Dell Inspiron Duo Hands On Video

Published

on

Avram Piltch at Laptop Mag got his hands on a Dell Inspiron Duo “NetTablet” and has put it through its paces. Actually, let me rephrase that. Avram has his hands on a prototype which he makes very, very clear. And that’s a good thing because based on the performance of this prototype Dell has a lot of work to do before units start shipping around mid-December.

In fact, I’d argue that Dell probably shouldn’t have made these prototypes available to reviewers if the performance really is as bad as what we see in the videos. In this fast paced world it doesn’t do anybody any good to see something performing poorly with a promise of “it will be better when the real units ship.” Now that said, we’ve reviewed many prototypes here at GBM and they all come with some rough edges, so I’m willing to give Dell the benefit of the doubt here. But, I was seriously thinking of picking one of these Inspiron Duos up for my wife as a Christmas present given that she can use it as a Netbook. My thinking was that maybe the fact that it is a convertible device would give her some more experience with touch, which she professes not to like.

But after watching this prototype in action, I think I’ll be waiting to see what the shipping units have to offer. I can’t see myself making a purchase based on what I’m seeing now.

The difference between 5400RPM drives and 7200RPM drives is like night and day, certainly. It makes a huge difference in load times and general performance. What I’m surprised, however (or perhaps I’ve missed it), is that there is no SSD option. Installing an SSD would make it considerably better.
