Cricket Wireless: 10 Things to Know Before You Sign Up

Published

on

Cricket Wireless is a popular prepaid carrier that offers a wide selection of nearly free phones and high-end devices like the Cricket Wireless Galaxy S9 and even the Cricket Wireless iPhone X on plans that start at $30 a month for smartphones. Before you sign up for Cricket Wireless and spend money on a new phone there are some things you need to know about the service.

We’ll walk you through what Cricket Wireless plans offer, what you need to know about Cricket Wireless phones and other details that customers need to consider when choosing a new carrier. One major change over the last year or so is that you can easily get an iPhone on Cricket Wireless.

In the last year, Cricket Mobile gained more exposure thanks to widespread commercials touting the affordable plans and the latest deal which is 4 lines of unlimited data and free phones for $100 a month.

There are no contracts with Cricket Wireless and the payments are month to month. Users can set up auto payments so there is no need to constantly buy refill cards or make a payment.

Here are 10 things that buyers need to know before switching to Cricket Wireless.

What Phones are on Cricket?

The Cricket Wireless phones include a wide selection of smartphones from affordable and nearly free to the latest and greatest like the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X.

Cricket Wireless phones include Windows Phone, Android and iPhone. You may need to wait for the iPhone 11 or Galaxy S10 to arrive on Cricket Wireless.

The Cricket Wireless phones include many good options, but also bad choices.

The Cricket Wireless phones include many good options, but also bad choices.

Keep in mind that you get what you pay for, so some of the cheap phones will not come close to matching the experience of newer devices.

The best Cricket Wireless smartphones on sale now are;

  • iPhone 7
  • iPhone 7 Plus
  • iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone 8
  • iPhone X
  • Samsung Galaxy S9

There are many other options that may perform well, but these devices are proven winners, even the older ones listed above.

Can I Use My Own Phone on Cricket Wireless?

Cricket Wireless lets users bring their own phone to use on the service, but you cannot just bring any phone.

Bring your own phone to Cricket Wireless if it is unlocked and runs on a GSM network.

Bring your own phone to Cricket Wireless if it is unlocked and runs on a GSM network.

For this to work, you need an unlocked smartphone. If you are on AT&T you are using a GSM smartphone and you can ask AT&T to unlock your phone after you meet contract stipulations. T-Mobile also uses GSM networks. You can bring some Sprint and Verizon Wireless smartphones to Cricket including the most iPhones and Nexus devices.

You can enter your phone’s IMEI number into the tool on this page to see if it will work with the Cricket Wireless network. If it does you need to buy a Cricket Wireless SIM card and plan. A SIM card is $9.99.

Cricket Wireless Plans

New Cricket Wireless plans start at $30 a month.

New Cricket Wireless plans start at $30 a month.

The most recognized Cricket Wireless plan is the Basic Smartphone plan that the company features in commercials for $30 with taxes and fees included.

  • 2GB – 2GB 4G LTE, Unlimited talk and text – $30
  • 5GB – 5GB 4G LTE, Unlimited talk and text – $40
  • Unlimited – Unlimited 4G LTE (3mbps cap), Unlimited talk and text – $55
  • Unlimited MAX – Unlimited 4G LTE, Unlimited talk and text, – $55

With the Unlimited option if you use more than 22GB of data in a billing period your speeds may be slowed. The Unlimited Plan also includes the option to add on 8GB of high speed hotspot usage.

The Unlimited and Unlimited Max Cricket Wireless plans include unlimited talk and messaging to Mexico and Canada and Unlimited International texting. You can even use your phone in Canada and Mexico without outrageous fees. This excludes the Northwest Territories of Canada.

Cricket Wireless Coverage Map

The Cricket Wireless coverage map shows a lot of coverage inside the U.S., including parts of Alaska and Hawaii. You can check your Cricket Wireless coverage using their online tool, but in general, the coverage matches AT&T.

The Cricket Wireless coverage map matches AT&T.

In early 2015 AT&T bought Cricket Wireless to turn the service into a premium pre-paid brand for the company. With this information we know that Cricket Wireless coverage matches AT&T, as they run on the same towers.

Cricket Wireless Speed Test

In the video above you can see a Cricket Wireless speed test with a comparison between Cricket Wireless and Straight Talk. When you are on the Cricket Wireless 4G LTE network, you can enjoy decent speeds, but some users report that even with 4G LTE smartphones the speeds are not as good as on AT&T in some areas. The speed and quality of a network can vary dramatically from block to block and building to building.

Cricket Wireless caps the speed at 8Mbps so you will not likely see any higher speeds, at least not on a consistent basis.

Cricket Wireless Stream More Plan

Starting in April 2017 Cricket Wireless offers a Stream More plan that allows you to watch videos in 480P, a lower quality, which uses less data. This will allow you to watch more without using as much data. You can log in to your account to turn it off if you want to watch in a higher resolution or you don’t need the feature.

Cricket Wireless Tethering and Hotspot

There is a Cricket Wireless tethering or Cricket Wireless mobile hotspot feature that you can add to the two most expensive plans.

A mobile hotspot allows users to share data from the smartphone to a laptop or a tablet. You must pay $10 more a month to access this and it uses your current data that is already in your plan.

The current Cricket Wireless terms outline using apps, adapters or other means to add a Cricket Wireless hotspot option to your phone without paying as misuse and abuse.

Cricket Wireless Software Updates

When you buy a phone on Cricket Wireless, keep in mind that this may impact how fast you get new features.

Cricket Wireless software updates are slower on Android.

Cricket Wireless software updates are slower on Android.

Apple delivers iPhone updates to all eligible iPhones at the same time, so the Cricket Wireless iPhone will get iOS updates at the same time as devices on Verizon and AT&T.

Android phones will get new software updates later than on a major carrier.

Cricket Wireless Family Plans

If you need more than one phone line on Cricket Wireless you can use their Group Save option to save up to $100 a month with five eligible lines.

Save with a Cricket Wireless family plan option called Group Save.

Save with a Cricket Wireless family plan option called Group Save.

When you add a second line get a $10 a month discount. The third line gets a $20 discount, fourth line a $30 discount and fifth line a $40 discount. These discounts are monthly so you can save on every bill.

This only works on the Basic, Smart and Unlimited plans, not on the basic $25 a month plan or discontinued and grandfathered plans. You cannot get the auto-pay discount with Cricket family plans and data is not shared between phones.

Cricket Wireless Throttling

If you use Cricket Wireless data too much, you can see a reduction in your speeds. If you go over the high-speed allowance that you pay for each month, the data speeds will slow for the rest of the month.

Cricket states, “When your data use exceeds the respective high-speed access allowance, your data download speeds will be reduced to a maximum 128Kbps for the remainder of your monthly billing cycle.”

This throttling is not in place for the high-speed data you pay for, and some users will find it nice to still have slower access when they go over the amount they pay for, instead of being cut off completely.

Sorry to tell you Debrah, but you can argue until your face turns every color of the rainbow; but they’re NOT going to compensate you and/or refund you the difference. I bought a ZTE Grand Max X+ last Saturday and the Power button fell out/off of my unit on Sunday and they will will NOT Replace my unit or repair it. Instead, they want me to spend an EXTRA $75.00 to claim it out nd have them send me a refurbished phone. (HELL F’ck! NO!) Their Customer Service is PISS POOR at BEST. So just do your homework and monitor your account if using your credit card. Since I’ve now been doing my research I see that there’s a LOT of Complaints for Card Fraud involving them. Good Luck. V. Larry you really should buy a dictionary:
          loose
          lo͞os/Submit
          adjective
          comparative adjective: looser
          1.
not firmly or tightly fixed in place; detached or able to be detached.
          “a loose tooth”
synonyms: not fixed in place, not secure, unsecured, unattached; More
          2.
(of a garment) not fitting tightly or closely.
“she slipped into a loose T-shirt and shorts”
synonyms: baggy, generously cut, slack, roomy; More

          Burt is correct:
          los·er
          ˈlo͞ozər/Submit
          noun
a person or thing that loses or has lost something, especially a game or contest.
          synonyms: defeated person, also-ran, runner-up
“the loser still gets the silver medal”
a person who accepts defeat with good or bad grace, as specified.
“we won fair and square—they should concede that and be good losers”
a person or thing that is put at a disadvantage by a particular situation or course of action.
“children are the losers when politicians keep fiddling around with education”

From your conclusion and the way you articulated it, you give off the impression that you’re blinded by a thick fog of ignorance and extreme self righteousness. I don’t know, maybe most people that use Cricket wireless are just trying to save money? I don’t know, that might have something to do with it.
Anyways…. Cricket Wireless is the shit! It’s cheap and it works as good as the most popular providers. I love it!

Considering you get more for your money.. it’s actually a smart choice… I have att currently..my bill is 100 a month… if I go to cricket.. (which was bought out by att and uses the same network) I only have to pay 45 a month for pretty much the same features.. yes I have to buy the phone straight out.. but I don’t really care about that cost when att charges 30 a month for the “next feature”… over all you save money have the same coverage.. plus you don’t have to buy their phones if you don’t want to.. just buy a game unlocked or att out right… and no I’m not a drug dealer … and I’ve had t mobile before.. and their service was a joke around here… so Larry why don’t you just grow up and stop acting like a complete moron and just do a little bit of research before you speak. ..maybe you’re just the loser…

Um..no, I have been using Cricket since 2008 when I was working with the American Red Cross and couldn’t get T-Mobile service on Galveston Island after the storm hit. Ironically, the “looser” service of Cricket worked fine. I have had consistently good service with them since then, even in disaster areas (such as south east Oklahoma in 2012). I have even had service that has outperformed Sprint and Verizon in some rural areas and it was often 1/3 the monthly price of those carriers. I’m not a “dope dealer” and from what I can tell, I am defiantly more educated than you. So…there’s that.

This article isn’t super well researched.

With respect to coverage, Cricket matches AT&T NATIVE coverage, but not AT&T’s roaming coverage. If you compare AT&T’s map, for example, pretty good coverage in Nebraska and New Mexico is available via roaming, whereas a Cricket user will have No Service in large parts of those states. However, Cricket coverage outside those few states will be identical to AT&T since AT&T doesn’t rely on roaming for very much of the country.

With regard to plans, Cricket offers a 20GB plan for the price of the 10GB plan, but ONLY if you have a 4GLTE phone. You should see it in your plan choices, it’s called “Advanced.” This is by far the best deal in prepaid I’ve ever seen – 20GB for $55 (with autopay).

With respect to phone locking, my online research shows locked AT&T phones DO work fine on Cricket, as was the case with the old name of new Cricket, aio wireless.

Aio was always a subsidiary of AT&T, and later when AT&T bought Cricket, they rebranded Aio as Cricket and began migrating all Old Cricket (CDMA) users over to the former “Aio” (AT&T) network and billing system. Plans of New Cricket are very similar to the Aio plans but have since been upgraded with more data.

Finally, the throttling Cricket does when a user goes over their bandwidth is no secret – Cricket explains that very directly on their plans page. This is just like what AT&T does to its old “unlimited” plan users when they cross the 3GB mark. What’s more interesting is the throttling Cricket does of data at all times:

Cricket uses a proxy server to cap (throttle) your data speeds at all times to 8Mbps if you are on LTE, and 4Mbps if you are on HSPA+ or 3G. This is in contrast to AT&T’s GoPhone prepaid service, which is more expensive, offers less data (4GB instead of 20GB), but does not throttle. While this is disappointing, I think it’s worth it as long as you do have an LTE phone (which really everyone should have). The reason is that AT&T isn’t reliably faster than 8Mbps in most areas anyway, so the throttling isn’t a huge effect now. But in a couple years if technology and AT&T’s network improves, but they don’t lift the cap, this could be a huge annoyance for Cricket users.

Personally I would pay an extra $15-20 a month to get the same exact 20GB plan without the capping, and another $5 to stop obnoxiously disabling my phone’s mobile hotspot feature. Too bad Cricket (or AT&T) don’t offer that level of service at any price!

      02/20/2016 at 12:44 am

cricket cant roam on att’s roaming partner towers? care to cite sources? I work for a cricket resaler and this is not what I was lead to believe. I cant remember every word of the 30 hrs of training we received so maybe i missed it maybe it wasnt presented, maybe you are incorrect.

something i would be telling you regardless of my employment status…aka even if they fired me because i am a tech at heart not a cricket sales men:

you are right that cricket is limited at 8mb/s on lte. But you should really try to find a scenario where 8mb/s is limiting on your phone.

before i explain anything else, you should know that unless you have a samsung note 4 or s6 your phone literally can not record the data it is downloading any faster than about 20mb/s
      https://www.phonearena.com/news/AndroBench-comparison—the-Samsung-Galaxy-S6—S6-Edges-memory-speeds-obliterate-other-flagships_id66813

got $100 smart phone? it probably cant save files faster than that 8 mb/s anyway.

      next,

seriously what the hell are you doing on your phone that needs 40mb/s? netflix steams in hd at 5/mbs, google navigate, youtube (below super hd) and standard web browsing all work as well at 8 as they do at 40

the main thing the faster speeds are good for is downloading multiple GB files. like torrents, operating systems or software… on a computer (remember your phone cant save the file that fast anyway)

say you illegally download your shows instead of watching them or semi legally streaming them…. then that 40mb/s is gonna get the 1000mb(1gb) torrent of the episode downloaded faster but if you used it for that your data plan would hit its limit on almost any carrier. even those calming unlimited have a limit if you check the fine print. you dont even have to hit that limit for them to boot you though, all you have to do is consistently use more than the “average” unlimited user and you will be flagged in most systems.

for regular web browsing the fact is even on your 60gb/s plus cable modem at home… the website and your computer rarely interact faster than 1 or 2 mb/s … unless they are hosting their server on a very high end with a company like amazon or microsoft standard web hosting practice is limit speeds from the computer hosting the page to the computer requesting the page so more users may be served at a time.

last possible thing I can see that 8mb/s sec being an issue for is using hotspot service to give several people access to youtube or netflix. once again 8mb/s is going to serve up normal pages like this one just fine for 3 or 4 people. Get 3 people on youtube watching videos in hd and once again… there goes your data allowance.

all that said; once again… wth do you need 40mb/s on your phone for? im not a fan of the size of any providers data caps…ill be the first to say that, but with things how they are in the US mobile market, 8mb/s is not hurting you.

      • Peter

        02/27/2016 at 5:51 am

John, Thanks for the write up…good info to know, and seems like it’s exactly what I thought about 8mb/s . I have AT&T right now and the speed really does vary …I can see my speeds run from 1 mb/s to over 20mb/s, really dependent on time of day or my location. I’ve never noticed a difference for my Facebooking , using my apps, or web pages (on iPhone 5s). I think I’m switching from unlimited plan on ATT (going to $81/month) and I’ll go with Crickets 5Meg plan/$45. I looked at my usage for last year and average about 2.1 Meg a month for the year, so I’ll take the $35+ a month savings!

I was on Cricket last year and switched to AT&T earlier this year. Cricket doesn’t have the same coverage as AT&T. The proof is in my observations while traveling. Also it’s just common sense. Why would any major carrier offer the same coverage for $$ less through their own mvno? Wouldn’t it be easier to just shoot themselves in their feet.

I can’t speak of AT&T branded phones, because I bought my own unlocked and separately branded Android phone (Sony Xperia Z3 compact), but use it on AT&T. I have a recent plan (not unlimited data) and can use my hotspot feature.

On Verizon, my wife had an unlimited plan for the longest time and I think she was unable to use her hotspot while under unlimited (or I think she would be charged, though I’m uncertain as I think I’m mixing up memories). Recently she switched since she was using nowhere near enough data to make it worthwhile to spend so much to maintain her grandfathered plan. Now, she can use her hotspot without extra charge.

20gb plan (advanced plan) for $60 is NO longer offered. 10gb (pro plan) for $60 is their current plan for high data users.

I had used Cricket since 2007 up until 2014. I never had an issue using my phone wherever I went. I only traveled to NY in my car once there and bk. Throughout the Appalachian mountains I never lost service. The only reason I left Cricket was because of their phones at the time. The Cricket I started out with didn’t have a real nice variety of phones to choose from. Although , I only chose phones that were btw 150-170$ . A mid phone since they are disposable anyway due to the new market every year. I never bought the insurance since only a portion of it was not covered. I left my phone on my jeep once and totally smashed it and had to buy a new one. I started out with Cricket in MO. and moved to IL. Still my service was good. Up until the middle of Cricket changing towers however my service sucked. Cricket was transitioning to At&t and sometimes my calls would drop and phone would just randomly shut down. All in all I would recommend this service to anyone. Especially since they have a better selection of Android phones.

I recently switched from Verizon over to Cricket. I must say, I’m getting great coverage just like Verizon, minus the expensive phone bill. Greatest of all, Cricket runs off AT&T towers. I love my service. All smiles here….. :-)

And by the way, I’ve had T-Mobile service thru a 2 year contract from July 2012 until July 2014 before going over to Verizon and throughout the entire 2 years, I was always on the phone speaking with reps about different issues every other day from billing up to coverage. I’ve always had constant dropped calls and other coverage issues. As soon as my contract ended, I ran from T-Mobile and never looked back. My best experience was with Verizon, only issue I had was I wanted to tighten down on my expenses so that’s when I researched Cricket wireless and found out they were owned by AT&T. I gave them a try and I been happy ever since. I have no issues, no dropped calls, and Cricket works well in buildings just like Verizon. Basically AT&T service for fraction of the price. I went with the $50 plan and with auto pay, my bill comes out to $45 a month. Anyhow, most of my friends, familt, and co workers went over to Cricket and they’re happy too.

I believe Cricket now has hotspot as an add-on with some plans. The article should be updated.

I’ve had Cricket for four months now. I live in California and have traveled throughout the state, including the east side of the Sierra mountains where cell service is spotty. I’ve had no problem with the coverage, even in that remote area. Cricket also just announced that with its $50 and $60 plans, roaming is now included when traveling to Mexico and soon to Canada (voice and text only, no data). My biggest complaint with Cricket is their customer service. It is really bad. But as long as your phone is working, you shouldn’t have to deal with them. For phones, you may be better off buying an unlocked GSM phone from EBay or Amazon, then installing the Cricket SIM card. I picked up a new (refurbished) iPhone 5s on eBay for about $300. It works great.

There is a lot of wrong information in the post. You guys should probably do some more thorough research before provide a guide. For instance, AT&T phone do not need to be unlocked to work on the Cricket Network, as AT&T owns Cricket and they use the same network. T-Mobile phones that are unlocked and GSM compatible work and there are even some Sprint and Verizon models that will work if unlocked and GSM compatible. Also, they do have sales from time to time for 99 cent sim cards, but the normal price is $9.99, not $4.99. I won’t even speak on the iPhone section as you clearly contradict yourself. Users, if you want an iPhone 6, just buy one factory unlocked directly from Apple,it will be unbranded and will work on the Cricket network.Let’ see what else, oh, the S5 does have Lollipop software.I’m sure there is more but overall this review will really confuse some people and should probably be taken down. Bad information for a great service.

  14. kassy astorga

    09/10/2015 at 3:19 pm

Marcus is correct. AT&T DOES NOT need to unlock phones so they can work at Cricket Wireless. Yes we do indeed now offer hotspot on select devices, more will be added soon.(See the list of eligigle devices on Cricket Wireless website) Currently our Samsung devices now run on Lollipop software. Yes only GSM devices can be activated at Cricket, meaning: any AT&T phone or UNLOCKED Tmobile/ Metro PCS phones (Telcel/IUSAcell have worked as well).

I’m currently on my parents plan and I want to break off of it and start my own plan. This Cricket plan seems REALLY affordable. We are on AT&T currently and I have an iPhone 6. My question is this: will I be able to bring my AT&T phone number to Cricket? I have a lot of contacts and would hate for everyone to have to get a new number for me.

    • Claudia

      09/13/2015 at 1:03 am

Trinidad yes you can keep your same number just by having the account number and security pin of the At&t who ever in your family has accces or the account holder should just provide you that information I did the same with mines and it works great!

I just spoke with two different reps about this and was told that if you don’t buy your phone from cricket they restrict your access to LTE. Both reps tried to make a lot of changes on their end to get this phone to use LTE but nothing worked. One of their It’s are supposed to be calling me. Does anybody know if this is true? Cricket is EVIL they stole $147.97 from me. I went on line to upgrade my son’s phone as his Christmas present and input my credit card info. The calmed the transaction did not go through because i entered my address wrong so i redid it and got the same result (there was nothing wrong with my address). I checked my credit card on line and it listed a transaction for $147.97 from Cricket wireless THEY TOOK THE CASH! I tried the on line chat at cricket and was told no transaction occurred and then just kept repeating that. I called they customer service number and at first I got people who barely spoke English in some third world sh**hole who finally sent me to a supervisor who hung up on me. I kept trying till I got some towlhead who told me he was in California (but obviously not an English speaker) who calmed he was the highest authority at cricket and he could do nothing since I had no order number just a bank transaction ID. So here I am screwed out of the money and the phone i am filing criminal charges against cricket.

PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR NEVER USE CRICKET WIRELESS THEY ARE EVIL.

      08/24/2016 at 8:56 am

I know this is an old form but just in case someone else runs across it I wanted to clarify that it probably wasn’t Cricket’s fault for these charges. From my experience, 90% of the time it’s the third party they use for credit card processing.

I work for a company that started offering online purchases and we discovered this same issue. If a transaction failed we wouldn’t receive the money and therefore would not be able to refund it – however the processing company would pull the funds and hold them in case it did go through later on. I found that typically the hold is released within a day or two automatically. If you need the funds right away call Visa, Mastercard, AMEX (or whatever card you use) and request for them to be released. They are ultimately the only ones capable of doing that. (It’s similar to when you use a debit card at a gas station and get a $200 hold on your card for $20 worth of gas.)

Ultimately we ended up switching credit card processing companies because it was terrible dealing with these types of situations. Can’t really throw the blame on the third party (even though it’s true) when you’re dealing with customers but our hands were tied trying to figure out helpful/convenient solutions for the customers.

  30. Derek Carson

Seems to me that if you like at&t you will like cricket. It’s just alot slower and the customer service is infact terrible. They sell out of the game stops and use over seas call centers to cut cost. Want fast, go at&t post paid, want value. I’m cricket hands down because I can program my apn myself and it is accurate that if you want a fully functional phone on cricket, buy it from them or bring it from at&t. My unlocked T-Mobile S5, did not work for crap on Cricket and they “have no idea why”… If you want the best bang for your buck on at&t it’s cricket over straight talk if you don’t mind being throttled to get more data over all. Straight talk on AT&T is not throttled until you reach you 5gb. I’d rather get 10gb at 8Mbps than 5gb at up to 20+Mbps in places…. For Verizon best bang for your buck is page plus cellular who is owned by straight talk now from what I understand. I’ve used every carrier now and I’d say the if you want to balance coverage and cost while getting the largest LTE allotment and at&t will work where you live, go with cricket. They do offer tethering for an additional $10 a month. The 20gb plan is not something they do anymore or I’d jump on the additional 10gb of data for what I’m paying for 10gb. I’m happy with cricket and I’m not a drug dealer. JS

I took my s5 to cricket a year ago and bought my kids (2 of them) iPhone 5s. When my wife’s contract runs out (we all had Verizon), she’s coming too. It will be half the price, the service is pretty damn good, we all get 5gb each, and we will be paying HALF the price. I am sick of specifying almost $300 a month for service. I don’t care if Verizon is the best, the gouge customers for it. Cricket is just fine.

Also kudos to that Larry guy above for putting one over all of you.

  33. Erick

    02/13/2016 at 11:41 pm

I left AT&T postpaid paying nearly $280 per month for three lines, two tablets and two installment plans. We had great service and fast reliable 4G LTE speeds but we just could no longer afford or justify $280 per month.

So after I learned that Cricket merged with AT&T and would now be using AT&T I made the switch to Cricket.

At Cricket, I pay only $90 for three lines that all have unlimited talk and text and 2.5 GB of data each. I am saving $190 per month!!!!

We have Wi-Fi at home and that is where the tablets are primarily used.

Each Line rarely goes over 2.5 GB but I did this month and I must say the throttling wasn’t too bad. I mean pictures took longer to load and a course videos were buffered but I could still FB and browse the internet just fine.

It’s hard to explain but LTE is a little slower with Cricket compared to AT&T postpaid but not really noticeable except at first but then you get use to it.

I bought my father a cricket phone and nothing but problems. Expect extra spam phone calls, in 2 months 275 and no one we knew had that number. I could not stop them and when trying to get cricket involved, pay more money.

    02/16/2016 at 3:47 pm

One thing that sucks is, Cricket lets you know AFTER you order, that someone has to be there and sign for it at the address on your sales contract. You cannot divert the shipment to your job, another UPS store or even a local Cricket store, it has to be the address on your shipping label. So, you have to take a day off of work to wait for your 60.00 phone. Not reasonable. I have to wait for the UPS guy to try to deliver three times at my address before they will put the money back on my card. Dumb. Best Buy has the same plan from AT+T, so Best Buy-AT+T is is . . .

25.00 more in-store for some reason. The guy at the Cricket store told me to do it online to avoid the 25.00 fee. Im not a phone person. Im still using a 90’s soapbar. I thought I studied updating this stuff, obviously not enough. Its turned out to be quite problematic. I think its crazy that they are unbending in their requirement that it has to be signed for at the location on the credit card/delivery address. I buy tons of stuff on-line, I’ve never had this issue before with anything. Oh well . . Live and learn. AT&T/Best Buy tomorrow.

I was told the industry is being leaned on by the federal government to stem the creation of “burner” phones… like the type a drug dealer uses, prepaid, no address on file tosses the sim or entire phone every few months.

I am a cricket employee who recently went through training. I know we are instructed not to set up a line unless you show us government issued ID.

it didnt mention online orders but I would imagine requiring you to sign for it at your home address has a similar effect. could you have it shipped to a friends house and stay with them until it was delivered? sure but there would still be a house hold of people to come talk to if there were criminal issues.

im not sure i agree with the policy but I understand the motivation.

Hello John, I forgot about this post until I got a message saying you replied to it. For the sake of fairness, I am glad I can respond and make it clear that I did get my phone at my work address. It was a day later and a complete surprise because both Cricket and UPS Customer Service told me that there was absolutely no way the phone could be diverted due to the requirement of a person signing for it at the address listed in the credit card. I did not know that at first and changed the shipping address through UPS. When the address did not change is when I called both Customer Services, and they were adamant, it cant be changed! But, a day later the warehouse person from my job brings the phone to me, so I am assuming UPS took it upon themselves to change it? Either way, I do have it and am very happy with it. It’s all nu-tech for me so the learning curve is steep one. I used chat module to find out why I have no data left after only three days, (no streaming, no vids, no radio ,etc . . . ) but that is for a different thread! Thank you for responding to my post and I hope you have a great day!!!

Cricket employees instructed to never sell the $40 plan with 2.5 speed. They will only sell the $50 plan, give you a $10 credit for 1st month then downgrade you to the $40 plan. Seems rather shady. Recently signed up in their Bozeman store.

Pronounced Loozers (note: a line over the two oo, s); a noun, a person or thing that loses or it has lost something, especially a game or contest. Correctly spelled as “Loser”! Creative fun way to enter into the incorrect way to spell “Looser”. As the texts clearly just wants to insult the man’s intellect. Looser, Comparative adjective: looser, 1. not firmly fixed in place; detached or able to be detached. Comparatively speaking this tooth is looser than that tooth.

Cricket coverage is superb, data speeds are fast, features are comparable to AT&T & Verizon. Buy your phone unlocked or outright locked to AT&T’s network & over the year you will make up the difference vs. post paid installment plans that takes years to pay off. Cricket also has a wide variety of phones to choose from. I suggest getting a device with more than 8 GB of storage. Mark my words. Not the end of the world if you have an SD card or you don’t download many apps.

Postpaid data may be slightly faster, the average user does not need anything beyond the speeds that Cricket offers. Also most post paid carriers no longer offer unlimited data & they love to see contract subscribers burn through data faster at higher speeds to charge the user $10 to $15 a MB.

Bottom line, great service, fast data, affordable for individuals & families.

Love my Cricket service, coverage great everywhere in USA so far from all over in state of Wisconsin to Texas to Colorado, Arizona to Alabama to Kentucky to Minnesota and everywhere in between whether in metro areas, on interstate highways or in rural areas….top notch!! Best part is that I only pay 1/2 as much for unlimited talk, text and 2.5 GB 4gLTE service!! Anxiuos to travel East next and confident my service and coverage will be superb. I was with Consumer Cellular (ATT towers) several years ago. Always good reception until NASCAR came to town(big crowds). For the entire weekend I got a message that said “no service” After the race the service was good again. Same thing the next year. I switched to Cricket this past January. During race day weekend, my phone went dead again. Then one day later, the service magically reappeared! It is obvious to me that ATT takes care off their premier customers first, but as a Cricket customer, it is prudent for me to maintain my landline for truly dependable service.

What aircard do i use? At&t or cricket?

  56. Bev Knox

    06/29/2016 at 7:27 pm

Yeah but does at&t offer unlimited data plan?? You can get faster download speeds with at&t but then you are limited to how much data you can have. So, I have unlimited data plan with cricket. I am at 214GB used this month and plan renews in 3 days. I am getting 8gbps download speeds and am happing watching netflix and slingtv on my phone. Or I could have paid a hell of a lot more money to at&t and used up my very fast download data plan and then be out the rest of the month or paid for overages. With cricket, there are no hidden fees. I don’t worry about opening my bill every month and arguing with customer service to get my bleeping outrageous bill reduced. Also keeps my blood pressure down.

  57. Bev Knox

    06/29/2016 at 7:31 pm

Don’t forget about the price. Cricket is only $65.00 a month with autopay and that includes taxes and fees. It’s always exactly $65.00 a month with my current unlimited data plan.

How much would it be with the unlimited plan and the WiFi hotspot/tethering? It should run on a unlocked GSM S7 edge?

The insurance is terrible. They insurance is $7 a month and says it covers physical damage, but my phone got damaged and I had to pay a $75 nonrefundable deductible. I have been paying the insurance for over a year so I have already paid $96 in insurance. So now that I have paid the $75 deductible I have spent $171 on a phone only worth $99. Needless to say i’m pissed!!!!

Ok so if I’m in a contract with AT&T currently can you switch over to cricket???

    • Darrell Perry

      08/23/2016 at 4:56 pm

No you cannot. You sign up with cricket, port your number, then break your contract. They send you a bill for the contract breach. Happened to me. Good riddance to high bills!

Burt, you were correct with the word loser. Larry doesnt know how to spell. He put LOOSER, which is what you commented on…like someones pants are looser than his. And he claimed you didnt know how to spell. What a LOSER Larry is…..or should I say LOOSER , so he knows what I mean. Lol

Here is my review of Cricket after a year ~ Im not phone person, just use 35$ plan for utilitarian purposes like the old daze. I have had absolutely no issues. Maybe one network outage for about 15 minutes in this past year. KY area. They have never tried to sneak a fake charge in for anything. I have had two other networks over the past 15 years: Verizon got no coverage in my state(VT) and I had to call the Attorney General on them to stop billing me after the contract expired, and T-Mobile, that dropped coverage from one mile to the next and might add 3 or 4 bogus charges every month. So, compared to those two scam companies, Cricket is a dream.

It is actually spelled, not spelt, & yeah i know this is a year later. Looser sounds like the o’s in Moose where Loser sounds like the O in ooze which is the word you really wanted there. Unless you wanted to say druggie dope dealers pants are looser today than yesterday in which case that would be the correct spelling.

My husband and i have the zte grand x3 phones and we have the unlimited plan at 70 a month each. I stream a lot! No slow down. We do live in a dead spot area so calling or getting calls at home sucks but we love cricket and our service and we pay a quarter for 2 phones compared to Verizon

BEWARE Cricket has the worst customer service ever. As long as you never need any customer service you will be happy and save money. If you ever need service you can consistently expect people with language barriers answering the calls, people who are no help whatsoever chatting, and a visit to the store with more often than not rude employees. The last customer service rep did a wadded kleenex drug transaction with a guy with tracks on his arms while I was buying a phone. My phone is stolen and three hours into customer waiting, calling, and chatting. I must take off work to go handle it in person.

Right from the start I have had trouble with the phone from Cricket. The phone freezes & is extremely slow. Also, the salesgirl conveniently didn’t put the receipt in the bag. With many pre-loaded apps & little storage, I can’t download much else. Also the apps can’t be moved to the SD card that previously were on other phones. I paid for 8gb high speed data, but it’s been slow from day 1! I was ripped off!

I have had cricket on and off for many years, and I always go back to them when I want great phones at cheap prices with unsurpassed data speeds at uncapped usage. I have used cricket wireless just in the last year alone in 35 different states, and I only had one dropped call (in the mountains of Alabama) and had great data speeds comparable to all major networks nationwide. There are many great phones under $200, particularly the ZTE grand X max 2. For $150 you get a 6″ full HD display, 16 GB of internal memory (I also have a 64 GB micro SD in mine), android 6.1, a 15 megapixel camera, 4g LTE, and an octacore Snapdragon processor. I do everything I did with my Note 5, my iPhone, and all my other high end tablets that I paid upwards of $1000 for. I also use well over 40gb of data a month and it never slows down with the unlimited plan. No hidden fees either. Even on the cheap $30 plan your data only drops to 4g after data usage limits are reached, but I prefer to pay $55 for unlimited. I love Cricket. I will likely stay with them for good now.

They were good at first, but now their Customer Service is TERRIBLE, they keep increasing fees, and don’t give a crap about good customers that helped get them where they are so quickly. They have a “too big to fail”attitude. Don’t waste your money.Help the little guy!

Why would the 1GB and 3GB plans both be $40????

I looked at their “interactive map”. Are the green areas “parks” or “coverage”?
If it’s “coverage” than 99% of the country has *NO* cricket coverage at all.
    Very poor web-page design.
