Report Says PC Makers Will Offer Free Vista to Win 7 Upgrades Starting July 1
Mary Jo Foley is linking to information on the Tech ARP site that purports to lay out an upgrade policy for users who purchase Windows machines after July 1. According to the report a customer purchasing a Windows machine after July 1, 2009 through a date to be determined later) will be eligible for a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it is released.
Vista Home Premium customers can upgrade to Win 7 Home Premium, Vista Business to Win 7 Professional, and of course all of those Vista Ultimate customers can jump to Win 7 Ultimate.
Mary Jo’s post includes an update with a statement from Microsoft, but it is typical PR speak that neither confirms or denies anything, so we’ll see where this goes.
Is Apple Blocking Google’s Chrome Browser on Me.com?
Last month I made the change from an Exchange hosted service to Apple’s MobileMe / Me.com . So far, I’ve been pretty impressed with the services, the cost, and the reliability of the sync process. Apple has clearly made some headway since the disastrous launch last year.
However, all is not good in Google Chrome and Me.com land.
Why are Movie Apps Moving to the Cloud?
First Microsoft decided to move Windows Movie Maker to its Live suite of apps. If you haven’t tried out the cloud version, save yourself the trouble. It is a painful experience, and one I’m not looking forward to when the desktop client is dropped in Windows 7. (To be fair, I think it is still in beta.)
Now comes word that Apple wants to transition iMovie to an on-line app as well. Why?
Ed Bott: XP Users Will Face Some Challenges With Windows 7
Ed Bott, our good friend over at Zdnet.com, has a great article on comparing feature changes between Windows XP and the upcoming Windows 7. He says, and I agree with Ed, that Windows XP users will initially struggle with Windows 7 new UI features, but should give it some time to appreciate the productivity gains:
The real problem most XP users will have when migrating to the Windows 7 interface is that they need to unlearn those old navigation models. The longer you’ve been using PCs, the more likely you are to reflexively assume that the solution is to pull down a menu or double-click an icon. Those techniques worked fine back in the 1990s, but today, with instant search available just about everywhere in the Windows UI, those old techniques are as dated as a pair of Dockers.
Evernote Has Big Plans for 2009, Where’s The Ink Love?
I just got an email from Phil Libin, Evernote’s CEO, detailing their plans for 2009.
It is an interesting list, and good to see them overhauling their UI across all platforms. What would you like to see Evernote concentrate on? Personally, I’d like to see a better ink experience in their Windows version, and, ink notes visible on the Mac client. It is about time we see this all too familiar icon replaced with an actual ink note…Unfortunately, I don’t see that on their list….
Here is Evernote’s plan for 2009: Continue reading
Dragon Medical 10 update, take a look!
Okay, I get that many of you may not be overly excited by reading about speech recognition. But, there are some of us who think speech recognition is just fascinating. I still derive great pleasure from talking to my computer. I am constantly amazed by the ability for a computer to understand my spoken language and translate that into the written word. Working On That New Year’s To-Do List? Here are Some Tips
The new year is all about getting your act together and staying on top of those emails, to-do lists, and more. Here are a few software products to help you along the way:
- MindJet’s MindManager - a very popular application for brainstorming, managing projects, managing to-do lists, and integrating with Outlook. They also make a Mac version
- Outlook 2007 - The To Do list in the side bar is a great way of staying on top of emails that you’ve flagged or tasks you’ve created. To ways to keep tabs on an email: drag it to your Task List button to create a task from the email; or, flag it for follow up so it shows up in the To Do list
- Create a to-do template in OneNote 2007
- Franklin Covey’s PlanPlus for Outlook
- Create an on-the-fly To Do list in Windows Journal
What other tips or software would you recommend?

Crayon Physics Deluxe Beta is here
Looks like the long-awaited Crayon Physics Deluxe is about to hit…
Huge thanks to everyone who has pre-ordered the Crayon Physics Deluxe. As an early Christmas present I’ve started emailing beta invitations of the game to all the pre-orderers. It’s going to take a little while to send out all the emails, so DON’T PANIC if haven’t gotten your email invitation yet. You should be able to get the beta before Christmas eve, unless the server explodes or something equally frighting happens.

Should Enterprises Be Wary of Cloud Computing?
Ovum, a tech analyst consulting firm, is recommending that enterprises take a cautious approach to Cloud Computing, citing outages from Amazon and Google, as well as management challenges, as examples.
“Enterprises are right to be cautious about relying on such consumer/SME-oriented suppliers for anything resembling a mission critical application or service,” said research firm Ovum in a report.
“A spate of service outages on the Amazon and Google platforms has increased enterprise caution about the reliability of consumer-market-oriented cloud providers.”
Personally, I see Cloud Computing taking a few hits on the chin next year as firms take a wait-and-see on what Web 2.0 firms will make it. Trusting data to a company that might not see the end of 1st quarter 2009, is enough reason to hold on to that precious data and keeping it local.
2009 Predictions: Rob’s Take
I love the beginning of a new year due to having a clean slate - anything is possible and the plains are wide-open.
Here is my best guess for what 2009 holds for us mobile tech enthusiasts: Continue reading
