Team GBM 2008 Holiday Gift Guide

Team GBM had a great time sitting around the fireplace last night in our festive Christmas attire listening to some Nat King Cole play over Warner’s iPhone. Yes, Warner does look quite festive in a red sweater vest, but when he broke out into a solo performance of Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (complete with dance moves), it was just too much to take in. And Matt? Well, let’s just say he got too friendly with the eggnog. Truc? He was pretty cool, but he kept going around sticking screen protectors on everyone. Go figure….

While we were all being jolly together, we swapped some ideas around about what we’d love to get or give for Christmas. Here is everyone’s list.

GBM InkShow: HP Mini 1000 Netbook

I have not been a huge fan of Netbooks, mostly due to the size of the keyboard, screen, and being worried about performance. Having a chance to review the HP Mini 1000 changed that for me, though.

The HP Mini 1000 is a fantastic choice for those wanting something more mobile without wanting to break the bank. I’ve been very impressed with the speed, the comfort of the keyboard, and spacious screen.

What’s In A Name? Loren Heiny Wonders

rose Loren Heiny is wondering what Tablet PCs would be called if they were released today. NetTablet? NetWriter? Hmm? I’m not sure, nor am I sure if it would make any difference. Remember for awhile it seemed that Netbooks were called just about anything from Mini-Notebooks to UMPCs and that created some confusion, at least in my mind.

Apple Says Users Should Get Anti-Virus Software

Netbooks Dominate Amazon’s Cyber Monday Sale

And you wonder why Intel’s VP of Sales and Marketing Stu Pann is poo-pooing Netbooks. PCWorld is reporting that Netbooks dominated Amazon.com’s Cyber Monday sales in computers. The Asus 900HA took the top slot followed by the Acer Aspire One and it looks like folks opted for the 6-cell battery option across the board. No real surprise there.

Blockbuster To Use Live Mesh To Stream Movies

blockbuster_live_mesh This promises to be interesting to say the least. A report in The Dallas Morning News says that Blockbuster will be using Microsoft’s Live Mesh to stream stream video to desktops and mobile devices.

"Eventually, we’ll give customers instant access to any movie on any device with an Internet connection and a screen," said Keith Morrow, Blockbuster’s chief information officer.

There’s not a lot of hard info yet and certainly no word on when and how, but this type type of delivery mechanism was the promise of Live Mesh plus Sliverlight when it was first being talked about. One of the possible features being talked about is allowing a customer to begin watching a movie on their TV and then being able to pause it, then pick up where the left off on a mobile device.

Is Nokia Developing a 10 inch Internet Tablet?

nokialogo Scuttlebutt is that Nokia may be working up a 9 or 10 inch Internet tablet that would have a touch screen and a secondary OLED screen, accompanied with Near Field Communication (NFC) for close in wireless links. Of course there is nothing but speculation at the moment and who knows if this is the device changer that the folks at TechCrunch/CrunchGear were touting in an earlier post or not. Of course if it was to be announced at this week’s Nokia World expo, that might put a damper on the TechCrunch Internet Tablet.

Touch Your Way to That Next BMW

Not that I think a lot of folks have a ton of cash floating around to go buy a Bimmer, but using a Microsoft Surface computer to help pick out that next car is a natural fit for multi-touch and natural user input technology. The application was written for BMW by VectorForm.

Check out BMW’s video below. Notice the use of color blocks that change the color of the car.
