Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat Release: Update Arrives, Verizon MIA

Published

on

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat release continues in the United States as the T-Mobile Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update becomes the latest KitKat update to emerge for users inside the U.S. Its arrival also means that the Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat release will be the last amongst major carriers.

Several weeks ago, Samsung began rolling out the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update to users inside the United States. Sprint was the first carrier to push out the update and it was followed by U.S. Cellular and AT&T. Today, a fourth carrier has joined the party as T-Mobile announced the arrival of its own Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update.

The update was expected to be next in line given that T-Mobile already rolled out the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update and given that the update had been teased, for several days, on T-Mobile’s website. Today, T-Mobile confirmed our expectations with a Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat roll out that is now pushing out Over-the-Air and and through Samsung Kies.

Those who want to avoid waiting simply need to download and install Samsung Kies and pull the update through their PC. Those who aren’t as impatient can wait for the update to arrive Over-the-Air.

The change log for the update remains missing in action though we expect Samsung to update its support page with all of its features sometime later today. The update is expected to be similar to the AT&T, U.S. Cellular and Sprint Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat updates that rolled out to owners earlier this year.

Those updates featured a lot of Android 4.4 KitKat features but went light on other changes. Samsung appears to be saving major upgrades to TouchWiz for a future Android update.

The release of the T-Mobile Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update means that the Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update will, as expected, be the last major Android 4.4 KitKat update to arrive in the United States. The update remains missing in action and Verizon still hasn’t confirmed it for arrival.

Of course, when it does arrive, it probably won’t be the last Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update overall. Smaller pre-paid and regional carriers are likely cooking up Android 4.4 KitKat updates as well and carriers like C Spire Wireless and Cricket Wireless should push out their updates in the future as well.

Whether or not the Verizon Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update beats them to the punch remains to be seen.

Not counting on it beating the smaller telecom providers. Man, I thought AT&T was the worst until I switched over to Verizon.

When is the Kitkat update for the Note 3 on AT&T?

Well John there is a common denominator here. It’s either the phone or the user.

Verizon works fine for me and has for a long time.

They are the best for service but as far as system updates they suck ass… I’m going back to motorola after this. Samsung takes forever to release os updates.

I’m on T-Mobile. Today’s 4.4.2 update FIXED AVRCP! Pandora now displays song title info on my devices including car radio (RCD510 VW) as does Spotify, Stitcher, I-Heart, Google Music, stock app, the new Milk, and even Botifier!
My Cup Runneth Over (technologically speaking)
Also this update introduces fullscreen lockscreen music controls and album art. White notification icons grace the right side of the notification panel and a new camera shortcut option can be added to the lockscreen (at the cost of the custom picked icons in the lockscreen launcher). A new language choice is in the T-Mobile update. (Accented English for developers). The notification panel no longer displays the two separate notification categories. They are now grouped together in time sequence. Clearing notifications clears all but the ongoing notifications (ie Weather etc).
Google Wallet’s tap to pay feature has been enabled on this device as well as the proprietary ISIS. I choose Google! A New NFC icon decorates the black and white notification bar whenever that feature is turned on.
Fonts appear clearer and easier to rread and the messaging app now allows a separate font size than that of the rest of the phones display. An updated Samsung keyboard is sure to give its users new features as well as some apps now displaying a rounded style for pop-up notifications (fade in /fade out).

If you had a live wallpaper on the lockscreen/homescreen before the uupdate and find your effect has been changed from ripple or light effect to a boring click lock, this is normal. Samsung ‘fixed’ the glitch that allowed live wallpaper and dynamic lock effects to be used simultaneously. Lock screen effect choice greyed out? Change your lockscreen wallpaper to an image and try again.
Upon downloading this update, I noticed that several apps were missing from my phone. I assumed it might be the SD card issue known with KitKat…. But some apps had widgets as well which were missing so this theory may not hold water. Either way, I reinstalled them with little trouble.
    Loving KitKat!

4.4.2 runs great on Nexus 7. Came installed with Kitsap and new snapdragon processor from Qualcomm. Hope it works well for S3 & S4.
