CES 2010: What would work better next time

Published

on

After running through what worked and what didn’t, the next thing I pondered was what I would change and what I’d do to improve it next time (assuming Xavier re-extends the invite and I forget how beat down tired I felt).

First, I would sacrifice the writing space and downsize to a slate UMPC. My 14″ Tablet PC isn’t mobile enough for something like this. Pen input was all I used on the go, so an external keyboard would work fine for those few instances when I have a work space. And using a video output solution like DisplayLink, I could have turned my hotel suite TV into a giant extended display, which I could have used for reviewing video. A modular system like that would have been wonderful.

Alternately, I was thinking about the Motion Computing F5. It’s designed for walking about. I think the handle would be useful. If I could get the rf reader to work with the CES badges, I could walk around getting people’s info with the wave of a tablet. Could be interesting.

Second, I need a better camera. I’ll be mining Xavier’s Flickr for his professional level photos, but we didn’t see all the same things. A single camera for video and stills was a good approach for me, so I’ll stick with that, and use my phone, be it my Droid or the next iPhone, as backup and for instant blogging.

Third, better coordination. This is an internal thing, but I’ll mention for the record that Amy, Josh, and I discussed a lot of organizational improvements that we can implement next time. Some are high-level, pie-in-the-sky ideas. Others are as simple as a unified look. We’ll be a blogging commando squad next time.

Finally, personal branding. I was dreadfully unprepared in this respect with no business cards and no “Sumocat” branding. I know better now.

All that said, for a first-timer with limited time and resources, I don’t think I did too bad. My preparation for next year starts now.

Dude, for a first-timer you’ve already admitted you’re going back to CES and that’s a win by itself! ;) Great to meet you in person out there!

I guess the ‘Phantom’ Apple tablet would be a get device to use at CES, however it doesn’t sound like it will have pen input.
