Disney Infinity 3.0 Release: 5 Things Buyers Need to Know

Published

on

When Disney Infinity 3.0 release day arrives this year, it’ll test a lot of what we think we know about the Toys-to-Life category. As its name suggests Disney Infinity 3.0 is the third game in a series of titles created by Avalanche that have a primary focus on physical add-ons that players drop into the game. It’s an area of gaming also dominated by Activision’s Skylanders series.

Some think that the Disney Infinity 3.0 release date will mark the beginning of the end for the toys-to-life category. It’s so product driven and such a cash hog that they think gamers will revolt and have little interest in yet another game that forces them to purchase tiny toys equipped with the same NFC wireless communication technology that the iPhone uses for its Apple Pay apps and services. Others speculate that Disney Infinity 3.0 will prove that the with a little innovation and change in gameplay the toys-to-life category can stay fresh and interesting.

Here’s what you need to know if you’re planning on making a move when Disney Infinity 3.0 release day arrives.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Release Date & Pricing

Let’s start with the Disney Infinity 3.0 release date and pricing, because they can be confusing for new comers. Disney Infinity is unlike any video game series that you likely have more experience with. It’s not enough to buy a single disc based copy of Disney Infinity 3.0 In fact, you can’t. Instead, when Disney Infinity 3.0 release date arrives you need to pick up a Starter Pack. Switching characters out in the game requires you to purchase new figures that aren’t included in the Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack. Power Disc Packs add more stuff to the experience too.

Disney Infinity 3.0 figures cost $14.99 each. Picking up new Power Disc Packs that add interesting stuff to the experience costs an additional $9.99. All of this, plus the aforementioned Starter Pack goes on sale August 30th in the United States and August 28th in Europe. Themed play sets with new bits of story start at $39.99

$64.99 gets users the Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Starter Pack on the PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and Nintendo’s Wii U. The Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Starter Pack doubles as a story in its own right, called Twilight of the Republic. Twilight of the Republic features Anakin Skywalker and Ahoska Tano heavily in its story set on the planet of Geonosis. That’s why the two figures come in the Starter Pack.

The Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack comes with a disc-based copy of the game, a base for getting figures into the game, a set piece and a web code card for use at Disney Infinity’s website. Anyone who pre-orders the Disney Infinity 3.0 Starter Pack gets Disney access to Toy Box take over, a Disney Infinity 3.0 story add-on involving Syndrome from The Incredibles.

There aren’t any digital pre-orders for Disney Infinity 3.0 available now, but they are on the way, according to Forbes. They’ll be for people who don’t already have a base.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Is & Isn’t All About Star Wars Characters

Disney Infinity 3 (4)

One of the ways Disney Infinity 3.0 has been so successful is by prioritizing some parts of its universe for each new edition. The first, covered a broad range of characters. Disney Infinity 2.0 added Marvel super-heroes to the mix. Disney Infinity 3.0 packs Star Wars figures and themes.

Rise Against the Empire and The Force Awakens are two other packs coming for Disney Infinity 3.0 players. Rise Against the Empire has Luke and Leia Skywalker. Finn and Rey are included in The Force Awakens play set

Sony’s PS4 & PS3 will get a bundle of their own, called the Star Wars Saga Bundle. That $119 package has 3 web codes, the Rise Against the Empire set piece, Twilight of the Republic set Piece, a base, the game itself plus Ahsoka, Anakin, Luke, Princess Leia and Boba Fett.

Yoda, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Darh Vader, Darth Maul, Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, Sabine Wren and Zeb Orrelios are available as separate purchases.

Anyone who purchases all the characters will unlock the Keyblade, a weapon from another Disney property, Kingdom Hearts.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Power Disc Pack Changes

Disney Infinity Power Packs were sort of like gambling in years past. Purchasing one was like taking a leap of faith. Disney Infinity 3.0 Power Packs are different in that users see what their theme is before they commit to purchasing it.

Disney Infinity 3.0 has five confirmed sets of Power Disc Packs coming over the life of Disney Infinity 3.0. One is based on Tomorrowland, the movie and themed area in Disney World. Rise Against the Empire and Twilight of the Republic have their own Power Disc Packs coming too. The Good Dinosaur and Zootopia finish out that list.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Combat & Toy Box Changes

Disney Infinity 3 (5)

Combat upgrades had to be a focus for Disney Infinity 3.0. Simply put, no one is willing to do the same thing three times in a row in the same exact manner that they did them.

Every Star Wars character has a lightsaber and those are in the game. The combat system is reworked and more interesting. It combines combos with weapon use for easy advantages. Special attacks are back too. The Force can be used to propel enemies across levels.

Navigating the Toy Box requires a trip to the Toy Box Hub, which has gotten a themed-visual upgrade. Different areas have different architecture. Users can create their own music or loop in livestreams from radio Disney. Worlds can be changed depending on time of day or season. There’s a Theme Transformer for cool alterations on toys and extras too. Farming can earn you extras and a Disney sidekick too.
