Ok, maybe I’m being a bit overly optimistic here, but with all the focus on real time search these days, I was hoping that Bing would bring some of that to the table. Hoping that Microsoft was a step ahead of the game, I did a search for the Bing video that I uploaded to [...]
I received an exclusive invitation to preview Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing. Here is a quick GBM Shortcut video demoing a little bit of Bing and doing some searches on text, video, and images. I’ve only been using it for about an hour, so I’m sure there is much more to uncover. So far I [...]
Just moments ago I received an exclusive invitation to preview Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing. I’ve got video processing right now, but wanted to pass along these initial screen shots. After using Bing for about 30 minutes, I have to say I’m pretty impressed. It offers some great choices to filter pictures and video by [...]
While Microsoft and Yahoo enjoys an on-again, off-again acquisition relationship, rival Google continues to expand its lion’s share of search queries. In order to stay relevant in the highly lucrative search engine business, Microsoft today announced their newest challenge in the form of Bing, which is to be followed shortly by an $80 million advertising [...]
In this video InkShow, I take a quick look at the multi-touch applications that will be a part of the Microsoft Touch Pack for Windows 7: Surface Collage, Rebound, Blackboard, Garden Pond, Surface Globe, and the Surface Lagoon screen saver. Microsoft Surface technology can be felt all over this pack, from the screensaver to [...]
The hot topic of conversation lately seems to be the app stores that are popping up for mobile devices. Matthew Miller, on his Smartphones and Cell Phones blog, has a rundown of the terms and conditions at four mobile app marketplaces, which is an important factor to consider in your purchasing, though I’m sure many [...]
Word out of Ars Technica is Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, is developing a method to run mobile-type Android apps on desktop-type Ubuntu, as well as other flavors of Linux. Sounds great for anyone with an Android phone and Linux PC, which is a pretty narrow sliver of the population, but I think the [...]
It looks like Microsoft has made Service Pack 2 for Vista and Windows Server 2008 available for download. Here’s a link to what you can expect with SP2 and here’s the link for the download.
Nokia has gone live with its Ovi App Store which I’m sure is going to make Nokia users the world over extremely happy. According to Nokia reps, over 50 million folks can take advantage of it as of today on 50 Nokia models. That said, according to some sources, like TechCrunch, things aren’t smooth sailing [...]
Lifehacker has assembled a list of 10 DIY projects to tackle on your day off. Most are tech-related, all are pretty cool. Likely to be of particular interest to GBM readers are a hack to create an all-in-one desktop out of a notebook and monitor, turning an old laptop into a wall-mounted computer, how to [...]
The wife and I are back home after a brief nature walk, which we made a bit briefer than planned after being beseiged by mosquitoes. In retrospect, we should have gone heavier on the repellent, but we were thick in the woods and swarmed by blood-sucking insects by the time we figured that out. Nothing [...]
Jorge Colombo used his iPhone to fingerpaint the cover of The New Yorker. It’s pretty darn impressive that a $4.99 app can help create such a high quality image. The application he used is called Brushes. The above screen recording was generated using a free companion application for Macs called Brushes Viewer. This application allows [...]
Leo from ritescript announced on the forum last night that an upgrade for ritePen 3.1 was released. It’s a minor bump-up, but it’s important because it addresses issues encountered and reported by GBM forum members. I upgraded last night, and it definitely works smoother for me. Really have to admire the ritePen guys for being [...]
Paul Thurrott is reporting that Microsoft will not place a 3 App limit previously planned for Windows 7 Starter Edition. That would be good news, but do recall that Ed Bott and others have reported that the 3 App limit was not nearly as restrictive as it sounds. Intriguingly and apparently another limit being placed [...]
I’d love to backup every last bit to my various cloud services, but the Internet tubes that lead from my office to services like Amazon S3, Sugarsync and MobileMe make it a daunting, if not impossible task. Amazon’s introducing a service called AWS Import/Export, which lets you mail an external backup drive to a data [...]
Our good friends at Microsoft Research, Raman and Ken, have released a new version of InkSeine that addresses a lot of issues and introduces some new features. Users of InkSeine should see the update notification pop-up when they exit out of InkSeine. It can also be downloaded directly from here (if you download it directly [...]
With talk of Dell’s Mini 10V running Android CupCake, Moblin 2.0 beta being released, HP’s Mini 1000 Mi, Unbuntu‘s Netbook Remix, and Windows 7 taking users where Vista could never take them, it has never been a better time to be a mobile user. Here’s a quick run-down on my personal experiences so far. I’ve [...]
Here’s a nice surprise that I discovered while quickly browsing feeds this morning. Amazon has updated its Kindle for the iPhone App adding a few new features. First up, the app now will rotate from Portrait to Landscape mode and there is a lock switch to keep the rotation from happening once you’ve decided how [...]

However, what about the idea of virtualizing the WiFi adpater card, thus turning one piece of hardware into virtually an unlimited number of WiFi radios? According to Long Zheng, the idea of Virtual WiFi was first explored by Microsoft Research and is now [...]
This is a curious one. Apple released an update to OSX yesterday or the day before (OSX 10.5.7). While some Macbook folks are reporting some problems after the update, some folks who have installed OSX on Netbooks are reporting an increase in battery life. Talk about interesting. Via The Apple Blog
I live and die by tasks. I’ve been using Things on my Mac and iPhone to manage my tasks and it works really well. Having tasks available while living in the cloud is a handy thing, though, and is something that Things does lack. Google has finally added a way to more easily work with [...]
If you want to join the waitlist for the Office 2010 Technical Preview, here’s the link to do so. No word on selection criteria as of yet, and users are to be notified in July if they made it. Not sure if that means you made it onto the waitlist or into the Technical Preview.
It is a slow trickle, but it is starting. In a blog post, David Rasmussen is letting us know that the OneNote team is anxious to start getting information about OneNote 2010 out to the public. That’s good. I think the legions of OneNote fans are eager to hear it. Remember, OneNote is the killer [...]
Talk about a crazy saga. The saga of the SlingPlayer Mobile app for the iPhone is one for the history books. Previewed at CES2009 with lots of fanfare, and then talked about incessantly since, the App has seen a long (too long) delay in getting approved in by Apple, and presumably AT&T.
Let’s hope this is just well thought out planning by the folks at Pogoplug and nothing more. Whatever the case, the Pogoplug people are responding to concerns that some have about placing data in the cloud.
Microsoft is heating up for something and playing leak to Twitter games. We’ve heard denials about a Zune phone from Redmond, but this little Twitter exchange seems to hint otherwise. Of course just like in politics, when someone denies something many times it means just the opposite. Who really knows, but I’m guessing June is [...]
Oh, my. Looks like we have some new info on when Windows 7 will officially roll out coming from TechEd. According to Bill Veghte: With early RC testing and extensive partner feedback we’ve received, Windows 7 is tracking well for holiday availability. I’m sure this will make a lot of folks happy and a [...]
Huzzah! Amazon has put up an new web interface for the Kindle Store optimized for the iPhone that should make purchasing Kindle books a little easier. Also of note, the Surface platform is now supported by Microsoft Update and the [...]
