Clearwire Announces Rover Puck Mobile Hotspot, Pre-Paid 4G Service

Published

on

The days of $60 per month mobile hotspots with two-year contracts are getting some serious competition. This time it’s in the form of a new mobile hotspot called the Rover Puck, which is being sold by Clearwire. The Rover Puck costs $149 and can support up to eight devices at a time. Unlimited pre-paid 4G service costs $50 per month, $20 per week or $5 per day. The Rover Puck only supports 4G, which means it won’t switch over to 3G in areas that aren’t well-covered by WiMax.

Rover, ClearWire’s pre-paid brand, will also offer a $99 USB modem.

Unlike smartphones, mobile hotspots aren’t used on a daily basis by most users, making them very expensive on a per-use basis. I’ve been very satisfied with my Sprint MiFi card, but I will probably swap it out for something that supports 4G and a more flexible payment plan in the coming months.

Seems strange that they’d start a new brand when CLEAR is still so new. They may be trying to saturate the market with faux competition, like how Starbucks opens new coffee shops under different names to trick anti-Starbucks folks. Certainly they seem to be establishing Rover as a more “extreme” brand with their claims of “Battery: Up to 4 hours of nonstop Pucking” and “SSID: Bust out two Service Set IDs – one for you and one for your Puck buddies”. Obvious references to the “extreme” activity of hockey.

Missed one: “Charging: Includes a USB, wall adapter and car charger, so you can Puck and refresh wherevs.”

Different marketing for different folks. Sprint and Virgin Mobile are another example. Completely different marketing speak, but at least Sprint doesn’t stoop as low with the lingo.
