Fujitsu To Announce Improved Color e-Paper Displays
Fujitsu Laboratories is set to announce improved color e-Paper displays at the Fujitsu Forum exhibition in Tokyo May 13-14. Supposedly these displays are quite a bit brighter (up to 1/3rd brighter with a 7:1 contrast ratio). More importantly Fujitsu is saying that new driver technology will allow the screens to redraw in 0.7 seconds.
The improvement in color and contrast is due to a new liquid crystal material that has better reflective capabilities.

I was wondering which technology they’re developing, fortunately the press release at the link explains. It’s reflective cholesteric LCD, which is the type of technology that Kent Displays has been working on and shows up (in rather different form) in the Boogie Board.
Fujitsu ePaper:
Contrast ratio: 7:1
Reflectivity (presumably @ white): 33%
Refresh: 0.7 seconds
E Ink Vizplex (the usual ebook electrophoretic display):
Contrast ratio: 7:1
Reflectivity: 40%
Refresh: 740 milliseconds
Newsprint
Contrast ratio: about 10:1
Reflectivity: 62-65%
