Dell Streak Info Gets Some Clarity

Published

on

Today is the last day that you can sign up to get early access to ordering a Dell Streak, and we’re also a day where we’re seeing some clarity about the device and Dell’s plans. In a blog post titled Dell Streak Update: Where We Are, Lionel Menchaca tells us that the Dell Streak won’t be offered with a T-Mobile option (remember it’s a phone), and that Android 2.2 will come later this year. The latter bit is actually old news. We also learned today that the pricing for the Dell Streak will be $299.99 with an AT&T two year contract and $549.99 without.

Dell is claiming pre-sale interest is very high, so who here is ordering? We’d like to know.

At $300 on contract it’s tough to recommend this phone over the Captivate on AT&T. Other than a larger screen and a front facing camera (which is mostly useless since the Fring / Skype fallout) the Dell Streak doesn’t have any advantages over the line of Galaxy S phones from Samsung. While I’ve enjoyed using it for the last few weeks if the $300 subsidized price doesn’t drop AT&T won’t be selling many. Which is kind of a shame because it really is a fun and productive device to use.

That’s true, the Captivate has numerous advantages over
Dell Streak. Hummingbird faster than Snapdragon. 3D graphics capable, 720P video capable, surrond sound,
4″Super AMOLED killer screen, Android 2.1 (with 2.2 software download programing included) as soon as its available, excellent Camera with the latest & greatest
sofeware. And only $199 on 2 year contract. $99 on new accounts !?!

Is anyone really planning on using this as a phone? I just want the uber-PDA that I’ve always pined for. I don’t need a data plan, much less from AT&T. I have a Verizon Wireless Mi-Fi. But the $550 price tag for a device shipping with Android 1.6 is ridonkeylous. The key element of failure in my Archos 7 Home Tablet experiment (now sitting on my shelf in the electronics curio) was the antiquated (relatively) version of Android; that and lack of access to the Android Marketplace (which Dell I guess has fixed in this new device)…oh yeah, and the anemic processor.

But I knew what I was getting into going in. For $200, that device was worth rolling the dice on. But $550 for the chance that Android 2.2 will arrive in 2010, and having to suffer until that happens? No way.

I agree. I was hoping to pick up one of these to use as an “UberPDA” (I like that Term) and as a MIFI type device to use with the work laptop. $299.00 subsidized price is more than I am willing to pay for it. For me, the Streak is worth $199 subsidized and $299.00 unlocked.

BTW, thanks for the heads up on the Archos 7 Home Tablet. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on one. I want an Android tablet device to play with. I’ll keep waiting.

It’s really pretty good as a phone, as long as you don’t mind holding a larger device. The speaker and microphone for phone calls is on the better end of the spectrum for smartphones. At $150 on contract I believe some people might be tempted to buy one (after playing with it in a store), but if they don’t lower that subsidized price it won’t matter what anyone thinks.

Wow. Dell is shooting itself in the foot. They need to get the release date straight. All this messing around is turning me off to actually purchasing this product.
