Galaxy Note 4 vs. iPhone 6 Release Date: What We Know Now

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date and iPhone 6 release date are on a collision course this fall and now that the Galaxy Note 4 release date is confirmed, we have a better idea about how these two key release dates will compare to one another in the weeks ahead.

For more than eight months, iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 rumors swirled around together, teasing consumers with rumors regarding iPhone 6 specs, Galaxy Note 4 specs, the Galaxy Note 4 launch date, the iPhone 6 launch date, and the all so important Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and iPhone 6 release dates. Those rumors remained vague for much of the year but now that we’ve entered the month of September, we’ve seen that information start to firm up.

Earlier this week, Samsung took the stage and announced its all new Galaxy Note 4. The device is a successor to the popular Galaxy Note 3 and a device that will be coming armed with an arsenal of high-end features including a 5.7-inch Quad HD display, Snapdragon 805 processor, 16MP camera with Optical Image Stabilization, a new S Pen stylus, a new design that’s punctuated by a metal band around the side, a massive battery, a solid front-facing camera, Android 4.4.4 KitKat, and more.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 should be one of the top smartphone options this fall and we’ve already heard from a number of people who are interested in buying it when it goes on sale later this year.

Of course, the Galaxy Note 4 won’t be the only big name or big screen smartphone that arrives this fall. Rumors point to the arrival of an Apple iPhone 6, a replacement for the iPhone 5s, and a device that on paper, looks like a worthy competitor to the Galaxy Note 4.

iPhone 6 specs are rumored to include a new design with a slimmer form factor and more metal, two larger screen sizes including a 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch model, a new A8 processor, a new camera with image stabilization technology, NFC, and the company’s iOS 8 update that was first announced in June at the company’s WWDC conference in San Francisco. Needless to say, there’s reason to compare the two.

With consumers starting to get antsy and with a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date now confirmed, we want to take a look at how that official information compares to the rumored iPhone 6 release date.

Galaxy Note 4 Release Date

On Wednesday, Samsung took the stage and detailed just about everything there is to know about the Samsung Galaxy Note 4. However, it did leave out some key details including specifics concerning its global and U.S. release dates.

The company confirmed the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date for October in the United States and in regions around the world. It did not tag either of these with a specific date so it’s not clear if they are one in the same. While that remains unclear, we have seen some Galaxy Note 4 release details start to trickle out ahead of official announcements.

Yesterday, we told you that the Galaxy Note 4 release cleared a hurdle in the United States. We spotted the AT&T Galaxy Note 4 cruising through the FCC on its way to release. Getting clearance from the FCC is one of the crucial steps that a smartphone must take before an official release. In other words, the Galaxy Note 4 release in the U.S. is getting closer. Same goes for the rest of the world.

Note-4-Design

Blog of Mobile, a Japanese language site, yesterday spotted a number of known Galaxy Note 4 models passing through Bluetooth certification. Bluetooth SIG is another body that a device must pass through on its way to shelves which means that the Galaxy Note 4 release is making a ton of progress in the hours after its initial announcement.

We’ve also seen a specific Galaxy Note 4 release date pop up. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date is now rumored to be in and around October 10th thanks to several retailers in Europe. Galaxy Club, a Dutch site, reports that several Dutch retailers including GSMWijzer, Student Mobile and Cool Blue expect the Galaxy Note 4 release to arrive on October 10th. Another retailer in the Netherlands, BelSimpel, expects it to arrive five weeks from now, or, in and around that October 10th date.

As we noted yesterday, these appear to be estimates for the Galaxy Note 4 release date. While they could be based on inside information from Samsung, October 10th is not the confirmed release date for the Galaxy Note 4 in the Netherlands or for any other region around the world. Like Samsung, U.S. carriers remain mum about a specific Galaxy Note 4 release date in the United States.

Speaking of carriers, the Galaxy Note 4 is confirmed for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon in the United States. We’ve broken down each carrier, piece-by-piece, so if you’re interested in a U.S. model, take a look at our breakdown.

We still don’t know if there will be a pre-order though language on Verizon’s website seems to hint at one. Android smartphone pre-orders typically start about two weeks ahead of release so we could, perhaps, see the Galaxy Note 4 go on sale for the first time in the United States in mid-to-late September, after the iPhone 6 launch.

iPhone 6 Release Date

The iPhone 6 launch date is all but confirmed for September 9th. Apple is hosting a media event at DeAnza College in Cupertino and the iPhone 6 is heavily rumored to be the star of the show. Apple is known for announcing iPhone 6 release date details on stage during its events so we expect to see the iPhone 6 release date confirmed next week. For now, consumers must deal with rumors. And here’s how those iPhone 6 release date rumors compare to the Galaxy Note 4 release.

The iPhone 6 release date is close, but you can't con the info out of customer service employees.

iPhone 6 release rumors point to at least one release in the month of September. The latest information comes from Chinese micro-blogging site Weibo and points to a September 16-19th iPhone 6 release in China that matches with the best estimates and rumors for a U.S. iPhone 6 release as well as one in Germany. Apple traditionally launches in a small set of countries before expanding later to cover a wide swath of the globe.

Apple is also known for releasing its iPhone on the third Friday in September and September 19th lines up perfectly with the its launch event and that release window. That date is not set in stone, however.

Apple’s larger 5.5-inch iPhone 6 release date may not arrive on the same day as the 4.7-inch model. Rumors point to an arrival later on in the year with a real focus on October. VentureBeat claims that a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 release date will happen in September with a 5.5-inch iPhone 6 release date that could arrive up to a month after the initial release. This lines up with early iPhone 6 rumors including details from respected analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

Here we see a 4.7-inch iPhone 6, 5-inch Galaxy S4 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6.

Key Takeaways

At this point, that’s everything we know about the iPhone 6 release date. So what does this mean for prospective iPhone 6 vs. Galaxy Note 4 buyers? Let’s break it down.

  1. Official iPhone 6 release date information will likely arrive on September 9th. Expect to see a specific iPhone 6 release date (or release dates) emerge. We also expect to hear about a pre-order or lack of one. So unless Samsung and its carrier partners get real specific this weekend or on Monday, the iPhone 6 release will come to fruition much faster.
  2. With a Galaxy Note 4 release confirmed for October, we could see at least one iPhone 6 release date fall ahead of it.
  3. The Galaxy Note 4 will be available on all five major carriers in the United States.

Despite launching a little bit later, we could see the iPhone 6 beat the Galaxy Note 4 to shelves. And with a sell out possible, this early iPhone 6 release date would likely put immense pressure on those trying to decide between the two. Now you know why we, and many others, were disappointed that Samsung held back all of this vital information.

Look for more dominoes to fall on Tuesday.
