Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 Release Breakdown

The Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update releases are still far from over and the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat releases have just begun. Here, we take a look at all of the important details that owners of these Galaxy devices need to know about Android 4.4.2 KitKat and the rumored Android 4.4.3 KitKat update.

As we approach the month of June, Samsung Galaxy Note and Galaxy S owners are still in the midst of a major Android update roll out. Since January, we’ve seen Samsung push numerous Android 4.4 KitKat updates out but there are still plenty of Android 4.4 KitKat updates that have yet to emerge from the shadows.

Many Samsung Galaxy Note 3 users are still waiting for Android 4.4 KitKat to arrive. The update, which has been rolling out since January, still hasn’t finished and from the look of things, there is a good chance that the six month mark will arrive before the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update is complete.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update, an update that has been pushing since February, still hasn’t rolled out to every Galaxy S4 on the planet. In fact, there are some Galaxy S4 users in the United States that still haven’t received their upgrade to Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

We’ve also seen both the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates emerge in recent weeks though their roll outs are still limited in scope. In fact, their slow deliveries point to a possible shift from Android 4.4.2 KitKat to Android 4.4.3 KitKat, a newer version of Google’s current Android software.

With rumors and details swirling around, it’s time to take another look at what we know about the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung Galaxy S4, Samsung Galaxy S3, and Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates and their release dates.

Samsung Galaxy Note 3

There has been no shortage of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates in May. We’ve seen the update land for its last carrier variant in the United States, the Verizon Galaxy Note 3, and we’ve seen it push out to a number of other models including updates for the LTE version in New Zealand, France and Singapore. The LTE model is the SM-N9005.

There are, however, several Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat updates that remain missing in action. And from the look of things, the update is certainly going to stretch into June and it could, perhaps, stretch even deeper into the summer.

Telstra, an Australian carrier, recently released an updated Android update schedule. The carrier still has not announced plans for a Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update, a sign that the update could be weeks, if not months away.

Vodafone Australia and Optus both have confirmed the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update for arrival but both suggest that the update will be pushing out in June. Neither carrier has received the update from Samsung though, a sign that we are certainly still weeks away from an official release. Carriers typically take a few weeks to internally test an update.

While the update is still unfinished, rumors suggest that Samsung might be planning an Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for the Galaxy Note 3 at some point down the road. Android 4.4.3 KitKat is expected to be a bug fixer so it’s not clear how it might affect the Galaxy Note 3, a device that not only utilizes Android features but Samsung TouchWiz features as well.

Rumors suggest that we could see Samsung skip Android 4.4.2 KitKat for Android 4.4.3, at least for some devices, but it’s not clear if a carrier like Telstra is willing to make that jump. At least not yet.

Samsung Galaxy S4

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat is about as old as the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat update and is about as accomplished. We’ve seen it emerge for numerous devices including a majority of the variants found in the United States.

In May, we’ve seen the update push out to users in Israel, Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Peru. And while we’ve seen an incredible push in the last 20 days, Samsung and its partners still have some work ahead of them.

Maybe the most glaring absence is the Galaxy S4 Active Android 4.4 KitKat update for AT&T, an update that began pushing out on April 16th but was pulled a few days later for unknown reasons. The software upgrade page on AT&T’s website still lists the update as temporarily unavailable and AT&T still hasn’t told us when users can expect it to roll out again.

There are two other updates still missing in the United States. MetroPCS and C Spire still haven’t rolled out their Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades and it’s not clear when they’ll be rolling out. We did recently see the C Spire KitKat update emerge on Samsung’s site but the tease did not reveal anything specific about the carrier’s plans.

The Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update remains MIA for Telstra Australia users, a sign that the update’s push could be weeks, if not months out. Typically, the carrier gives users a substantial heads up and we just haven’t seen that happen with the Galaxy S4 or Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4 KitKat upgrades.

Optus and Vodafone Australia haven’t budged from their May to June estimates though neither of them have received the update from Samsung. Again, this points to a release that is weeks away at least which means that the overall Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat release still is far from the finish line.

Like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, the Galaxy S4 is rumored to be getting Android 4.4.3 KitKat at some point down the road, it’s just not clear when.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update started pushing out in late April and since then, the roll out has been extremely quiet. According to SamMobile, the GT-7100 Android 4.4 KitKat update has pushed for users in Brazil, Columbia, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines.

Samsung’s GT-7105, the LTE model, hasn’t been so lucky. The update has evidently pushed out to the model in Nordic countries but other than that, the update remains unreleased.

We’ve seen a number of confirmations emerge, however. Vodafone Australia and Spain have both confirmed the update and so has Optus in Australia, Rogers in Canada, Sprint in the United States, and SFR in France. Vodafone Australia, Optus and SFR all point to a release in the month of June while Rogers says that the update should be “coming soon.”

Specific release dates will remain hard to come by because carriers do not talk about roll out dates. Dates are dependent upon internal testing which means that they are subject to change at a moment’s notice.

Rumors suggest that Samsung is thinking about skipping Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates for some devices and heading straight to Android 4.4.3. It’s not clear which devices might benefit from this though given the slow nature of the Galaxy Note 2’s roll out, it’s entirely possible that some carriers will opt for the newer version of Android 4.4. At this point though, users should expect Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

Samsung Galaxy S3

Finally, the Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update, one of the more mysterious Android 4.4 updates in the entire world. Thus far, we’ve only seen the update emerge for the Sprint Galaxy S3. That update emerged earlier this month and it remains Samsung’s only Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update to date.

Rumors have suggested that the Galaxy S3 LTE push will begin in May though a specific date still hasn’t been singled out. We have seen one carrier, Rogers in Canada, confirm an Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Galaxy S3 though the carrier is mum about a specific release date. Other Canadian carriers remain silent though we often see carriers push updates out around the same time.

With only one update out, it could be that Samsung will opt to deploy Android 4.4.3 KitKat for the Galaxy S3. This isn’t set in stone but it remains a possibility.

Samsung recently announced that the Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 KitKat update would not land for the 1GB GT-i9300 version of the Galaxy S3 due to performance issues. Developers have taken it upon themselves to release a Galaxy S3 Android 4.4 update and it appears that a fairly stable version of the software has been released.

For many Samsung Galaxy S3 users, this unofficial version of Android 4.4 will be the only way to get Google’s latest Android update on board the device.

I have heard that the 3G S3 wont be getting the update. What do you think about the 4G version?

Samsung said only 2gb models of the Galaxy S3 will be updated, so for example, T-Mobile sells a LTE and 4g version of the Galaxy S3, and even though Galaxy S3 with “LTE” will only be getting the update, all GS3’s with 2gb of ram should get it. Hope that answers your question.

I have the SCH-I535 S3 and I have noticed that my apps have been batch style updating. This usually happens around update time.
