iPhone 6 Rumors Point to Delay for Galaxy Note 4 Sized Competitor

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 may not face as much competition this fall as a new report outlines a potential delay for an iPhone 6 with a 5.5-inch display, while Apple focuses on a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 that will compete with the Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8.

Samsung is not the only company with a large screen smartphone, but it is the most recognizable 5.7-inch smartphone on the market with a major marketing push and an S Pen that the competition doesn’t match. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release is set for the fall, according to a Samsung executive, which puts it in on store shelves right when the iPhone 6 release is rumored.

Apple stuck with a 4-inch display for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s while Samsung pushed into larger screens on the Galaxy line of smartphones and a recent study called the Galaxy S5 display the “best performing smartphone display” on the market.

For the past several months rumors pointed to a 5.5-inch iPhone 6 competing with a Galaxy Note 4 this fall, marking the first time the two would compete with larger screens on both sides. The Galaxy Note 3 tempted some iPhone owners away during the last six months and analysts expect the iPhone 6 with a larger screen will allow Apple to convert Android fans.

A 5.5-inch iPhone 6 may not arrive in time to compete with the Galaxy Note 4 on day one.

A new report from Reuters puts a damper on an iPhone 6 large enough to be a head to head Galaxy Note 4 competitor. According to the report Apple is planning a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 release for this fall, but a larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 may be delayed. The report cites supply chain sources that also identified Japan Display Inc, Sharp and LG as producers of the new iPhone 6 displays.

The iPhone 6 display production will reportedly start in May, with a focus on the 4.7-inch model due to difficulties producing the larger 5.5-inch display using technology that allows Apple to keep the iPhone 6 thin. Apple relies on in cell touch panels in the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s to achieve the 7.6mm thin design, but sources tell the publication there are difficulties with this technology on a 5.5-inch display. Additional iPhone 6 display production will reportedly start in June.

The iPhone 6 rumors are starting to take shape in early 2014 and focus around a new design with two screen sizes. The 4.7-inch screen size is one most leaks agree on, but the larger iPhone 6 might use a 5.5-inch or 5.7-inch display depending on the source of the rumor. This is the second report that the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 release may not arrive at the same time as a 4.7-inch model. A trio of potential iPhone 6 photos leaked this week, showing a new design but there are oddities that all the legitimacy into question.

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 is also the focus of rumors, though not to the same degree as the iPhone 6. The Galaxy Note 4 release date is in the works for the fall according to rumors and reports, which would put it up against a larger iPhone 6. The Galaxy Note 4 display could arrive with an upgrade, but it is not clear if that will be in size, resolution, technology or all three.

However the iPhone 6 and the Galaxy Note 4 arrive on the market expect fierce competition as Samsung looks to sell a more refined Android experience on a large display and Apple looks to show the iPhone 6 with a larger display is worth buying.
