Fix for Assassin’s Creed Unity Problems Arrives, Stumbles

Developer Ubisoft seemed like it was on the cusp of fixing those Assassin’s Creed Unity problems once and for all, that was until a glitch related to the update for the Xbox One forced some users to download the entire digital version of the game over again.

By all accounts, Update 4 for Assassin’s Creed Unity seems like it should fix all of the problems users have had this past month. In a post about the update last night Ubisoft revealed that it delayed Monday’s patch until yesterday so that it could rebuild the map of Paris, France that users play around in. Since launch users have reported being stuck on certain buildings or trapped within walls.

Fixes are also included for frame rate loss, players loosing their progress, navigation issues, lock picking issues and online connectivity.

Because of the rebuilt Paris map, this patch to address Assassin’s Creed Unity problems was always going to be big. Originally, Ubisoft estimated it would come in at about 6.7GB. That’s a pretty big update by any standard. What some users on Microsoft’s Xbox One console got was a 40GB download that took hours to finish. This issue only affected the version for Xbox One users it seems; PS4 users didn’t report having to download a hefty patch.

Chances are that users who have the Xbox One’s low power mode enabled — and it is by default — will notice their games have updated overnight. It’s still touch and go for those who have low power mode turned off or didn’t have an internet connection last night. Ubisoft indicated it was working with Microsoft to address the huge 40GB patch issue. That portion of the post at the Live Blog that Ubisoft is using to track Assassin’s Creed Unity problems and get word out about the fixes doesn’t say if they actually managed to work out the issue. Ubisoft did note a single work around that involved disc-based owners of Assassin’s Creed Unity uninstalling the entire game and then installing it again. The procedure shouldn’t result in any lost saves and leaves users just download Update 4.

Ubisoft says it has plans to release this patch to address Assassin’s Creed Unity problems on the PC in the coming days. The developer has set a deadline of the end of the week but given no actual release date.

Ironically, Assassin’s Creed Unity is less than 10 days from its most important landmark yet. The game arrived on store shelves for the Xbox One, PS4 and PC earlier this year, but Microsoft also included the console in its 2014 holiday Xbox One bundles. Today, the smartest way to purchase an Xbox One is for $349 without a Kinect 2 sensor and a copy of Assassin’s Creed Unity or for $449 with a Kinect 2 sensor and a copy of Assassin’s Creed Unity. Thousands of new Xbox One owners are going to unwrap the console on Christmas. If Assassin’s Creed Unity isn’t correctly working by then Ubisoft may be looking at a public relations problem that could effect later games in the series, like next year’s Assassin’s Creed Victory.

To be fair, this is a problem even for users who have an Xbox One already without the game. Microsoft included Assassin’s Creed Unity among other discounts in its Countdown to 2015 deals this week. Through the deal a digital version of Assassin’s Creed Unity is $49.97. For comparison, a new copy of the game costs $59.99.

Earlier this year Ubisoft announced that it would give away Assassin’s Creed Unity’s upcoming Dead Kings DLC to everyone who purchased the game. We still don’t have a release date for that DLC. We also don’t know when users who purchased the Assassin’s Creed Unity Season pass will get their free game.
