Connecting up with Wellphone XT

Ico_skin_mainDuring the Microsoft MVP Summit, I was given an evaluation license of an application that really piqued my interest – SmartCom’s Wellphone XT.

One of the problems I’ve had with UMPCs in general is the lack of WWAN connectivity. Devices that size need to have seamless solutions to connecting to the internet while away from WIFI. The solution we always hear about is to connect via a bluetooth phone. Unfortunately, that is much easier said than done for the average consumer.

WellPhone XT to the resuce –this application, enhanced for the touch interface of a Ultra-Mobile PC, is designed to make it much easier to connect to the internet via a bluetooth phone. As soon as the application is launched, it begins to search for bluetooth devices, walks you through the pairing of the device, and then it is automatically set up as a connectivity option – no GeekSquad required. In addition to supporting bluetooth, serial, usb, and infrared are also supported via compatible phones. They also have a product for the Mac OS.

Unfortunately, my Motorola Q SmartPhone is not on the list of currently supported devices, but I am looking forward to giving this application a try if I can find someone who has a compatible phone. If your phone is on the list, download their trial and report back. I’d love to hear your impressions of the product. I understand that they are actively at work on adding new phones to the list, so keep checking their support devices list.

WellPhone XT is available for $59.
