So I was having an argument with someone about Vista handwriting recognition. I said for my purposes I've found it to be near 99% accurate, and he said that was a load of bull; handwriting recognition is in it's infancy, just like speech recognition, and nothing that accurate exists on the market today.

So to put him in his place I decided to put the recognition engine to the test. I took a laptop that is not a tablet (so it has no training) andwrote a message with the track pad. Also, I decided not to correct any mistakes (since I was in the car when I wrote this, any bump would cause my finger to glide across the trackpad unintentionally.)

    So, here are the results:

If you'll notice, given horrible track pad handwriting with absolutely zero training, the engine managed to recognize everything perfectly. I'm particularly impressed with how it recognized "uninformed" and "technologies". As I was writing thoseI thought to myself "there's no way that's going to come out right" but to my astonishment and complete joy they did.

Yeah I'm also really impressed with the accuracy of handwriting recognition in Vista. I have pretty horrible handwriting (lots of people struggle to interpret my writing), but Vista is quite good atÂÂ*recognizing it. It would probably be near perfect with some training, but since english isn't my native language I don't actually use handwriting recognition much.

I think the ultimate test would to hand a tablet over to one of my professors. He wrote comments on my group's paper, and between four human minds we couldn't understand any of the words. I'm eager to find out if vista can decipher his handwriting.

i did a similar test with a few of my friends except it was with my x61t, 2 were left handed, and 2 were right handed. the tablet was trained to my own handwriting and no training to the others and no corrections as well. and i was impressed as well. They all printed their sentences, and i should have asked them to also use script as well. Out of all 4 of them writing a 5 word sentence "hello my name is ______" . the handwriting recognition was 90%

I think its hard to see the difference between script and print, if not tested for. In my opinion there is more variation with print than there is with script. and even though that my test concluded a 90% that is still very good at picking up printed words.

I've been jumping back and forth between Vista and XP on my Q1. But despite the fact that XP responds so much more quickly and despite that the wireless projector's proprietary software i use is really flaky on vista, it is this one thing (TIP) that keeps me coming back to vista. Just wish now I hadn't waisted the cash on XP tablet.

Since day one, I have had incredible handwriting recognition with Vista. I can't say I've tested it, but it is over 95 percent accurate, I'm sure. And I have the "terrible" passive digitizer HP TX1000.

Vista Handwriting Recognition gets better if you train it at least few times. But if you don't do it, it still learns from your handwriting.
