Droid Bionic Jelly Bean Android 4.1 Update Still Looms

Published

on

The Motorola Droid Bionic Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, which Motorola promised to users of the former flagship many months ago, could be next in line to receive the software from Motorola and Verizon as the Droid 4 became the latest phone listed on Motorola’s upgrade page to see its Android 4.1 update approved for roll out.

Over the past several weeks, Motorola has been crossing off names on its Android 4.1 Jelly Bean upgrade list. A short time ago, the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX received their updates to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and today, it became apparent that the Motorola Droid 4, a device that was released along with the Droid RAZR MAXX many months ago, will soon be getting its upgrade to Android 4.1.

Once the Droid 4 Jelly Bean update rolls out, only two planned Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates will remain on Verizon’s list of software updates that are set to go out.

One of those updates is for the Verizon version of the Motorola Xoom tablet. The other planned update is for the Motorola Droid Bionic which endured a messy upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and which was promised Android 4.1 Jelly Bean many months ago.

In 2012, Google bought Motorola which led to leadership changes at Motorola. The first evidence of this surfaced at the Droid RAZR HD launch event when Motorola announced a new trade-in program wherein if it didn’t deliver Jelly Bean to a phone, it would give owners a $100 rebate towards another device. Since then, the company has also outfitted its Android upgrade page with an easier to navigate user interface where it keeps track of the different devices and their updates.

Since last year, the Droid Bionic has been listed as getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and it continues to show a promising “This device will be upgraded Jelly Bean (Android 4.1)” even as Motorola updates the page.

This is a fantastic sign for owners of the device as it means that Motorola is likely hard at work on the update. It also means that an update is likely still in the cards. And now, with the Motorola Droid 4 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update on its way to owners, the Droid Bionic could be the next former flagship, and last Motorola flagship device to receive the upgrade from Verizon.

Jelly Bean update broke PDANet’s hot-spot and bluetooth sharing ability. Razr owners are pissed at Verizon.

You mean someone is still using the abortion of a phone called the Bionic? That phone drove me to the iPhone until I came to my senses with a Droid Razr Maxx HD. This Razr owner is not pissed at Verizon, either. I’m an adult.

You only chose the iPhone because you didn’t have the skills to manage the Bionic which still is a great phone with just as many features as the Razr.

Yes someone is still using the Bionic and outside the OS update debacles quite happily I might add. Nary an issue…works great.

I am still using the bionic. It is a great phone and can still compete with the best of them. Is there really much difference in a 1.0ghz, 1.2ghz or 1.5ghz phone that is truely noticable with the same amount of RAM? I don’t think we will see any major diffrences until we go to quad cores and double the ram. So I will hold on to my bionic for now until I see a a device that really Wows me. :)

I completely agree with you. I love my Bionic. Something will have to knock my socks off for me to go to another phone and nothing has done that yet and I don’t see that happening soon.

I recently had my Razr Maxx updated to Jelly Bean, and lost wifi to my home network, while my wifes exact same phone which has NOT been updated connects to the home wifi without hesitation——what gives?

My Bionic is my first Android device after dumping AT&T and the iPhone 3G S. Yes, there have been some issues, but overall I’m very satisfied. My friends with the Razr Maxx on JB right now are singing its praises.

I’ll likely go with another Moto Android when I get a new device.

Is there another wifi tether besides FoxFi that will work on Jelly Bean? Love my Bionic but also can’t live without FoxFi.

I love my Bionic. I have been very happy with it, especially after ICS. It can still compete with the new phones out there.

I love my Bionic. Currently running Cyanogen Mod 10.1 Jelly Bean 4.2.2. Smooth with no bloat and no issues in my daily usage.
