Galaxy Note Edge Release: What Not to Expect

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy Note Edge release date is confirmed for later this year though the specific release date remains in the shadows. With that in mind, we want to set the stage and take a look at what we don’t expect from the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note Edge release date in the United States and in other markets around the world.

Earlier this month, Samsung announced a slew of new products including the Galaxy Note 4, the Gear VR virtual reality headset, Gear S smartwatch, and an interesting Galaxy Note model dubbed Samsung Galaxy Note Edge. The Galaxy Note Edge will join the Galaxy Note 4 on shelves later this year and it will do so with a number of high powered features, including, a bent display.

The new Galaxy Note Edge is an odd looking smartphone that is noticeably different than the Galaxy Note 4 that launched alongside it. It looks different because the Galaxy Note Edge comes with a display that is far from ordinary. Instead of your standard flat screen like the one on the Galaxy Note 4, the Galaxy Note Edge comes with a screen that wraps around the edge of the smartphone. The feature can be seen in action in the video below.

While the curved display will be its biggest selling point, it come packed with other high-end features as well. It features Quad HD resolution, a 2.7 GHz Quad-core Snapdragon 805 with 3GB of RAM, Android 4.4.4 KitKat with Samsung TouchWiz, 16MP rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization, massive battery, and a thin 8.3mm frame.

It’s a device that’s caught the eye of consumers but there’s a big problem. We still don’t know how much it will cost or when it will be released.

The Galaxy Note 4 release date is confirmed for October but the Galaxy Note Edge release date is far more mysterious. U.S. carriers AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon confirmed the device for arrival though none of them have offered any specific details and as of right now, it’s listed as coming later this year. While we don’t have all the answers, we do want to help set your expectations.

Here, we take a look at what we do not expect from the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note Edge release date.

Release Details Months Away

At this point, we’re not expecting any Galaxy Note Edge release details before the iPhone 6 release date on September 19th. The next week and a half will likely see carriers, retailers and consumers focused on the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Announcing Galaxy Note Edge details during the next week and a half, in our view would hurt the Galaxy Note Edge more than help it.

Galaxy-Note-Edge

We’d expect concrete release details to emerge in either the last two weeks of September or in the month of October as the iPhone 6 situation begins to settle and carriers and consumers can focus in on the Galaxy Note 4 and the Galaxy Note Edge. The Galaxy Note Edge is a niche device and it, and its bent display, fall into a new product category. It’s an unproven commodity and therefore it probably won’t be a focus.

Expect carriers to shift to the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge after they take care of the iPhone 6, a device that’s likely to sell millions of times in the United States and elsewhere.

Galaxy Note Edge Release Before Galaxy Note 4

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 release date was confirmed for October. That’s far more specific than the Galaxy Note Edge release date which was confirmed for later on this year. It’s clear, at least to us, that the Galaxy Note 4 is going to be the flagship model and the one that Samsung heavily promotes against the iPhone 6.

Note-4-Design

Samsung’s Galaxy Note Edge will serve as a high-end option for early adopters that want to get their hands on new technology. The Galaxy Note 4 release is likely going to be more important to Samsung’s success in this next quarter so we expect Samsung to focus on getting it out first. Look for the Galaxy Note Edge release to come later ahead of the holidays, after the arrival of the Galaxy Note 4 in October.

Galaxy Note Edge Release on Smaller Carriers

Do not expect the Galaxy Note Edge release to come to smaller carriers. U.S. Cellular, the nation’s fifth largest carrier, isn’t offering the Galaxy Note Edge. That’s a pretty big clue as to how this Galaxy Note Edge is going to shape up.

If U.S. Cellular isn’t carrying the Galaxy Note Edge then we highly doubt that other fringe contenders like C Spire, MetroPCS or others are going to latch onto an expensive, niche product that probably won’t even come close to the Galaxy Note 4 in sales. We would expect the same from smaller markers as well. Look for the Galaxy Note Edge to be limited.

Huge Galaxy Note Edge Price Difference

Do not expect a huge difference in release date pricing for the Galaxy Note Edge. The Galaxy Note Edge price is still unconfirmed but it should be more expensive than the Galaxy Note 4. Our guess right now is that Samsung will charge a premium that’s somewhere between $50 and $150 more than the Galaxy Note 4′s expected $299.99 price point.

Galaxy-Note-Edge-1

Even if that’s not the case, don’t expect a huge difference in price at U.S. carriers. We should see them carry the Galaxy Note Edge at similar price points as they try and attract consumers that are willing to pay extra for a bent display. We expect the Galaxy Note Edge price to be expensive across the board given the technology that’s on board.

Huge Galaxy Note Edge Deals

This is a high-end device that’s almost certainly going to be expensive to make due to the display. And that’s precisely why we think U.S. carriers are going to charge an arm and a leg for the privilege of owning one.

We aren’t expecting this device to be produced in mass quantities and therefore, we don’t expect to see any major Galaxy Note Edge deals emerge in the days after its release date. Mass produced Android smartphones typically head to the bargain bin a few weeks after they’re released. We expect this phone to command a steep price tag for much of the year.

If anything, we’d expect there to be a few deals in and around Black Friday and the holidays but don’t expect a fire sale, even if the phone flops.

Tons of Accessories

The Galaxy Note Edge features a new form factor which means that we don’t expect to see the same amount of accessories that we see for your basic flat smartphone. We’ll see Samsung’s official Galaxy Note Edge accessories emerge, sure, but don’t expect to find a wide catalog of Galaxy Note Edge accessories when it arrives.

Galaxy-Note-Edge-3

The accessory market is dictated by demand. Devices like the iPhone have a wealth of options while lesser known devices typically are left with the scraps. This is not a no-name device but it’s an odd niche smartphone and we simply can’t see manufacturers bending over backwards to offer a wide selection of accessories when the market isn’t there. At least not yet.

Me thinks this will be treated as the crem da la crem samsung will pit this up with if not the most expensive iphone then not too far away? Why! Because if apple can demand silly money for the big massive 5.5 and am not on about the display the bezels make the new iPhone plus as big as note 4 phones.

I think you are totally WRONG about this phone! I believe it won’t be much more expensive than the Note 4 and it will even give the Note 4 a run for the money. The delayed release date is so that Samsung will have the time to produce enough to keep up with consumer demand. This may very well surpass the numbers that the original Note 1 produced it’s first year. Don’t under underestimate the “coolness” factor of this phablet as the younger people have more disposable income than the older family generation. I see this as a huge hit with the college crowd.

I bought this phone while in the US for the holiday.

I actuallg like it. That side panel helps a lot when needing to switch screen.

I think this is the firt phone I actually liked.

I have had Iphone 4, 4s 5 and 5s..they were ok. I only bought them because of Siri.

In Blackberry I have had the Torch. I did not like it.

And HTC that calculator bent design, that was ok but it was really something I did not like.

As for samsung, I have had S3 S4 S5…and the note edge
Edge is awesome. I recommend this. If only this has a siri like. As its couce thing is awful…so robotic.
