DROID Turbo 2 Android 6.0 Marshmallow Update Continues

Published

on

Verizon Wireless and Motorola are finally, maybe, ready to deliver the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow software update for the DROID Turbo 2. Way back in December we saw reports that it was coming, then on February 12th Verizon posted then removed the update, which happened again in March. This week though, Motorola’s own staff confirmed the DROID Turbo 2 Android 6.0 Marshmallow update is here.

In October Motorola surprised many and announced the shatter-proof and rugged DROID Turbo 2 for Verizon Wireless and made it available two days later. Now that we’ve seen nearly all recent Moto X and G smartphones receive Android 6.0, as well as most LG, HTC and Samsung devices, Motorola and Verizon are moving forward to their partnered device.

The December, February and March sightings were soak tests, leaks, or were delayed for problems. Then the update arrived early for some Verizon employees who were using the DROID Turbo 2. However, now near the end of April it’s officially official. Confirmed by both Motorola and Verizon support pages.

Droid Turbo 2 Impressions - 8

It has been a long time coming loaded with false promises, release dates that were never met, soak tests that took three or four months rather than 48 hours and more. For whatever reason Verizon and Motorola had a tough time with this, and some users received it in March, but most didn’t. Whatever the reasons were, it doesn’t matter now because on April 26th it was finally announced and started rolling out.

The DROID Turbo 2 is Motorola and Verizon’s latest hard-hitting flagship smartphone. Featuring powerful top-tier specs, a shatter-proof display, two-day battery life, and a pretty good camera. However, it was released right around the time Marshmallow was announced, but running the year old Android 5.1 Lollipop release.

On February 12 Verizon posted the DROID Turbo 2 Android 6.0 update changelog, then removed it from their website. Now it’s back, and the March 1st release date has been changed to April 26th. So get ready DROID Turbo owners.

Read: Android 6.0 vs Android 5.1 Lollipop: What’s New

Above is a detailed breakdown of almost everything that’s new and different with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Being a Motorola smartphone it runs nearly stock Android, with a few small changes. Things may look the same at first glance, but Android will be better, faster and more secure after this update.

Droid Turbo 2 Impressions - 3

From improved security, performance, battery life with Doze, Google Now on Tap and more. This update will bring a lot of much needed improvements as well as a few bug fixes for Turbo 2 owners. Battery life was already great, but Doze will make it better. The permission controls will keep devices more safe, and Motorola also has some changes in there too. We’re hoping the latest April security patch is included, but can’t confirm that yet. Those who received earlier Marshmallow builds, will still get this over the air update, as it has additional fixes and improvements.

The changelog states that the “ambient display” mode has been removed, and the phone will default to stock Moto Display technology, which many loved on the DROID Turbo or Moto X. There is also Attentive Display settings, more options in Moto Assist, likely some bloatware removed, and other small bug fixes that we aren’t seeing. For now we don’t have too many details, but so far all Moto X owners are enjoying the latest update, and the same great experience should roll-over for the Moto DROID Turbo 2. Expect that battery to last longer than ever before (after a few days to adjust to the update) and an overall better smartphone experience. We’re also hearing the problems from the first update like WiFi bugs, battery drain, text message failures and more have been ironed out. It has been a rough road for DROID Turbo 2 owners, but a fix is finally here.

Users can head into settings > about phone > and manually check for updates starting late right now. That or simply wait for the over the air update notification to hit the phone. It should arrive as of April 27th, but could take a few days to arrive for all users. We’d suggest using a WiFi connection and having at least 50% battery life before proceeding. Once the update arrives drop a comment below with any potential problems, or how the update is running for you.

2/17 TODAY Where’s my marshmallow. This is really ridiculous to take this long to receive something that’s pushing 6 months old. Nothing on Droid Turbo 2

On the Turbo 2. Google has confirmed, Motorola has confirmed, Verizon seems to be in the dark as usual. I thought Verizon was supposed to be the premier cell phone carrier. I think not. I had a LG4
with Sprint that received this update OTA about 2 and a half months ago. VERIZON GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER!!!!!

Verizon pulled it within hours of when it was initially released. No real reason was given as to why.

Got mine on the 25th – it’s great – although Doze mode must be completely automatic because there is absolutely no setting called “Doze” anywhere. A few settings menus have been re-arranged, compacted, etc. The Phone is fantastically updated now to bigger in-call buttons instead of those stuuuupid tiny buttons way up high (used to have to gingerly reach for the dial-pad or speaker phone for those options while driving or my oyhter hand while holding the phone? Now, no more, those buttons are YUGE and I can operate a phone call with ONE hand – right OR left.

A lot faster, 50% better battery

Looks like if you get the failed download on the second update that you will have to wait for the phone to get the notice of update on its own. I have tried several of the things suggested and it still says the download failed and the device is up to date. My email only syncs once a day and not constant like before the 1st update.

  49. George Golden

    03/14/2016 at 11:03 am

HEY GUYS, I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH VERIZON AND FOUND THAT THEY PULLED THE UPDATE AND EVERYONE THAT WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF UPDATING ON THE 11TH GOT SCREWED TIL THEY RELEASE IT AGAIN. DEPENDING ON HOW FAR IT GOT, YOU CAN DO A FACTORY RESET AND MIGHT FIX ANY ISSUES. NO DATE ON WHEN THEY WILL PUSH IT BACK OUT AS OF 3/14/2016 @ 2:00 PM EST!

    • Tyler

      03/14/2016 at 11:11 am

The factory reset does no good. It just deletes all of your stuff. Motorola had me do one when I called them and my phone has been doing all kinds of crazy stuff since the 2nd half of the update failed including a screen glitch where a line of the pixels shifts up for a while then goes away

    • Rick Rossi

      03/23/2016 at 4:29 pm

Thank you for that! I was wondering why my Turbo 2 hasn’t updated. After reading all the comments, I’m actually glad it didn’t. Anyway, thanks.

I got marshmallow on my phone (DROID TURBO 2)and it has been a complete disaster. I have a stupid green line that appears when ever it wants AND my phone constantly reboots about 20 times a day. Verizon is no help except for acknowledging that this is being reported by other users and they are working on the problem. When it is running it is great, but the green line and my phone constantly rebooting is a big pain in the ass! Thanks for nothing , I’d rather have a flip phone.

        05/08/2016 at 4:57 am

mine has been soooooo slow. so annoyed. but its able to get a full charge (only over night tho which is super annoying if it accidentally becomes disconnected from the charger while sleeping).

But i can get a full charged if i put it into safe mode (hold the lock button til the option to power off comes up. then press and hold power off to be prompted if you want to put it into safe mode)

Then if you airplane it in safe mode and charge it, you should be able to get a full charge. but again it takes like all night.

My hair goes gray waiting on updates from this Lenovo owned Moto. Not surprising, Lenovo sucks. I can’t believe this brand new phone doesn’t have the version of Android that the nearly three year old phone it replaced had. Dont hold your breath. They fake it out about 3 times before the update happens eight months later.

      03/31/2016 at 8:50 am

Yeah, as stated above you have to download the Verizon software updater but make sure to grab the Motorola. Update through your pc (and yes, Windows 10 will do it). Verizon pulled it again, which is why the second download is failing. So glad it’s my husband’s phone and not mine.

  58. Jason

    05/01/2016 at 1:59 pm

What a freaking nightmare. DO NOT accept the OS update if you’re using a Motorola Droid Turbo2 ad have a comcast email account. I did the update, every 6 hours, the OS completely re-downloads every email in my account, every day. The result?…I hit 75% of my data usage by day 3 of my billing cycle. It’s now a week into it, Verizon has no clue what the OS issue is and I’m at 90% of my plan facing data overages. Verizon’s billing department’s solution, ” let’s look at better plan options for you”. Are you effn serious?? Eff you. My suggestion…DO NOT update to the new Marshmallow OS update if you have a Motorola Droid Turbo2. What for them to fix the bugs

I’m trying to find a way to revert mine back to Lollipop version until they fix it. WiFi issues now and Turbo Charge is gone, not to mention takes it about 7 hours or overnight to fully charge now. What a joke. I agree I would not Update to the new os.

Do NOT update if you haven’t already…my droid turbo 2, which was perfectly fine prior to the update, deleted all of my photos that I had in folders on my phone and restarts at least once a day…battery also goes quicker now…terrible idea to update…

Marshmallow killed my droid 2. Battery dies while plugged in. Tech support has me do several things to the phone. Nothing worked. His solution, unplug it and try again. Was greatest phone I ever had. Now wish i had a flip phone.

Replaced my dead razor with a Maxx 2 at the Costco kiosk. Loved the two days on a charge. Up popped the Marshmellow update which was uneventful. Within a week the phone was discharging on the charger. The Costco Verizon rep tried the same suggested fixes I had tried and finally said the phone needed replacement. I turned in everything in the original package and Costco reissued everything. Although the rep claimed he had not had any returns on the Turbo and Maxx 2 over this issue he pointedly requested I not upgrade when prompted (which happens constantly) till something definitive comes up on customer service notifications.
