Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update Hits the U.S.

Published

on

In a surprise turn of events this morning the Samsung Galaxy S5 in the United States started receiving the absolute latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop software update. Last week we heard reports that it was coming soon for the international Galaxy S5, under the testing phase, and most weren’t expecting US carriers to deliver the update for at least another month.

However, this morning multiple reports have indeed confirmed the Galaxy S5 in the United States is getting Android 5.1.1 Lollipop. Currently all the news and updates have been aimed at the new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, but today T-Mobile started pushing 5.1.1 for the Galaxy S5 from last year.

In April, Google confirmed a follow-up to its Android 5.1 update. That being a small Android 5.1.1 Lollipop release aimed fixing a few bugs and improving on the initial release. The update has been available on Nexus devices for several weeks now and it’s slowly starting to arrive for non-Nexus devices.

The first Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for a Samsung device in the United States came with T-Mobile as well, which was a surprise in itself, and now many are even more surprised it’s hitting the older Galaxy S5.

Samsung starting to roll out Android 5.1.1 for its Galaxy smartphones and earlier this month, the company pushed out an Android 5.1.1 update for the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge on T-Mobile in the United States, but so far that’s the only US carrier to release Google’s latest software. We were expecting AT&T, Verizon and others to be up next, and deliver Android 5.1.1 for the Galaxy S6, but instead it’s T-Mobile again, but delivering it for the Galaxy S5.

T-Mobile nor Samsung have confirmed or even announced the update, so either it went out early, or they’ll be making formal announcements shortly. This means that there’s no exact details regarding what’s in the update, or a changelog. We’re expecting the same theme engine available on the Galaxy S6 to hit the Galaxy S5, but it won’t have the same software in terms of visual changes. Users are reporting it still has the older version of TouchWiz, to keep changes minimal for Galaxy S5 owners.

Those with a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S5 can expect the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update to arrive as an over the air software update like all others, or users can head into settings > about phone > and check for updates themselves.

Read our early Galaxy S5 Lollipop review to figure out if you should install this update.

As an added benefit, users can also download and install the Samsung Kies PC software, and pull the latest T-Mobile Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update that way as well.

It’s worth noting that the Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 update wasn’t expected to arrive until at least next month, and even the Galaxy Note 4 Android 5.1.1 update is rumored for July. The Galaxy S5 Android 5.1.1 update doesn’t have a release date yet, but is here for one carrier here in the United States, that being T-Mobile.

We’re not yet sure what all is new, or if this was accidentally pushed out by T-Mobile. It is a large 600MB update though, so we’re expecting lots of changes. Those who want the latest and greatest may want to get the update now before it’s pulled. While others may want to wait for some announcements, feedback, and details regarding what’s new and if this update causes any problems. The initial Android 5.0 update was riddled with small issues, so this could fix most of them, but also introduce a few new ones itself. It’s hard to tell.

All said and done, at least one version of the Galaxy S5 in the United States is getting the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update, and hopefully more Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 updates arrive in the near future. We’ll update as soon as we know more.

Ok, so I’m hearing all the bad that could happen and about the cool functions that are gone with the update, could you tell me what improvements come with the update? I just bought this S5 after having an Lg that was a nightmare, the last thing I want is to screw up my awesome phone!

I don’t what I want now because I finally got the 5.0 on Thursday and so many bugs already. Now you are talking about 5.1. Should I get it or go back to my 4.2?

      Hi Kate,

What they told you was a lie. I’ve been going back and forth between Android KitKat and Android Lollipop. I recently just reverted back to my Android KitKat version on my Galaxy S5. All you have to do is look up “How do I revert back to Android KitKat 4.4.4 on my Galaxy S5” and that should help you get better battery life, less crashed, etc. Hope this helped! :)

5.1.1 for s5 tmobile destroyed battery life. I went from 75% battery to dead in 45 minutes. DO NOT UPGRADE TO 5.1.1 I was also told by tmobile no turning back. Stick with 5.0 for now. wait until 5.1.2 or whatever next upgrade is.

Samsung is such a bad company now. I wish they would just give their users android M already. i have been waiting for lollipop since September 2014. I purchased my galaxy S5 in June 2014 after my galaxy s3 was rubbish and the screen broke. I then noticed that the software 4.4.2 of my s5 was retarded and worse than the software on my s3 i had absolutely no control over my device and its functions. full of bloatware and such. i urge all samsung users to pressure samsung into giving us android M. i didnt buy an s5 for it to have worse software than my s3. Samsung is angering its users by giving us retarded software. all current software developers of samsung should just leave their jobs or be fired because they are useless and dont deserve our money. they are greedy and must learn how to develop software. samsung must stop beimg retarded and Matthew Thomas is a fag.

I downloaded the new update and it seems to be a little more lag but it doesn’t overheat like every 10 minutes like before. I like the update cuz my battery lasts longer since it doesn’t overheat that much.

The new update is driving me crazy. The phone seriously lags. It will take some time to flip between apps… I just noticed the change right after I updated on the Galaxy S5.

The 5.0 update (S5 for Tmobile) sucked. My phone would not stay connected to home wifi. I bought a new router (Linksys) as I’d read problems between Samsung and DLink. Still the problem persisted. Connected to work wifi no problem. Had nothing to do smart switch. Now comes 5.1.1 and the phone sucks even worse. Even as I type this the damn thing is unresponsive on the keyboard (maddening when trying to enter my password since my phone is encrypted) the phone still won’t stay connected to wifi, and the battery life has declined as well. This thing is getting rooted and flashed backto kitkat 4.4.2.

I just got it this this morning and after reading what bad things can happen after upgrade I’m not doing it. It’s stupid to upgrade and loose life of your phone and why is it called an upgrade when your phone does worse as if it needed an upgrade. Should be called a downgrade because that’s what it seems like. This whole upgrade doesn’t make sense to me and why would you do it unless you just like or want your phone to function poorly.

I was finally able to update to 5.1.1. I wasnt able to before due to low memory. Now that i updated, my phone became incredibly fast and lasted longer. I dont know why people are complaining.
