9 Common Galaxy Note Edge Problems & How to Fix Them

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop update delivers some big changes to the curved version of the Galaxy Note 4. It also, like Samsung’s other Android 5.0 upgrades, has brought some features not listed in the change log: Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop problems. With the Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop release gaining steam in the United States and elsewhere, we want to take a look at some potential fixes for these issues.

In late 2014, Samsung started rolling out its first Android 5.0 Lollipop update to the Galaxy S5 Lollipop. In the weeks that’ve followed, Samsung’s been rolling out several Android 5.0 Lollipop updates including upgrades to the Galaxy Note Edge, the Galaxy Note 4 variant that utilizes a screen that’s bent over the right side of the phone.

The Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop update, like Samsung’s other updates, brings a ton of big time features to the flagship Galaxy Note. And while the Galaxy Note Edge Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade is working out fine for some users, we’ve also started to hear about Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop problems. Complaints have started to grow as the Galaxy Note Edge’s Lollipop release has grown in size.

Note-Edge-1-X2

We continue to see complaints about a number of Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop issues, many of which are common after a big update like Android 5.0 Lollipop. We’re still not sure when Samsung or its carrier partners will roll out their first Android 5.0 Lollipop bug fix updates for the Galaxy Note Edge so we want to do our part and help try and solve some of these issues.

Here, we take a look at some of the Galaxy Edge Lollipop problems that have popped up for users in recent weeks and offer some possible fixes for these issues. These will help Galaxy Note Edge users who have run into problems after making the transition from Android 4.4.4 KitKat to Google’s new Android 5.0 software.

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Update Installation Problems

If the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop update (or really any update) is available but it won’t start downloading, there are a few fixes to try to jump start the installation process.

Samsung itself outlines a number of steps to take if the Lollipop download process is unable to complete. Galaxy Note Edge users that have enough storage available to install will want to ensure that the device is charged up to at least 50% before the download and installation process begins.

If that still doesn’t work, try downloading and installing over a fast Wi-Fi connection. If there are still issues after that, let the phone die, recharge to 100% and try installing again.

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Battery Life Problems

Battery life problems are common after major Android upgrades so it hasn’t been surprising to hear about Galaxy Note Edge battery life problems after the Lollipop release. The problems are isolated but that doesn’t mean that the don’t exist. And while there’s no guaranteed fix, there are certainly a few things to try before taking the phone into a store.

In our experience, third-party apps are usually the cause of most post-release Android battery life problems. Apps are the first place we would look if the Galaxy Note Edge starts exhibiting bad battery life after the move up Lollipop.

Note-Edge-2-XL

First, we recommend updating the Galaxy Note Edge’s applications with the latest bug fixes. Bug fix updates typically have a positive effect on app performance. Users will want to read reviews first to make sure that the latest bug fix update doesn’t bring catastrophic problems.

If that doesn’t help, we recommend booting the Galaxy Note Edge into Safe Mode. Booting the Galaxy Note Edge into Safe Mode will disable third-party applications which will allow users to identify potential culprits. Isolating applications will take a lot of time (users will need to do some uninstalling) but it’s worth a shot if the Galaxy Note Edge’s battery isn’t holding up after moving to Android 5.0.

Here’s how to boot the Galaxy Note Edge into Safe Mode:

  1. Power down the device. Then, press & hold the power button and volume down key.
  2. Once it boots up, you can let go of the power button but keep the volume key held down.
  3. When you have successfully entered into Safe Mode, you will notice the text ‘Safe Mode’ at the bottom left corner of the screen.

It’s also worth restarting the Galaxy Note Edge to see if that gets rid of the problem. This quick reboot will clear the cache and kill off services that might be eating away at the battery. Galaxy Note Edge users will want to try disabling NFC and Bluetooth. Disabling unnecessary services can have a positive effect on battery life.

We also suggest getting rid of live wallpapers. Live wallpapers have the potential to chew through battery in the background. Galaxy Note Edge users can also try setting a black background as that’s been known to help conserve battery. If nothing works, try replacing the TouchWiz launcher with a different launcher. Nova Launcher is one of Android’s most popular choices.

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Wi-Fi Problems

We’ve already seen several complaints about Galaxy Note Edge Wi-Fi issues and there’s a very good chance that more Galaxy Note Edge users will run into problems down the road. Problems range from slow connections to lost connectivity when the device is in a strong signal area.

If the Galaxy Note Edge starts exhibiting Wi-Fi issues, the first thing to do is to reboot the phone. Users will also want to try rebooting the local router if that hasn’t been done in awhile. We recommend unplugging the router for a good 30 seconds and then plugging it back in. Users can do the same for the modem as well.

If that doesn’t work, Samsung Galaxy Note Edge owners experiencing Wi-Fi problems might also consider updating the routers firmware. If those simple fixes do not work, it’s now time to head into the device’s settings.

Note-Edge-3-XL

First, try forcing the device to forget the Wi-Fi network that’s posing problems. Head to the desired connection in Settings and select the Forget Network option. Once that’s done, users will then need to reconnect to the Wi-Fi network with the password.

It’s also worth going into Power Saving Mode to see if Wi-Fi restrictions are in place. To access Power Saving Mode, head into Settings and then into the Power Saving Mode option. This is a known fix for Wi-Fi issues.

If none of those fixes dislodge the Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop Wi-Fi problems, we recommend updating applications. If that still doesn’t work, Galaxy Note Edge users can try booting into Safe Mode to see if apps really are the issue.

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Cellular Data Problems

We’ve seen Galaxy Note Edge users, Sprint Galaxy Note Edge users in particular, start to complain about cellular data problems after the move to Lollipop. This isn’t surprising. Cellular data problems are extremely common after major Android updates.

First, Galaxy Note Edge users will want try flipping cellular data off. Turn it back on after 30 seconds or so and see if the connection is back. If it’s not, try rebooting the device. This has worked for us in the past when cellular data abruptly stops working.

We’ve also had success popping a phone into Airplane Mode. Switch on Airplane Mode and then switch it off. This has, in the past, restored cellular data on Galaxy smartphones and tablets. If none of these work, it might be time to get in touch with the service provider, Google, or perform a factory reset to see if that works. We outline how to do that below.

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems are extremely common and we’ve seen some Galaxy Note Edge Bluetooth problems on our AT&T version of the device. Bluetooth issues are extremely common on Android smartphones but fortunately, there are a few fixes Galaxy Note Edge users can try.

Samsung Galaxy Note Edge users dealing with Bluetooth problems should first try shifting Bluetooth on and off. To do this, head into Settings and then Bluetooth and toggle the service off and then back on again after a few moments. If that doesn’t fix the problem, it’s time to forget the device’s Bluetooth connections. Head into Bluetooth and forget the device or devices in question and then reconnect.

Note-Edge-4-XL

Users trying to connect to a Bluetooth in a car will need to consult the car’s manual to reset the car’s Bluetooth connection. The process is going to be different for each make and model and that’s why we recommend consulting the car’s manual before attempting this. Once that connection has been reset and the connection’s been forgotten on the Galaxy Note Edge, try reconnecting to see if it works.

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Overheating Problems

Some Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop users say that the device has started running extremely hot after the arrival of Android 5.0 Lollipop. This can happen when playing an intense game for a few hours straight but many users are saying that it’s happening without much provocation. Thankfully, there are a few fixes to try if the Galaxy Note Edge starts getting hot for no reason.

First, try restarting the device. Leave it off for a minute or so and then boot it back up. If that doesn’t work, power it down again and this time, remove the battery and microSD card from the microSD card slot if there is one. Pop the battery back in without the microSD card in and see if that works. This has worked for us in the past.

If none of that works, we suggest booting into Safe Mode to see if it’s an app that’s causing problems. A rogue app could be overworking itself so it’s important to check to see if that’s what might be occurring.

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Performance Problems

We’ve also been hearing about drops in performance after the arrival of Android 5.0 Lollipop. Galaxy Note Edge users experiencing abnormal lag or sluggishness will be happy to know that there are an array of fixes to try and help stabilize the performance of Android.

The first potential fix that we recommend is a process that will clear the Galaxy Note Edge’s cache partition. To clear the cache partition on the device, follow these steps:

  • Turn the Galaxy Note Edge off.
  • Press and hold Home, Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the device vibrates.
  • When the Samsung logo appears, release them.
  • Tap Volume Down repeatedly until you Wipe Cache Partition. Select it with the power button. Select Yes.
  • Wait for the process to complete. It could take awhile.
  • Reboot your Galaxy Note Edge.

If that doesn’t work, try disabling some applications through Application Manager in device settings. This has been known to improve performance though it should only be used as a last resort.

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge App Problems

Samsung notes that app issues are extremely common after big releases like Lollipop. Samsung Galaxy Note Edge users experiencing issues with applications can try a few things to jumpstart performance. First, try updating the problem app. There’s a good chance that the developer’s rolled out a bug fix so users be wise to give that a shot first.

We also recommend reinstalling the application. We’ve seen success with this method several times in the past and it could resolve issues with app performance after Lollipop. If the problems continue, reach out to the developer and alert them to the problem. This will help them identify the problem and potentially fix it in a later update. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Touch More options
  2. Touch My apps > All
  3. Touch the application with the issues
  4. Scroll down to Developer
  5. Touch Send email to report the issue with the application developers

How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Problems If Nothing Else Works

If nothing here works, it’s probably time to revert back to Android 4.4 KitKat. Or if that doesn’t sound appealing, factory reset the device.

Those looking to factory reset should note that it’s a time consuming process and Galaxy Note Edge users will need to ensure that key files are backed up before starting. This process erases the entire phone and brings it back to the state that it was in when it first came out of the box.

Note-Edge-5-XL

To do this, go into SettingsUser & Backup, and select Backup and Reset. From there, select Factory Data Reset. From there, select Reset Device and then Delete All.

Sometimes, unorthodox fixes will work where common fixes fail. We also recommend taking a look at Android Central’s forums, one of our favorite Android-centric forums. For those still unable to fix Galaxy Note Edge Lollipop problems, we suggest getting in touch with the device’s service provider. If there isn’t one, get in contact with Samsung itself.

I have question: how can I contact Samsung to tell them about my Lollipop problems?

Even though I have reset the phone to factory settings I still have many (some mayor) problems
the most annoying is that almost every time I lose network connection (in elevator or in subway), when I get back to 4G area I need to restart the phone in order to be able to connect to Internet.

Under “How to Fix Galaxy Note Edge Performance Problems,” the instructions are incorrect. Instead of “Press and hold Home, Power and Volume Down buttons simultaneously until the device vibrates.” it should read “Press and hold Home, Power and Volume Up buttons simultaneously until the device vibrates.” The Volume Down button combination leads to a different menu than the Recovery Menu, which is what is needed for the clearing of the cache partition. This lead to a lengthy waste of time until I called my service provider for more accurate information. I tried to find an email address for Adam Mills, but was unable to locate one.

I don’t get the sign-in popup window when I try to connect to a wifi. Also, my battery constantly drops from a certain percentage to zero within minutes, and when I take out the battery and put it back in, it changes back to the original percentage.

Happens to me too. From 52 % to 12% to 8% then dying on me in less than 30 seconds or mostly it goes from 32% to dying. If I start charging it it starts from 32 %. But if you take it of charging again it dies. I started to think it was a battery problem cause reinstalling it from scratch did not help a bit.

The stupid Lollipop update ruins the Note Edge. When I get messages, where it used to come up on the edge screen, now it pops up in the middle of my screen and is extremely annoying. They should have made us Note Edge users able to switch the pop ups off.

My note edge randomly restarts at the most bizarre moments and then when it does restart it doesn’t allow me to unlock with my finger print. I must use my very long back-up password.
This upgrade has been frustrating, to say the least, and I hope they come up with some fixes soon.

Hi there, I have purchased Samsung Note Edge last year. It worked fine until February then it got one thin hairline vertical line in the middle of the screen, it was there for a week and disappeared. Then came and become 2 lines, after few weeks the screen had 5 lines, I was under the impression that it will be covered under warranty as HTC repaired my brother’s phone when his phone screen got blacked out. In May my phone got like 50 vertical lines on the screen, reset but no use. When I went to Samsung Service center in Kukatpally, the representative said it can’t be covered under warranty as the screen is pixellated, I have sent an email to the executive team of Samsung with reference # 2135672812 , they told me over the phone that I must be dropped the phone that’s why the lines came so not covered under warranty…This is my first Samsung phone and experienced this kind of an issue…Samsung is such a big company but can’t correct there manufacturing defects , the works fine but only the lines making little making it look bad. one of my colleague did not buy Samsung S7 edge because he feared of experiencing the same defect…the vertical lines are pink the middle and green on the right side…I will use it and let the people see this defect from Samsung phones..
