on

With a slew of Samsung Galaxy S7 rumors swirling and reports of a February release date, smartphone buyers are looking for more details while weighing all of their options. With that in mind, here we’ll be rounding up all the rumors to paint a better picture of what could be coming late next month.

The current Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge were revealed in March, and hit the market on April 10th. They’re still great phones, but something better is coming extremely soon. The Galaxy S7 is on a lot of buyers radar, and here’s what we know so far based on countless rumors.

We recently wrote an article on why no one should buy the Galaxy S6 right now, and that’s because some great new phones are coming in the near future. And none has higher hopes, expectations and fans, than the Galaxy S7. It has big shoes to fill, and we know plenty about it already which we’ll detail below.

The first Galaxy S7 rumors actually started to appear in September, even before the Galaxy Note 5 was released. However, it wasn’t until December that they really picked up. Reason being, is Samsung wants to release it earlier than any prior year, just like the Galaxy Note 5 was released in August of 2015 instead of October. 10 month release cycle, rather than one a year.

An earlier release means more time ahead of Motorola, LG, HTC, Apple, and even Google’s Nexus lineup. It’s this, which has so many rumors swirling right now. Simply because all signs are pointing to the Galaxy S7 (or three) being announced in February, and released before the end of the month or in very early March. Meaning it’s less than 45 days away. Here’s everything we know.

Galaxy S7 Design

Everything we’ve heard from reliable sources like the Korean Times, Wall Street Journal, Reuters and more, claim the Galaxy S7 will look nearly identical to the Galaxy S6 from last year. All aluminum and glass, whinch isn’t a bad thing. The Galaxy S6 won tons of design awards, despite removing the micro-SD slot and not having a removable battery.

It may look similar, but it will be a very different phone that’s better, faster, more powerful, somehow manage to be thinner, have better battery life and more. Similar to Apple’s 6 and 6s approach, only different.

Initially we heard four models were coming, and one could be a 6-inch Galaxy S7 Plus, but that doesn’t appear to be on the cards. Instead, latest rumors suggest the Galaxy S7 will come in three different models to hit all major size and form factors that buyers want. Here are the three models which were somewhat confirmed earlier this month.

  • Samsung Galaxy S7
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
  • Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge+

Internal documents reportedly leaked showing the names above, confirming that three models will be released, and that the rumors of a Galaxy S7 Plus will not be happening. We’ll have to wait for the Note 6 to get a bigger screen.

Above that is a render from @Onleaks, who accurately received schematics or blueprints for countless other phones, like the recent Nexus 6P. His case manufacturers provide them, and have been dead accurate in the past. It looks similar, has a few changes, and that camera bulge is tiny. The camera is actually much smaller, but more on that below.

We see the same all glass and aluminum design, camera on back, fingerprint scanner in the home button and more. Most of the changes will be under the hood, software tweaks, and better camera and battery performance.

Samsung is expected to stick to the same 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD S-AMOLED display for the Galaxy S7, a slightly bigger but listed as the same 5.1-inch Galaxy S7 Edge, then a large Galaxy S7 Edge+. This is where rumors are all over the place. Some suggest the Galaxy S7 Edge+ will be 5.5-inches, while recent leaks believe it will be 5.7-inches just like last years Galaxy S6 Edge+. It makes sense to have the same 5.7-inch screen as last year, even if many thought that was too big. Going down to 5.5 makes it easier to use, and reserves the 5.7-inch size for the flagship Note 6.

Galaxy S7 Specs

It looks the same, feels the same, and comes with a similar curved screen model, so what’s changed? A lot. Leaked information, specs, benchmarks and more have provided the info below. Then again, everything could be wrong, or purposely leaked by Samsung to keep it a surprise, so take it all with a grain of salt.

Galaxy S7 Specs (Rumored)

  • 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD Display
  • 8-Core Qualcomm 820 Processor with 4GB of RAM (Exynos in some regions)
  • 32 and 64GB storage options (Micro-SD reportedly confirmed)
  • New 12.3 Megapixel Rear Camera with f/1.7 aperture, OIS and more
  • 3,000 mAh battery with Fast Charging, Wireless Fast Charging (3,600 on Galaxy S7 Edge)
  • Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with TouchWiz
  • Fingerprint and Iris Eye Scanner
  • IP67 Dust & Water Resistance (Rumored)
  • Flat Design with no (or smaller) camera bulge
  • USB Type-C charging port unknown
  • Quick Charge 3.0 Technology
  • more

As you can see above, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is stacking up to be another great phone. It will have an improved 5.1-inch Quad-HD display, better battery life, an improved camera, while also being thinner and more sleek. Now that’s impressive. It should come with the latest 8-core processor with 4GB of RAM, tons of storage, and return the micro-SD slot that made so many pass on the Galaxy S6.

Galaxy S7 Camera

The new 12.3 megapixel camera may sound like a downgrade, but it won’t be. Samsung continues to make some of the best cameras available, and the Galaxy S7 will be no different.

Just like the 12 megapixel camera in the Google Nexus 6P or iPhone 6s, Samsung’s new phone will have lower megapixels but a bigger and faster sensor coming in at f/1.7 aperture. Ask any photographer, and that means better. Megapixels aren’t everything. In fact, they aren’t all that important unless you’re printing huge photos. The bigger sensor in the Galaxy S7 will be much faster. Meaning less hand shake and capture more light with each shutter. Resulting in better color accuracy, less blur from movement, and produce stunning photos and video. Add in image stabilization, and this should be the best smartphone camera of 2016. The Galaxy Note 5 was the best for a while, but it’s about to be beat. Video should be excellent as well.

Galaxy-S6-13

The sensor is bigger, but the camera module isn’t. This will reportedly give Samsung more room for the large 3,000 mAh battery with support for Fast Wireless charging, and Quick Charge 3.0 which will recharge the phone from 0-80% in 30 minutes. Making it one of the fastest charging smartphones on the market. The battery will not be removable, but that won’t be needed when it recharges so quick. Again, these are only rumors. This is also what will make the phone thinner, and we won’t have as big of a bulge on the back for the camera.

Galaxy S7 Software

With the design remaining similar, the team was reportedly able to focus on other areas like the camera, battery, and software. As a result, they put tons of effort into the software according to some reports.

Galaxy-S6-Edge-9

In fact, the report above suggests Samsung has been working with Google to make the software run better than ever. Claiming that Touchwiz, which covers stock Android, will be the best and slimmest version yet that’s light, fast, and stable. We’ve heard that before, and TouchWiz often bloats the experience, so we’ll have to wait and see.

Other information suggests Samsung will add an Iris (eye) scanner for improved security, using sensors that are more accurate than any phone available. The phone can unlock, sign into apps, make purchases and more all by the user glancing at it, and the sensors scanning your eyes. We’ve seen this on Windows devices, but it doesn’t work well. Samsung reportedly has a better solution.

Speaking of software and hardware, since as early as December we’ve been hearing Samsung will take on Apple and make the display pressure sensitive, like 3D Touch.

The video above isn’t new, but shows a few of the many potential new features we could see in the Galaxy S7 with a pressure-sensitive display. Allowing for advanced controls using the pressure of a tap, touch, or press. The iPhone 6s and 3D Touch received mixed reviews, while some loved it, and we’re hearing at least one or two Android phones will have it in 2016.

Galaxy S7 Release Date

Finally, lets talk about the release date. We’re thinking March 4th. Following Samsung’s recent trends by releasing the Galaxy Note 5 two months early, announcing and releasing it in the same month (August) it looks like the same could happen with the Galaxy S7. In fact, multiple sources have suggested it will be announced on February 21st ahead of Mobile World Congress, and released either the same day, or within two weeks. Meaning the end of February, or on Friday March 4th. The Galaxy S6 was released around the globe on Friday, April 10th 2015.

Above is a tweet from one leakster who’s been somewhat accurate in the past, claiming the phones will be revealed on February 21st. He says it isn’t early, because MWC is when the Galaxy S6 was announced, but too many different reports have all said it will be here within weeks of the announcement. So expect that.

It’s reasonable to believe all the rumors we’re hearing right now, which suggest the Samsung Galaxy S7 will be announced on February 21st, and released within weeks of that date. This will be ahead of any iPhone 7 details, and give Samsung a leg up on the Android competition. Case manufacturers already have the final designs as well, lending credence to the reports of an early release. We can’t be sure, but assume the Galaxy S7 will be available before March comes to a close. We’re also hearing the LG G5 will be revealed on the 21st, and HTC announced its flagship phone at Mobile World Congress last year too. So buyers could see three major new phones before the end of February.

Galaxy S7 Carriers & Pricing

As many know, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge will be released on all major carriers, likely in at least 2-3 different color options and storage sizes, but we’ll have to wait for the announcement to know for sure. The Note 5 was announced in four colors, but only two were in the US for the first few months. We never get all the colors, although some carriers or stores may get exclusives on Blue, Gold, Rose Gold or other colors.

We’re expecting all carriers in the US to release it around the same day like the Galaxy S6 an Note 5, and probably for the same price as last year.

Galaxy-S6-Review-13-X2-720x479-720x479

The Galaxy S6 was $199 with a new 2-year contract and $599 outright ($649 from AT&T) for the 32GB model from most carriers, then went up with more storage. The Galaxy S6 Edge was a lot more, and we could see the price different drop a little this year, as the Edge has been refined. We’re expecting the Galaxy S7 to ring in around the same price as the Galaxy S6.

As of right now though, all of this information comes from rumors or leaks. No actual images of the Galaxy S7 have surfaced yet. That being said, if the phone is going to be released in February, expect more details, leaks, and pictures to surface any day now. We won’t know anything for sure until actual devices leak, or Samsung makes the announcements live on stage.

Stay tuned for more details, as we’re expecting more and more to surface over the coming weeks.
