While the attention of many Samsung Galaxy smartphone and tablet owners has shifted to Google’s new Android 5.0 Lollipop update, many users are still waiting for Samsung’s aging Android 4.4 KitKat update to arrive. Over the past few days, we’ve seen a number of new Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Note Edge, and Galaxy S4 Android 4.4 KitKat update details emerge ahead of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

Earlier this month, Samsung started rolling out its first Android 5.0 Lollipop update. The Android 5.0. update, which landed for the Samsung Galaxy S5, is still not widespread though and it’s not expected to land for top devices until the early part of next year. Despite its arrival, Samsung and its carrier partners still plan to roll out Android 4.4 KitKat updates to top devices, ahead of the Android 5.0 Lollipop update.

New Samsung Galaxy KitKat release details continue to pop up as we push toward the new year and toward the start of several new Samsung Galaxy Lollipop updates. Several international carriers have spelled out their KitKat plans for big name devices including the Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge and the aging Samsung Galaxy S4.

French carrier SFR claims that it will be pushing out its Galaxy Note 2 4G Android 4.4.2 KitKat update and Galaxy Express 2 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update sometime this month. The carrier claims that it will also be pushing out Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates to the Galaxy Z4 zoom, Galaxy Mega, and Galaxy Grand 2. The carrier makes no mention of when those remaining updates will push out.

Vodafone Australia’s confirmed a number of new details including a Galaxy Note Edge Android 4.4.4 KitKat update that’s set to be delivered today. The carrier also says that it plans to release an Android 4.4 KitKat update for the Galaxy Note 3 after it completes testing. A Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update remains out of sight as the carrier is still awaiting the software in for testing.

Fellow Aussie carrier Optus says that it will be pushing out a maintenance release for the Galaxy Note 3 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update that it expects to approve soon. It’s not clear what the update will have on board but it is clear that the update will land before the carrier can push out an Android 5.0 Lollipop update for its aging former flagship.

Telstra today released an updated schedule for its Android updates and it’s not pretty for Galaxy users. Several of the carrier’s remaining Android 4.4 KitKat updates have been pushed into next year with ETAs currently set for February. The carrier says that the Galaxy S4 KitKat update, Galaxy S4 mini KitKat update, and Galaxy Note 2 KitKat update have all been pushed into next year.

Samsung first started rolling out the Galaxy S4 Android 4.4.2 KitKat update in February meaning it could take a full year for Telstra to deliver the Android 4.4.2 KitKat update to the Galaxy S4. The Galaxy Note 2 Android 4.4 KitKat update first started pushing out in April.

As for North America, Canadian carrier Rogers says that it plans to push out an Android 4.4 KitKat update to the Galaxy S4 mini, Galaxy S3 mini, and Galaxy Tab 8.0. Those updates have been listed on its schedule for quite some time now so it’s not clear how long they are going to take to arrive.

Samsung says that it will be rolling out a new Android 4.4.2 KitKat release for the Sprint Galaxy Note 2. The release is focused on security enhancements and bug fixes and the change log includes:

  • HD voice icon added
  • ORNL enabled
  • Google security patches (SSL, Towelroot, and TrustZone)
  • Bug fixes

The company claims that the update will start rolling out in early January, January 6th to be exact, so owners of the Galaxy Note 2 will want to keep an eye out for the update a few days after the new year.

With Android 5.0 Lollipop on the way, it’s clear that Samsung is still very much focused on Android 4.4 KitKat, and its remaining Android 4.4.4 KitKat and Android 4.4.2 KitKat updates. We should see Android 4.4 KitKat updates continue to push out as we head deeper into December and deeper into the new year. And if this roll out is any indication, the Android 5.0 Lollipop release for some devices could take several months, if not a full year.
