Despite Lack of iPhone 5, Consumers Still Trading in for the iPhone 4S

The iPhone 4S is a let down for many buyers who had been hoping for a teardrop shaped, or aluminum backed iPhone 5 for months. But, when it comes to the average consumer, they may not care about a new iPhone design.

The iPhone 4S looks the same as the iPhone 4, but weighs an ounce more. Inside it has a faster dual core A5 processor, an advanced 8MP camera, new antenna and is banking on the new Siri voice control app to change how you use your iPhone.

You can see the breakdown of new iPhone 4S features and watch the iPhone 4S demo video below.

While many in the tech media are disappointed, the average consumer still appears to be excited about the iPhone 4S, despite the same old looks.

Gazelle reports that after the announcement, the company was purchasing one iPhone every 6 seconds. Between the press invite and the actual announcement the company purchased over 10,000 iPhones. This is significant, because it means that many iPhone 4S buyers are OK with the lack fo a new design.

This confirms the findings of our iPhone buyer survey, which listed listed no major cosmetic difference as being a roadblock for upgrading for 14.7% of the nearly 1,000 iPhone buyers. The biggest factors were the lack of a standout feature and price. By bringing a better camera, AirPlay wireless mirroring and Siri to the iPhone 4S, Apple delivered on features. The lack of a price jump means that Apple also answered that concern.

iPhone 4S Announced: Faster, New Antenna, Better Camera

We spoke to Jessica Mellow, who was one of the first people in line for the iPhone 4S and she had the following to say about the lack of an iPhone 5,

We’re sticking it out! We are a bit disappointed that it’s not the 5, but the specs still look great. The camera is one of the biggest things I was hoping to see improve, and I’m happy with what they produced. Either way, it’s a great phone, redesign or not, and has some really cool new features. I’d like to test out the assistant. As someone with carpal tunnel, if the voice recognition is actually good, then it’s all worth it! We were going to stick it out either way though…this is more for the experience! We’ve gone 8 days, why not 10 more?! lol :) We live blogged the whole thing. Then our batteries died, so I’m recharging now and keenen will go recharge once I return to our spot. This has been an interesting ride, to say the least!

With that in mind, where do you stand on the iPhone 4S?

Maybe today’s “letdown” will be a wake-up call for GBM. I’ve liked this site for a long time, but in the past six months it’s turned into a rumor mill more than anything else. When more headlines than not end with a question mark, you’ve got a problem.
