Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat Update Pushed Way Back

Published

on

One of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates has been pushed back close to the fall.

Since January, Samsung has been pushing out Android 4.4 KitKat updates to many of its top devices including the Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 2. The company has made steady progress pushing out Android 4.4.2 KitKat to a number of variants in a number of regions around the world including the United States where the update is available for all four of these mainstream devices.

However, there is still work to be done. Samsung still owes Android 4.4 KitKat updates to a number of big name devices including variants of the Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2. And while some of those updates appear to be on the horizon, we’re starting to see some unreleased updates pushed back close to the fall.

Australian carrier Telstra today released an updated Android update schedule, a schedule that details a number of its missing Android updates including the Android 4.4 KitKat update for its Galaxy Note 2 4G. According to Telstra, “Samsung have further delayed test submission to 15 August” which in turn has pushed back the update’s ETA to September and more specifically, September 15th.

September 15th is an extremely generic ETA and it could be that the update rolls out before or after that date. Everything depends on Samsung’s testing and the testing that Telstra will ultimately have to perform to ensure the update is ready for public consumption. Testing is extremely unpredictable and updates often encounter delays. A delay of nearly two months though is pretty rough, even by Android standards.

It’s not clear how this delay will affect other carriers that are in the same boat. Optus and Vodafone have yet to push out their Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat updates and neither has provided concrete details about its release. French carrier SFR, which says that it plans to push out the update in early August, has not relayed any news about a delay.

Galaxy-Note-2

T-Mobile is the only carrier in the United States that’s yet to roll out a Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrade and it’s still not clear when the carrier plans to make the upgrade available. T-Mobile typically does not confirm updates ahead of time and instead confirms them on the day of their release. In other words, T-Mobile Galaxy Note 2 owners may not get a heads up before the Android 4.4 KitKat update touches down.

At this point, we assume that these carriers are working on Android 4.4.2 KitKat for the Samsung Galaxy Note 2. Samsung has yet to confirm Android 4.4.3 KitKat or Android 4.4.4 KitKat updates for its Galaxy devices and it seems content to roll out Android 4.4.2 KitKat despite the presence of the new versions.

Android 4.4.3 KitKat and Android 4.4.4 KitKat represent crucial bug fixes for Google’s Android software. And with Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S5, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S3, and Galaxy Note 2 users complaining about a number of Android 4.4.2 KitKat problems, users are starting to wonder if they’ll get Android 4.4.3 KitKat or Android 4.4.4 KitKat like other top Android smartphones.

Android L on Android 4.4.4

With Android L looming in the distance, it’s possible that Samsung will shift its attention to Google’s upcoming update, expected to arrive sometime later this year alongside new Nexus devices. Android L, unlike Android 4.4 KitKat, is a major Android update that features changes to the UI in addition to brand new features.

While Samsung’s rivals have confirmed Android L updates, Samsung remains silent about upcoming Android L updates. Newer devices like the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 3 should get the update down the road though that remains unconfirmed. We should see details start to trickle out as we move closer to the fall and the Android L release date.
