusion when slower traffic is detected ahead. Adaptive cruise control enables collision warning with brake support to help slow the car if the potential of a crash is detected

Active park assist: Employing sensors, this technology can identify a suitable parallel parking space, calculate the trajectory and steer the car to properly position it within the spot. All a driver need do is operate accelerator and brake pedals

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with cross-traffic alert: Sensors in both Fusion rear quarter-panels are able to detect traffic in a driver’s blind spot, providing both audible and visual warnings if traffic – unseen by the driver – is detected. BLIS technology enables cross-traffic alert, warning the driver of oncoming traffic when backing out of a parking space with obstructed views, such as between two large vans

What do you think about the new Ford Fusion Energi and connected cars? Are you ready for an electric car with apps that help you manage the experience?
