Galaxy Note 4 Specs Leak Disappoints

A new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 specs leak reveals very specific details about one of the features that’s allegedly coming with the Galaxy Note 4 release later this year.

For weeks, we’ve seen Samsung Galaxy Note 4 rumors swirl around pushing details about the Galaxy Note 4 specs and Galaxy Note 4 release forward ahead of the device’s September 3rd launch date in Berlin, Germany. While many of those Galaxy Note 4 details have been exciting, a new Galaxy Note 4 specs leak comes off as a bit of a disappointment.

A fingerprint reader is also likely part of the Galaxy note 4 specs.

Earlier this year, Samsung released the Galaxy S5, a replacement for the Galaxy S4 and a device that stands as the company’s current flagship smartphone. The Galaxy S5 featured a number of upgrades including a fingerprint sensor baked into its home button. The feature arrived just months after Apple put a fingerprint sensor of its own inside of the iPhone 5s’ home button.

While the inclusion of a Synaptics fingerprint sensor brought added security to owners of the Samsung Galaxy S5, the Galaxy S5 fingerprint sensor took a lot of heat for being unreliable and inconvenient. Here’s what we said about the Galaxy S5’s fingerprint sensor in our Galaxy S5 review:

The home button includes a fingerprint scanner that can unlock the phone, but it is not as reliable as the iPhone 5s’ Touch ID feature and I stopped using it after two weeks. You need to slide a finger across it just right, which leads to many failed attempts.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 specs rumors hinted at the arrival of a fingerprint sensor in an effort to keep pace with the Galaxy S5, iPhone 5s and the upcoming iPhone 6 that’s expected to have a Touch ID sensor built into its home button as well. And while many had hoped that Samsung would include a new sensor with improved technology, a new leak suggests that it will have the same fingerprint sensor as the Galaxy S5.

SamMobile reports that the Galaxy Note 4 will come with the same Synaptics’ Natural ID fingerprint sensor that Samsung embedded inside the Galaxy S5 and the upcoming Galaxy Alpha. The publication claims that this won’t be a problem because users have been using an incorrect technique with the Galaxy S5’s fingerprint sensor.

Both phones offer a fingerprint reader, but the experience is vastly different.

We went back and tried the technique on the Galaxy S5’s fingerprint sensor and we still got a mixed bag of results. This new technique also doesn’t change the fact that the fingerprint sensor is difficult to use with one hand making it far more inconvenient than the iPhone 5s’ Touch ID fingerprint sensor that simply requires users to put their thumb on the home button. The iPhone 6 is rumored to have an improved version of Touch ID, something that could potentially put the Galaxy Note 4 at a disadvantage.

Earlier this year, the Galaxy Note 4 was rumored to potentially have an area-type fingerprint sensor similar to Touch ID, rather than a swipe sensor. However, it appears that the company will stick with the latter.

It’s not all disappointing though. Samsung will reportedly tack on new software including a new featured called Web Sign-in that will allow Galaxy Note 4 users to use their fingerprint to sign into websites. It also looks like the company will bring Screen Lock, Private Mode with fingerprint authentication, Samsung Account Verification and PayPal Payments to the Galaxy Note 4 as well.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 launch is confirmed for September 3rd and there, the company will go into detail about the Galaxy Note 4 specs and the Galaxy Note 4 release date.

Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 4 is rumored to have a 5.7-inch QHD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, 3GB of RAM, a new 16MP camera with OIS, Android 4.4 KitKat, and a design that could combine both metal and plastic like the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Alpha. Those specs have firmed up over several weeks of rumors though they remain unconfirmed in the build up to Samsung’s Unpacked event.

Galaxy Note 4 release date rumors have continued to point to a quick arrival in an effort to take on the iPhone 6. Rumors have singled out the week of September 15th as a possible release window for the Galaxy Note 4 though that remains unconfirmed. By comparison, last year’s Galaxy Note 3 launched September 4th and was released on September 25th.

Samsung is clearly focused in on battling the iPhone 6, Apple’s new flagship. The iPhone 6 is expected to feature two larger display sizes with a release date in September. September 19th has been pegged as a probable release date through that date, like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date, remains unconfirmed as we head towards the fall and the month of September.
