I have installed Windows 7 RC on my HP 2710p and it works like a charm out of my expectation. My laptop now starts up and shutdown much faster than it did with Vista. Everything is snappier than before. Aero, new theme sets and many other UI features are cool. Hereafter is the procedure and what I had to do with to work around issues.<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" />
The installation went fine.Uponcompleting, I saw tons of devices listed as unknown inthe devicemanager. Windows update then reminds me to update the following drivers:
    - Gigabit LAN
    - Synaptics Pointing devices
    - Intel Display
    - Fingerprint scanner
    After updating:
    - Gigabit LAN works
    - The trackstick is easier to navigte
    - The Fingerprint feature works right away and i can register to logon on (very quickly and accurately not just like thesoftware came with HP).
    - Display works well butcan not rotate automatically when I converted to slate mode, the rotationpush button(the hole locatesby the side of the display)does not work.
    - The Quick launch button does not work,
    - Volume, speaker, monitor out control (touch) does not work too,
I then install the vistaHP Quick launch buttons driverSP40139 after extractingfile SP40139.exe (can not run directly !) with WinRAR.Afterthispatch:
    - Rotation works well when I change to slate mode,
-Quick launch button works (and rotation push button, of course),
    - Volume, speaker, monitor out control (touch)work,

One thing that takes up much of my time to make me feelhappynowis to fine tunethe display. At default settings, the display is not as clear as it did in Vista: It washes out and the text looks pale. I have to adjust the screen gamma and fine tune cleartype (this utility now includes as a feature of the OS) to make text darker and easier to read.
Most of my beloved applicationswork :
    - Office 2007 (of course)
    - Mindjet MindManager 8
    - InkSeine
    - PDF Annotator
    - Visual Studio 2005
    - VMWare workstation 6
    - WinRAR
    - NotePad++
    - Internet download manager
    - Adobe Reader 9.0
Applicationscould not install (even though I have tried to start them in Vista compatibility mode):
    - Roboform
    - SaveAsPDF
    Whatâ??s left:
All features I need now work well but there are still three unknown devices in Other Devices group in Device Manager:
    - PCI serial port
    - PCI simple communication controller
    - Unknown device ???
After searching driver downloads from HP website, I suspected the PCI communication controller having something to do with the Intel AMT LMS-SOL and AMT MEI Driver. I tried to setup them in Vista compatibility mode (after extracting with WinRAR) but failed.

The weirdest thing is the battery life: under vista, in Power saver mode, my battery can last at least 2.5 hours with Aero on, Bluetooth and Wifi on. Now under Windows 7 it can last only 1.45 hours with Bluetooth and Wifi off. I have tried to turn off Aero but the situation seems not being improved much.

Some experience I would like to share.

Inking is great and pressure sensitivity too. You won't be regret installing Windows 7. It's my main OS now !

    Quang,
Try this. Use winrar to extract all the HP drivers into their respective folders. Put the individual folders into a single folder and name it HP Drivers - or whatever you want to name it. Go into device manager and use the update driver feature. Direct it to your HP Drivers main folder and let it search the folder for the drivers it is looking for. 9 out of 10 times that trick works for me.
    Hope that helps.

Thanks DaveTN, I will definitely try your suggestion. Actually the left unknown devices do not affect the HP performance on Windows 7.

    Thanks again,

    Quang,

Thank Yon for the detailed writeup. Could you please elaborate on the Quick Lanch button installation? I have extracted SP40139 into a folder but cannot get it to install. I have tried update. the drivers of my existing device manager entry, changing setup.exe to vista compatible mode, tried extracting data1.cab and data2.cab (failed)

    any tips?
    Thanks.

    HI,

I did a clean install of Windows 7 RC on my 2710p and I can't get the fingerprint reader to work. What HP management software did you install to get this to work. I tried downloading all of the HP Security software files from their support site but they didn't work. Is there something I am missing or is there something special I need to do with Windows 7 to use the fingerprint reader without any HP software installed. I do have the latest Authentec driver for the reader. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi techgeek32,

Should i remember well, i was prompted to update FingerPrint driver by Autoupdate right after finished installation of Windows 7. I then downloaded, upgraded and the fingerprint scanner worked without any intervention. I didn't need any HD management software for doing this !

    Just for your information.

    Hi

Just to add David is correct the two missing drivers are indeed the Intel AMT

Download the vista AMT drivers from
    http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...;swEnvOID=2098

Hopefully that link is pasted correctly

Then install winRar this will allow you too right click each of the files and choose extract to (choose a location on your drive)

Then use device manager and install driver but choose the folder you extracted too W7 will find the driver and install do this for both of the devices.. (i choose scan subfolders as well when pointing to the driver files so W7 scanned both folders and choose the correct driver) do it for both missing devices and all is good, no missing device drivers..

All is good, i really like w7 on this laptop everything works great (and it does seem slightly faster than Vista)

    Cheers

    Chris
