Dell Inspiron Duo Making Waves at IDF 2010

Published

on

To say people are excited about the Dell Inspiron Duo here at IDF 2010 is an understatement. For those wondering why I didn’t get t o go hands on with the Inspiron Duo, here’s why:

I had to fight my way through a crowd of journalists just to grab a few seconds of video of the Inspiron Duo. It reminded me of fighting my way through a train station to get to the ticket window in India.

I talked to a few folks here at IDF 2010 about the Inspiron Duo and the big question about it is price. If Dell charges north of $500 the consensus is that it’ll flop. At or below $500 and a lot of us think Dell will move a lot of units.

Sorry to break hearts, but I’ll bet a wad of cash that this new joy of the Win7 set will debut well north of $500. The manufacturing costs alone will assure that, unless Dell is willing to sell at a loss to establish market.

Xavier – did you notice any ports on this beauty? I’ve seen photos of the front, back and right (when facing screen) edges with only a power button showing on the right side. Perhaps there are some on the left, but it seems that it will rely on the docking station they also demoed.

Second question(s) – was it as laggy in its response as it appeared in the Youtube videos? First he couldn’t get the screen to recognize input and “spin” the radio map; then he couldn’t stream the radio station. Then it rather slowly changed programs as demoing the media capabilities…

All they demonstrated up close was the screen flipping around, no software demos. I wouldn’t base performance of the shipping product on what was shown on stage. It’s very common for us to see prototypes that aren’t functioning correctly close to ship date.

I was standing on the right side of the left side of the device and didn’t get a look at the other side to see if there were ports. If there aren’t, that’s a dumb move.
