Galaxy S3 Android 4.1.2 Update Arriving in U.S. without Premium Suite

Owners of the Samsung Galaxy S3 in the United States, who had been looking forward to the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update because of the likelihood that the update would contain Samsung’s Premium Suite have, thus far, been disappointed as the Galaxy S3 Android 4.1.2 update in the U.S. has arrived without Samsung’s software.

In the past few days, both Sprint and Verizon have rolled out the long-awaited Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean updates for their Samsung Galaxy S3 variants. While many had hoped that the Galaxy S3 Android 4.1.2 update would bring the Samsung Premium Suite along, like it did in other regions around the world, neither the Sprint nor the Verizon Galaxy S3 brought the software.

The C Spire Android 4.1.2 update has arrived without the full Premium Suite.

The C Spire Android 4.1.2 update has arrived without the full Premium Suite.

Instead, both updates contained performance enhancements and bug fixes. Those on other carriers, namely AT&T, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular, hoping for a different outcome should start tempering their expectations as well as today, another Galaxy S3 Android 4.1.2 update rolled out in the U.S. without the Premium Suite on board.

C Spire, a regional carrier in the United States, has announced that its Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update is now rolling out to owners of the Samsung Galaxy S3. The carrier says that the software is rolling out in phases and that means that owners of the device should see the update pop up for installation over the next few days.

The carrier says that the roll out pushes out randomly to owners which means that those hopeful for an update from Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich should stay patient.

Those who wish to get the software early can snag the software right now by using Samsung Kies, the software that allows Galaxy S3 and other Galaxy owners to snag software by plugging into a PC.

The update brings a number of improvements including Google Now, an improved user interface, updated core Google apps and more. However, unlike Galaxy S3 devices in other parts of the world. C Spire’s Android 4.1.2 update doesn’t bring the long-awaited Premium Suite to the U.S, at least not all of it, which means that owners in the U.S. are still waiting for the arrival of its features.

The Premium Suite brings a number of new Samsung Galaxy S3 software features to the table including the Multi Window View from the Samsung Galaxy Note 2, a feature that allows owners to divide up the display into two halves and run two apps at the same time. Other Premium Suite features include:

  • Page Buddy – When a user plugs in headphones the Galaxy S III will bring up a page with the music player.
  • Contextual Menu – When looking at apps, sort by most frequently used apps.
  • Contextual Tag – Tag the weather, date and place a photo is taken right after snapping it.
  • Multi Window – Use two apps at once, just like on the Galaxy Note 2, to enjoy multiple apps at once.
  • Auto Share Shot Pairing with NFC – Quickly share photos with Auto Shot Share to other Galaxy S III and S-Beam devices.
  • Reader Mode – Control the text size of the web browser and tap on a page to share.
  • Facebook Lock Ticker – View a Facebook News Feed on the Galaxy S III lock screen.

C Spire’s update does bring its variant up to speed with a few features that Samsung says are also part of the Premium Suite including Easy Mode, but the full Premium Suite of features remains missing.

It’s unclear if AT&T, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular will choose to use the Android 4.1.2 update to bring Premium Suite to their variants but at this point, the odds look slim.

And while nothing is confirmed, it could be that owners have to wait until Android 4.2 Jelly Bean or beyond before getting access to all that the Premium Suite has to offer.

Just finished updating to 4.1.2 and of course no premium suit. This is absolutely ridiculous. Because of this I will probably be upgrading to the Note 2.

Gee that’s really showing them! Let samsung feel your disappointment by giving them even more money to upgrade to a newer samsung device. Guess its not so ridiculous to them!

I’ve had the GS3 since initial launch and I have still yet to see the benefit of S-beam. You can see in the video the guy having to go through multiple menus just to enable it. So my question is…Why not just share files via Bluetooth 4.0, which has a transfer rate of 3Mbs and you can be 100m away? Why do I have to go tue extra step of physically touching my phone with the person I’m trying to share files with? So many of these software features are pointless and don’t present any real benefit. Do I really need to know the weather of the time the photo was taken? Again, pointless.
If I were put in charge of making a new phone, I’d focus less on pointless apps and software that only bog your phone down, and concentrate more on making things like extended batteries and connectors standard. I hate knowing that I just bought a phone that is supposedly worth $600, and now I gotta spend an additional $40 to buy a battery that actually compliments the phone adequately. Not spend $600 and get a phone with a battery that dies inside of 90 minutes. Thats the phone I’d pay more attention to. Or one with bluetooth dongles (a $2 part) included. Quit bragging about all these pointless apps that don’t offer any real convenience. That is all.

You are complaining about ONE feature of many on the S3 what others do you find “pointless”. Smart Stay where the phone stays one as long as you are looking at the screen is pointless? You’d rather continue touching the screen constantly? Smart Alert tells you if you’ve received a text/email/call while away from your phone, Direct Call while texting or contact info open just lift S3 to ear and automatically dials that person is useful, Driving Mode where it will verbally say the name of the person calling you or person texting you and read the text message, That $600 also includes a beautiful 4.8 vibrant colored screen and the ability to expand storage with an SD slot. And the battery on the S3 is a large 2100 mAh battery that lasts most of the day what is this 90 minute nonsense? It seems you are a person who doesnt know how to use their phone adequately perhaps an “idiotproof” iPhone is for you.

just felt i should add that over half of the features are incomplete without the prem. suite…also smart stay is one of them, it doesn’t really work…

smart stay is a great idea, but doesn’t work well enough to make it worth it. And the ability to extend the storage to an sd card is limited because you cannot actually install apps on the sd…

Totally agree with Charles. So many worthless options & apps that are virtually purposless just so they can list another thing other phones don’t have. Theres a reason other phones don’t have them-because they’re USELESS. I’d far prefer the option of easily removing their bloatware that eats up memory and sucks battery life, without having to root the phone.

My Galaxy SIII’s keyboard takes forever to come up after the update; large delay. The phone is also generally slower over all. Am I the only one seeing this.

    • Alex

      03/08/2013 at 3:29 pm

Yup. That’ the only change I’ve seen. My phone takes a little longer to process things. There is always something with these updates!!!

I have noticed this too. it takes a good 10 seconds for the keyboard to appear.

I also no longer have the option to enlarge the text in readers mode by stopping the screen on the sides. I have to use two fingers to “pinch out”.

      Disappointed.

Noticed the same thing re enlarging text. I loved that feature and hate having to remove my hand to use the 2 finger pinch. Wtf? Their heads are on backwards

My Galaxy S3 was just updated to the 4.1.2 version and I must say that I am very unhappy with it. The haptic feedback is mysteriously enabled despite the fact that I have in disabled in the settings. Whenever I type a lengthy text message, or a message on a website or app, the text decides to delete itself without reason.

    • tmclaren01

      03/26/2013 at 7:44 am

Yes – I’ve also noticed a few problems like the settings for haptic and click noise for the keyboard can not be disabled for texting.

I’ve noticed touch screen crashes and blank screens after unlock since the upgrade. I have to pull the battery to force a hard restart to get the phone back to working order. Anyone else seeing these issues?

Haptic feedback might be turned off because you might have power saving on

The new update has only slowed my phone down and it takes forever for my keyboard to appear!!! My phone was perfectly fine before the update.

Something I’ve noticed with the new update, you have to hit the space bar twice when texting and back space onve to have commas etc pop up. Its kind of annoying, surely don’t remember it being this way before.
