Droid RAZR & Droid RAZR MAXX Ice Cream Sandwich Bug Fix Update on Track for August

Published

on

The Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX Ice Cream Sandwich bug fix update, which we originally told you would hopefully arrive in August, appears to be on track for a release during that month.

A source has told us that Verizon is still working on the update for both devices and that it should be out before the end of August, and quite possibly, if all goes well, sooner than that.

Of course, this is a software update for an Android device and it’s coming from Verizon so it’s possible that we could see that potential roll out window change in the future. However, as of right now, this is what Verizon is supposedly aiming for as far as an Ice Cream Sandwich bug fix update is concerned.

The update has been in the works since shortly after Verizon rolled out the Ice Cream Sandwich update to Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX owners at the end of June.

A bug fix update for the Droid RAZR is still on track for August.

Those updates brought a host of issues to device owners including stability issues, keyboard problems, problems with My Gallery, and of course, battery life issues that seem to come up every time a major Android update is released.

Those are just a taste of the issues plaguing these devices.

While we wait for the bug fix update to arrive, owners can try clearing the cache on the Droid RAZR or Droid RAZR MAXX in order to try and solve some of the issues. We’ve heard from several people who have seen noticeable improvement after performing the fix.

Other have said that clearing the cache worked at first, helping to stabilize the device, but that the issues returned shortly afterward leaving the phone in a problematic state that might only be fixed with a bug fix update.

The fact that the Motorola Droid RAZR Ice Cream Sandwich updates are plagued with bugs isn’t surprising. It’s clear that both Motorola and Verizon came down to the wire trying to meet Motorola’s imposed Q2 deadline for the update and because of that, owners are paying the price.

Hopefully, we see some relief soon and Verizon is able to get this software out in early August.

We’ll let you know when we hear more.

I got the update… I’m 2000 miles from home in Cali and the update did not install itself properly and now it will not get passed the start up screen. I had similiar issues as others with the phone acting like a 3 year old with a mind of it’s own along with a lack of signal. However, the WI-FI worked. I also noticed the phone got extremely hot. Hotter than I ever felt it before. Then it just went back from worse. and now it’s on an infinite loop. I took it to a store, as I am traveling without phone, they informed me there has been no report issues (although I call them out) and they are overnighting me a phone. So I’m without a phone for at least a day.

To say I am not happy about the update would be an understatement.
I hope this does not occur to anyone else….

I got the update last week and have had no stability problems and no bugs. Did they fix something or am I just lucky?

I got the update on July 12th and lost my 4G signal completely. It never returned after several cache clearings and soft and hard resets. Finally, Verizon just replaced the phone and it’s working as it should!

This ICS update has been an absolute mess for me. I’ve spent hours with well-meaning but uninformed Verizon tech support folks, and, even after sending me a new phone (which made no difference) the problems remain.

Here’s one for those of you who may think there are no problems with the update: Try setting your alarm with a voice command. I use that all the time when I’m driving, since using digital devices while driving is illegal in my state. It’s very easy to hold down the “magnifying glass” icon for a couple seconds and then issue a voice command to set the alarm. If you then look at the alarm screen, everything seems to be in order — but when the alarm time arrives it does not go off. I’ve tried it with ICS Razrs at Verizon stores, and they all do the same thing. Moto phones that still have Gingerbread work fine, just as my MAXX did before the ICS update.

Another problem, which I’ve also verified with additional Razrs at Verizon stores, is the inability to view various videos that worked fine with Gingerbread. I subscribe to web sites with daily financial market updates in video format, and made sure the Razr would view them before I bought it. Now it doesn’t, and often the browser becomes flaky and needs to be shut down after I attempt to view them. No problems with my laptop, iPad, or Moto phones still running Gingerbread at the Verizon store.

Oh, and the replacement phone they sent me during this process has a cheap-sounding “creak” noise when I grip the phone by the edges, apparently due to the plastic surround piece not fitting very well.

Either Verizon and Moto did not test this software very well, or they released it knowing perfectly well that it was buggy (which is my guess). Either way, this really sucks. I have wasted many hours working with them on this, as well as reinstalling everything and restoring countless settings on alll my apps, icon arrangements, etc.

I am also experiencing the shorter run time on a full charge, and occasionally the phone is quite hot for no apparent reason.

If the phone had been like this when I first got it, I would have returned it immediately. From my perspective, it is broken and this needs to be resolved immediately — with a refund if necessary.

I’ve never had an iPhone, but they are looking better all the time. This is absolutely pathetic, and I’m fed up.
