Downgrade to iOS 9.2 No Longer Possible

Published

on

If you want to downgrade to iOS 9.2 on your iPhone or iPad, you unfortunately can no longer do so, as Apple has closed the signing window for iOS 9.2.

When iOS 9.2.1 was released last month, users who updated to that newer version could downgrade their devices back down to iOS 9.2 using iTunes. Technically, Apple doesn’t officially allow you to downgrade your iPhone or iPad, but the company leaves a 1-2 week window open to do so if need be.

Downgrading can be great if you’re having problems with the latest update and want to go back down a version. Jailbreakers have also used that opportunity to downgrade if that newer version isn’t jailbreakable, but the older one is.

While iOS 9.2 nor iOS 9.2.1 are jailbroken currently, it does pose a problem if an iOS 9.2 jailbreak releases in the future, but not an iOS 9.2.1 jailbreak, which could be the case, since iOS 9.2.1 included a handful of crucial security fixes.

What’s important to note right now is that the signing status for iOS 9.2 is currently only being applied to a few devices, including the iPad 2, iPad 3, and the iPhone 4s, while all the other devices are still appearing as being signed.

We’re not sure if this is just an issue with the website needing to be refreshed and hasn’t quite updated fully yet, or if Apple actually did just stop signing iOS 9.2 for just a few devices.

In any case, Pangu recently mentioned that if you’re aren’t jailbroken, it might actually be a good idea to update and stay on iOS 9.2.1 anyway, since it comes with important security fixes. Pangu still hasn’t mentioned anything about a jailbreak, but their advice does make us wonder if we’ll be seeing an iOS 9.2.1 jailbreak at some point soon.

With that said, if you’re on a new version of iOS that can’t be jailbroken right now, it may not hurt to update to iOS 9.2.1 and stay there, simply for the improved security.

There’s still no news on when a new jailbreak will release. An iOS 9.2 jailbreak has been rumored for the last few weeks, but we have yet to see anything come from that. It’s possible that TaiG or Pangu is waiting until iOS 9.3 officially releases before releasing a new jailbreak, but we’re not sure what they have up their sleeves.

With that said, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens, but for now, one thing we do know is that if you updated to iOS 9.2.1, it looks like you’re stuck there permanently.

Activator

One of the most popular jailbreak tweaks of all time is Activator, and it's easy to see why. Activator allows you to set up automations as well as shortcuts for all sorts of different actions, like automatically turning on your alarms for the next day and even changing songs using the volume buttons.

This is especially true now that Activator works on iOS 10, so you can combine it with everything that Apple added to iOS 10 and iOS 10.2.

AppDrawer

One of the best features of Android is the app drawer, where all of your installed apps appear when you bring it up. Something like this is awesome, since you don't have to have all of your apps on the home screen, and now the feature is on iOS through Cydia thanks to AppDrawer.

Browser Changer

Do you use a web browser on your iPhone other than Safari? Then it might be nice to actually change iOS's default browser to your preferred one using Browser Changer. This means that any links from other apps will now open in the web browser of your choice and not just default to Safari.

Bytafont 3

iOS 9 added a new San Francisco font that is still in iOS 10. If you're not a huge fan of it, you can use Bytafont 3 to change the font to whatever you want. The possibilities are endless here.

DeleteForever

Not a big fan of the Recently Deleted folder in the Photos app? While there isn't an iOS 10 Cydia tweak to get rid of the folder, you can at least bypass it altogether when deleting a photo.

DeleteForever will allow you to permanently delete photos with one swoop, rather than deleting a photo and then having to delete it again from the Recently Deleted folder.
