15 Things to Know About the Samsung Galaxy Lollipop Update

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Android 5.0 Lollipop update continues to make substantial progress in the United States and around the world, so much progress in fact, that it can be hard to follow. Today, we want to make things a bit easier for those of you trying to follow along as we present some of the most important details you need to know, this week, about the Galaxy Lollipop update for key devices like the Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 4.

In December, Samsung started rolling out its first Galaxy Android 5.0 Lollipop update. Unsurprisingly, that update landed for the Samsung Galaxy S5 which, at the time, was the company’s flagship smartphone.

As we’ve pushed away from that initial release, Samsung’s made considerable progress with its Galaxy S5 Lollipop release and the Lollipop releases for several other top devices including the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, Galaxy S4, and more. In the past 10 days alone we’ve seen the company’s updates take huge strides toward completion. There is, however, still a long way to go before the job is done.

Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Update Review - 4

This week was a busy one for Samsung and its various Android 5.0 Lollipop releases. We saw new updates emerge in the United States, we saw new updates emerge in the international community, and we saw some new details about upcoming releases arrive for users that remain on Google’s aging Android 4.4 KitKat update.

With all of that in mind, here we take a look at some of the most important things you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy Lollipop update and its release as we push deeper into the month of April. If you haven’t been keeping up, this will catch you up to speed.

AT&T Galaxy S5 Lollipop Update Now Available

After a bit of a wait, the AT&T Galaxy S5 Android 5.0 Lollipop update is finally rolling out to users bringing new features, enhancements and more to the former flagship smartphone.

AT&T’s Galaxy S5 Lollipop update is huge, 1.4GB to be exact which means that a Wi-Fi connection is required to download and install the new software. The process can take upwards of 30 minutes, depending on connection speed. AT&T Galaxy S5 users will also need a substantial amount of free space available in order to get the update moving.

If you own an AT&T Galaxy S5, you’ll want to check for the update in your settings. Remember though, you can only check for AT&T firmware updates once per day. Horrible, we know, but that’s the way it goes.

Those of you with the U.S. Cellular Galaxy S5 can now check for the update in the device’s settings or attempt to skip the OTA through the Samsung Kies PC companion application. The OTA process should take several days to complete so those that don’t go through Samsung Kies will want to remain patient as U.S. Cellular works to get the update out to everyone.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Lollipop Update Still MIA for US Carriers

While we don’t have any new details, it’s important to note that the arrival of these two updates (AT&T and U.S. Cellular) means that there are now two Galaxy S5 Lollipop updates left to go in the United States.

Cricket Wireless and MetroPCS haven’t announced any Galaxy S5 Lollipop update details though now that the update is available on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, Verizon, and C Spire, we have to imagine that these roll outs will be coming soon. Those of you with these devices will want to keep an eye out for them in the month of April.

New Galaxy S5 Lollipop Release Details Confirmed

Earlier this week, Canadian carrier Rogers confirmed plans to release its Galaxy S5 Active Lollipop update in the near future. Samsung continues to make substantial progress with its Galaxy S5 Lollipop release and it’s clear that it has big plans for April and beyond. We know this because new Galaxy S5 Lollipop updates continue to pop up on a regular basis including an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for major Japanese carrier, KDDI. Those of you on international carriers will want to keep your eyes peeled now that the Galaxy S5 Lollipop release is finally picking up steam.

Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop Update Hits US

Earlier this week, AT&T started rolling out its Galaxy S4 Lollipop update, the first US carrier to do so.

As expected, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Lollipop update for the United States is a big one, checking in at close to 1GB in size, which means that AT&T users are required to download it over a Wi-Fi connection. The process can take up to an hour to complete, depending on network speed.

Ma Bell’s version of the Galaxy S4 Lollipop update will supply users of the aging former flagship with several notable changes including Material Design, battery saving features and the removal of Code Scanner, Browser Bar and Softcard applications.

With Galaxy Android 5.0 problems swirling, we advise you to seek out feedback before installing the software on your phone, especially if your Galaxy S4 is holding up nicely on Android 4.4 KitKat.

Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Impressions

The Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update is rolling out and we recently took a look at its performance. If you own a Galaxy Note 4 on Verizon and you’re on the fence about Android 5.0 Lollipop, these impressions are a great place to start.

T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Update Making Progress

Earlier this week, T-Mobile updated its Android release page to reflect a big change for its Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update.

The T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update has now moved from the “Manufacturer Development” phase to internal testing at T-Mobile which means that it should only be a matter of time before the update rolls out to users across the country.

The Note 4 apps work great on Android 5.0 Lollipop and the home screen remained unchanged.

T-Mobile hasn’t said how long the internal testing process will take which means that the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop release date is still extremely unpredictable. It could take place tomorrow or it could take place weeks from now. Everything is dependent on the testing process. That said, this is a big step for one of the remaining Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop updates in the United States.

Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop Update Poised for Big Push

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop is poised for a big push outside of the United States as well.

After two months of silence, we’re finally starting to see international carriers talk about the Galaxy Note 4 Lollipop update. This week, Vodafone Australia confirmed a Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update. The carrier says that testing is in progress which could mean that a release is close. Again, testing can be unpredictable.

This is a big development for those in Australia and for those still on Android 4.4 KitKat. It means that carriers finally have the software in for testing which means that we should finally start to see a big push for the company’s flagship smartphone.

Sprint Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop Update Now Available

This week, Sprint started rolling out its version of the Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop update.

The carrier’s new update falls in line with its early Galaxy Lollipop updates in that they bring some major changes to the two devices. Included in the updates are changes to the look and feel of the operating system thanks to Google’s new Material Design, changes to the lock screen, and more.

LG G3 vs Galaxy Note 3 - 4

The Sprint Galaxy Note 3 Lollipop update is 1GB in size which means that users will want to set aside plenty of time for the download and install process. Samsung says that the updates can take 30 minutes to an hour to install.

Sprint rolls its Android updates out in batches over the course of a week which means that some users probably won’t see the update emerge for a few days at least.

Sprint Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop Update Pushing Out Now

Sprint is also rolling out a Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop update that’s similar to the one pushing out for the Galaxy Note 3. If you have a Sprint Galaxy Note Edge, you’ll want to check for the update today. If it’s not available, it should be available soon.

AT&T Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop Update Confirmed

AT&T’s also confirmed a Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop update. The update will apparently start rolling out today though details about the release are still scarce. The carrier hasn’t posted any details to its website either which means that the update remains a mystery, at least for now. (It’s also possible that this rep is wrong but he does call the Galaxy Note Edge out by name.)

Note-Edge-3-XL

AT&T is the second carrier to confirm a Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop release though it would be the first to actually release one. T-Mobile’s also confirmed a Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop release but it still hasn’t moved into the internal testing phase. This means that we’re probably a few weeks away from its roll out.

New Galaxy Note Edge Android 5.0.1 Update Confirmed

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop update is also poised to make some progress. We’re finally starting to see international carriers confirm plans to release the software. Vodafone Australia’s confirmed plans to roll out an Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update and it says that the update is now in testing ahead of a release.

Again, this is great news for Australian users and it’s also good for all Galaxy Note Edge users because it means that the update is finally picking up the pace after a slow start. Need more proof that the update is set to make considerable progress? Consider the fact that KDDI’s Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop update is set for a release in the near future as well.

Android 5.1 Lollipop Release

A Samsung Galaxy Android 5.1 Lollipop update might not be under development but it does look like Samsung has plans to release the software on at least one new device.

According to SamMobile, two devices dubbed Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 will feature Android 5.1 Lollipop on board. This doesn’t confirm Android 5.1 updates for owners of older devices but it does leave the door wide open.

Galaxy Android 5.1 rumors have suggested that it will be the update that delivers Galaxy S6 features to owners of older smartphones but that still hasn’t been confirmed by Samsung or anyone else.

Galaxy S6 Edge Lollipop Update Rolling Out

Finally, it’s worth noting that Samsung is rolling out an Android 5.0.2 Lollipop update for the Galaxy S6 Edge. The update is rather large, well over 200MB in size, and it appears to update some of the apps on board the device including S Planner. If you recently bought the Galaxy S6 Edge, keep an eye out for your bump to Android 5.0.2.

I live in Switzerland and got the update last week and I’m seriously considering switching to iPhone when my contract expires. Lollipop killed most of the things that drew me to Android in the first place. If it isn’t changed I’ll be switching to Apple.

I agree completely. My appointments saved in my calendar vanished, nothing is where I am used to finding it and that’s all I have encountered in the first ten minutes. I had no idea how badly this would effect me right before finals. No time for this crap. I have already switched to apple for all other products so it looks like I will be switching my phone now as well.

The most irritating feature of the update is the lock screen notification. Its either all or nothing. All I want on my lockscreen for notification is text messaging and that is no longer possible. this by far is the most annoying part of the update

go to easy settings – to sounds and notifications – scroll down and should say – notification – while locked – change to show all content and that should fix it

YouYou ccoalso get an app called Floatify that is for notifications and you can change all the types and styles of notifications that you get on the lock screen. Including if you want the content of the message displayed or just that you have a message. Hope that may help you in some way.

I also use Nova launcher with the tesla unread plug in that is brilliant for customising your lockscreen and notifications.

I just got the update and l’m literally in tears. lt’s terrible. lt took away so many things l liked and gave not one thing l do l like. l loved my lock screen sound and even that has changed. It’s like l got another phone. Everything is different and l wish l didn’t have 2 years left on ny contract. Also hate that they took so much of my memory. There is no way l can go back to what l loved?

I got the 5.0.1 update a few days ago for my UK Galaxy Note 4 and the notifications are all over the place! It seems to pick one notification icon and use that for all of them. I have All in one toolbox and it tells me boot speed when restarting and if I get a message or Facebook, Twitter notification they are all under the same thumbnail. It does it with ttorrent notifications too. All of them really! Waited 5 months for the update and it’s a mess! I have Floatify installed and could be possibly a conflict with that but cant see why! Who knows?!

I cannot find the S planner on my new galaxy note for lollipop Android.. can someone please tell me how to find it ? Thanks

If you go to the app drawer, the icon with 6 does on it then either scroll through until page with s planner on or press the search button and type s planner. You could then create a new shortcut on your home screen if you don’t have one now. Nothing like that changed for me however. Hope this helps.

S Planner is a problem now.
Lost the Widget but put the Icon back as found the icon in the apps. Widget is not showing on Widgets pages now.
Tasks have disappeared but it looks like you can view only quickly if scrolling via Agenda in App.
Anyone know how to get S Planner widget back and how to view Tasks as before?

Action Memo’s are now stored in S Notes.
When you pull out Note Pen and press Action Notes.
Quite clever as all accessed in S Notes.
You can save an Action Memo as a Action Memo by pressing the Tick or import to S Note by pressing bottom left of Action Note

STILL NEED HELP WITH S Planner!!

The last so-called update is a total, unmitigated CATASTROPHE

What the hell was Ssmsung thinking. If they want to be the new BlackBerry this disastrous update puts them a long way towards achieving that.

    WTH?

I just wish my Cricket Wireless samsung s4 get the lollipop date. They are very slow with pushing out updates and some phones they just don’t update at all. Even though I like Cricket this is a deal breaker.
