Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S5: What Buyers Need to Know

Published

on

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S7 is official and readily available, buyers are weighing all of their upgrade options. With millions of Galaxy S5 owners passing up the Galaxy S6 for the lack of a micro-SD slot and more, not to mention 2-year upgrades now ready to go, here’s how the Galaxy S5 compares to the improved Galaxy S7.

In February, the new Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge were released with a very similar look as the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but better in every way. Improved features, bigger battery options, a better camera, micro-SD card, and even IP68 water resistance. It offers everything a Galaxy S5 owner would want in their next phone.

The Galaxy S5 is getting a little old, and the Galaxy S7 now has many of the same features that made the Galaxy S5 so popular to begin with. With that in mind, this comparison will let buyers or those seeking an upgrade know what to expect. Here we’ll be examining everything that makes the Galaxy S7 a worthy successor.

Galaxy-s7-back

Of course the Galaxy S7 will be a better phone than the Galaxy S5, simply because nearly two years later there has been significant advances in technology. The Galaxy S6 was a worthy upgrade, but many chose not to take that route as they wanted to keep their micro-SD cards, the IP67 dust and water-resistant features, or have a removable battery. All things that went missing from the S6 in 2015.

Well, we have good news. On February 21st Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S7 with a similar yet improved design, a bigger 5.5-inch Galaxy S7 Edge, longer battery life, a new camera, and two key features Galaxy S5 owners are going to absolutely love.

Galaxy S7 Release Date

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge were officially released on March 11th, but many buyers received them early. Now, a little over a month later, they’re both available from nearly and and all carriers or sources throughout the United States. In March most with the Galaxy S5 were still under contract, but now that it’s mid-April we’re seeing millions of Galaxy S5 owners looking for their next phone.

Buyers have a lot of choices right now. From the Galaxy S7, a bigger Galaxy S7 Edge with a huge battery, the modular LG G5, or even the HTC 10. Most likely Samsung users want to stick with Samsung, unless the Lollipop update made you curse the Galaxy S5 and Samsung forever. That said, the Galaxy S7 is a great phone that performs excellent, and here’s our full review.

Galaxy S7 Design

As you all know by now, the Galaxy S7 looks very similar to the Galaxy S6 from last year. There are a few very subtle changes, as well as a rounded curve to the back edges to make it easier to hold, and feel thinner in the hand. Compared to the Galaxy S5 though, it’s leaps and bounds better. The Galaxy S5 is all plastic, and has big bezels to make it durable. The Galaxy S7 is all glass and metal, sleek, and a much more premium smartphone in every way.

Galaxy S7 (left) vs Galaxy S6 (Right)

In general the Galaxy S7 still looks rather similar to the Galaxy S5, but that’s a good thing. Samsung’s managed to improve every aspect, add a metal design, improve the internals, camera, and add a bigger battery while keeping their design language and identity in-tact.

Samsung kept the same 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD S-AMOLED display for the Galaxy S7, and increased the Galaxy S7 Edge to 5.5-inches for those that want a bigger display. The Galaxy S5 only came in one size, and for those who enjoyed it, the Galaxy S7 is perfect. If you want something bigger, consider the Galaxy S7 Edge. The S5 only had a 1080p HD display, while the Galaxy S7 has a Quad-HD resolution for stunning photos, video, games and Netflix. It looks a lot better.

Galaxy-S5-7

The biggest thing those with a Galaxy S5 need to know about the Galaxy S7 though, are that it’s more durable, lasts longer, and has a micro-SD slot again. Something that was sadly missing from the Galaxy S6.

This year the Galaxy S7 has an IP68 dust and water-resistant rating, higher than the Galaxy S5. At the same time there’s no flaps covering the ports, and no added thickness. It’s really impressive. Old Galaxy S5 users probably have lost the flap on bottom for water resistance too. That won’t be an issue with the Galaxy S7.

Samsung also returned the micro-SD slot, up to 200GB, and added a bigger battery. The Galaxy S5 was 2,800 mAh, and oddly the Galaxy S6 was only 2,550 mAh. This year it’s huge, coming in at 3,000 mAh with fast charging. Here’s more info on the specs for those curious. The Galaxy S7 Edge is even bigger, at 3,600 mAh for the battery. It lasts plenty long, and far longer than the Galaxy S5.

Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S5: Specs

Being two years newer you can expect a better experience across the board. Everything is faster, better, and improved. Including the battery life. Here are the official numbers right from Samsung.

Galaxy S7 Specs

  • 5.1-inch 2560 x 1440 Quad-HD Display (5.5-inch Galaxy S7 Edge)
  • 8-Core Qualcomm 820 Processor with 4GB of RAM (Samsung Exynos outside the US)
  • 32 GB of storage and Micro-SD for storage expansion.
  • New 12 “Dual Pixel” Rear Camera with f/1.7 aperture, OIS and more
  • 3,000 mAh battery with Fast Charging, Wireless Fast Charging (3,600 on Galaxy S7 Edge)
  • Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with TouchWiz
  • Fingerprint Scanner for security
  • IP68 Dust & Water Resistance (5 meters for over 30 minutes)
  • Flat Design (no camera bulge)
  • more

As you can see above, the Samsung Galaxy S7 sounds pretty good. It has an improved 5.1-inch Quad-HD display, and returns many of the features Samsung ditched on the Galaxy S6. Powered by a new Quad-core processor with 4GB of RAM, tons of storage, and return the micro-SD slot that made so many pass on the Galaxy S6. If that’s why you kept the Galaxy S5, feel confident in getting the new S7 or S7 Edge.

Galaxy-S5-Review-10-620x413

Galaxy S5 Specs

  • 5.1-inch 1920 x 1080p HD AMOLED Display
  • Quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM
  • 16/32GB of storage with a micro-SD slot for expansion
  • Currently on Android 5.1 Lollipop
  • 16 Megapixel camera, 2MP front camera
  • 2,800 mAh battery (removable) with QC 1.0 technology.
  • Swipe-based fingerprint scanner
  • IP67 dust and water resistant (flap covered USB port)
  • more

As you can see the Galaxy S7 is a huge upgrade across the board. A lot more power with the new processor and 4GB of RAM, the latest Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow software, a bigger 3,000 mAh battery with Quick Charge, wireless charging, and even fast wireless charging. The S5 takes nearly two hours to recharge, while the Galaxy S7 will recharge from 0-100% in under 90 minutes, and go from 0-50% in just 25 minutes using Quick Charge 2.0 technology, or Adaptive Fast Charging. That’s big. This means it lasts forever, and recharges so fast that users won’t even need to worry about swapping out the battery when it runs out. Just drop it on the charger for a few minutes driving home. Not having a removable battery really isn’t as big of an issue as it was in 2014.

Galaxy S7 vs Galaxy S5: Camera

The only “lower” spec on a sheet while comparing the two is the 12 megapixel camera. However, the new camera in the Galaxy S7 takes amazing photos and video whether indoors or outdoors, has optical image stabilization, a fast f/1.7 aperture for fast shutter speeds and auto focus. Megapixels aren’t everything, and this 12 megapixel “Dual Pixel” camera will be far better than the old 16 megapixel camera on the Galaxy S5.

Galaxy-S5-6

Samsung’s using technology found in many DSLR cameras. The Dual Pixel sensor is a first for any smartphone. It uses all 12 million pixels to auto-focus, while most only use about 5% of the pixels to focus, which is why it’s so slow. It also has a fast f/1.7 aperture and a sensor that’s much bigger and captures over 95% more light in less time, than the Galaxy S5. Add image stabilization and photos or video will be incredible. Indoors, outdoors, at night, and more will all be impressive.

If the Galaxy S5 camera isn’t doing good enough anymore, you’ll want Samsung’s new phone. And that 2 megapixel front camera is awful. Samsung’s Galaxy S7 has an excellent 5 megapixel f/1.7 wide-angle front camera that takes quick and perfect selfies.

Galaxy S7 Battery Life

The Galaxy S5 had a decent 2,800 mAh battery and first generation Quick Charge 1.0, which let it recharge in around 2-3 hours. The battery also lasted for a decently long time too. However, in two years a lot has changed. The screen, processor, and software are all more efficient, meaning the same 2,800 mAh battery would last longer. But Samsung added a bigger one, faster charging technology, and even fast wireless charging.

As we said above, Samsung completely fixed any battery complaints people had about the Galaxy S6, which may have caused some S5 owners to skip it. With a huge 3,000 mAh battery and 3,600 in the Galaxy S7 Edge, these should last longer than any Samsung Galaxy S to date.

Galaxy-s7-edgeALL

The Galaxy S7 has Quick Charging, which recharges the phone from 0-50% in less than 25 minutes, and fully recharges in about 80-90 minutes. Samsung also employed a similar Fast Wireless Charging technology as the Galaxy Note 5.

Carriers, Pricing and More

The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge were released on March 11th, and are pretty expensive. However there are great Galaxy S7 deals floating around, payment plans, or even 2-year contracts.

Carriers no longer offer the Galaxy S5, as it’s rather old, and even the S6 is hard to find from some carriers. And while that’s a decent phone too, the S7 is the best of both worlds. The stunning design, with all the features users loved about the Galaxy S5, and more.

Galaxy-S7-vs-S6-back

The Galaxy S5 was $199 with a new 2-year contract and only had 16GB of internal storage and cost over $500 new. Things have changed since then and the base is 32GB and most carriers have monthly payment plans instead of contract. If your two-year Galaxy S5 contract is almost up, most carriers will be more than happy to switch owners over to the newest model. Buy one today at any of the carriers mentioned below.

Samsung or carriers are currently charging $680 (or so) for the regular S7 and the S7 Edge is $760 or more. Sprint is asking the least, while AT&T is cheaper on a month-to-month basis. Make your choice.

  • AT&T: Galaxy S7 is $23.17 per month for 30 months = $695.10
  • Verizon: Galaxy S7 is $28 per month for 24 months = $672
  • T-Mobile: Galaxy S7 is $27.91 per month for 24 months = $669.84
  • Sprint: Galaxy S7 is $27.09 per month for 24 months = $650.16
  • US Cellular: Galaxy S7 is $28 per month for 24 months = $672

The Edge model is only a few dollars more per month from each carrier, which ends up putting the total price a little over $750 for Samsung’s new 5.5-inch flagship water-resistant smartphone. This is the option we’d recommend most buyers take, if the size isn’t an issue.

At the end of the day all Galaxy S5 owners really need to know is that the Galaxy S7 will be a worthy replacement. It’s better in every way, shape or form, has excellent battery life and super fast charging. With a better screen and premium IP68 rated design, stunning camera, micro-SD and a big battery, it’s more than you’ll need and looks to already be one of the best phones of the year.

Much better than the s6, but without a removable battery, I won’t be getting one, my money will be going to a company that that gives me the features I want/need!

The only reason my S5 works right now is because I was able to replace the battery. It was caught in a constant boot loop unless plugged into the wall. Took it to AT&T and went through Samsung support, both of whom told me it was bricked and I would need to buy a new phone. On a hunch I swapped out the battery and it works like new again.

I pay $9/month on total coverage phone insurance. This means that if anything like that happens to my phone, or if i lose it or the screen breaks, anything at all, I get it replaced immediately with a new one. That sense of comfort is well with the extra money to me, and i won’t have to worry about the battery of the 7 copping out. If it did it will be taken care of.

Yes but with that total coverage they only send you a refurbished phone..not a brand new one! Been there & done that. Won’t spend a $100+ a year just to get a used phone.

Thats no true. Volume control function is described in the phone manual, everything no oficial told here ordenador That we can check personally semestre funny. The truth is That The companies pay for a controlled caducity ( 2 years ). This is país against uses, and no enough beca use we could change The battery ourselves, next step is to make a more difficult removable battery. This is a no easy functionally Mobile Phone. And why They are promoting lack of security deleting The MHL connection? .

not being able to remove the battery is a terrible feature for many reason but the most important is….PRIVACY.

Just do a Net search for ‘Remote Cell Phone Camera Activation’ and you will find a toll that will allow you to remotely turn on the Mic & Camera of any cell phone even when powered off, just needs to have a charge.

The Feds have used this as remote bugging and was forced into open in court case

Does the S7 have a USB flap cover like the S5? My S5 flap cover broke off within a month after purchasing the phone and the vendor, Verizon, had no way to replace it! This is a failure on their part.

My S5 charging flap cover broke after I had the phone for about 6 months. I found one on Amazon for (insanely) cheap, and replaced it myself. Very, very easy. But you do have to be careful when removing the old broken piece; there is a small waterproof membrane that you’ll want to keep in tact. YouTube has tons of videos on this. Hope this helps.

What do you mean by usb2 and usb3 ? What is that ?

    • Chris Lenga

      02/23/2016 at 9:01 pm

Camera is actually higher spec because of the dual pixel. What Jean means by usb is usb 3.0 is about ten times faster than 2.0 in terms of speed. When it comes to phones, 2.0 and 3.0 aren’t overly important with most things so I won’t worry too much about this.

    • Ben

    • Mex5150

      02/24/2016 at 8:51 am

Well that’s two times more than you’d be able to with a fixed battery. It would take me only two or three days to do the same. With fixed batteries you loose the ability to use the phone it its fullest potential, with removable batteries you loose nothing, if you don’t need to change it, then don’t, but if you do the potential is there.

After about 15 month, the S5 start to have a problem, the screen turn off, non of the buttons include the power button work, so I can’t use the phone unless the battery is taken out and put back in, not sure they can resolved this issue with an fixed battery.

I have the S5. I wanted the new note, but it didn’t have a removable battery or SD slot, and wasn’t water proof, so I didn’t bother getting it. The S7 edge has solved the main concerns there (minus battery removal) so I am on board to get that. I wanted the note, but there is no guarantee it will have an SD slot and I don’t want to wait until November or so to get it. The 7 looks awesome, I had a sneak peek tonight. The battery issues and over heating should be resolved with this new model and I am looking forward to a camera that works great in low light. To make matters even better Samsung is giving away a free 64 GB SD card and their new Samsung Gear VR with 6 free virtual reality games! March 11th cannot come fast enough for this year!

I originally went from Galaxy S3 to Galaxy S5 and then seeing how painful my experience was under S5 (mostly battery), I went ahead and ditched S5 for S6. Hasn’t been a bad phone honestly. Probably will pre-order the phone, just haven’t decided if I want to go the edge route or not this time.

The S5 is a more than sufficient phone for 95% of the people. I see not reason to change except for maybe the camera improvements in the S7. But a smartphone camera will never replace regular moderately priced digital camera. So, why bother.

I own a Galaxy S5 and wasn’t too excited when the S6 came out (no expandable memory). I was ready to update my phone and have already pre-ordered the Galaxy S7 Edge. I am really excited with the improved features (battery life, camera, etc). My husband has an S4 and was ready to upgrade to Note 5 but waited to see what S7 would be like. He too pre-ordered a Galaxy S7 Edge.

So what’s the big deal about non-removable battery? I used my SG5 extensively for two years and never needed to remove the battery. I am going to upgrade. The improved camera alone is totally worth it.

If you are just a light user and don’t need the safety net of a removable battery, good for you, many of us do not fit into this group though. If a phone has a removable battery, both groups can make use of the phone, however if it has a fixed battery a large group of people are excluded (I really am at a loss to understand why some companies this deliberately putting off potential customers is a good idea, but instead they just want to copy apple)

Another issue battery has only a life of around 2 years after that the charge starts to slow down ,so will that mean it will need to be returned to have it changed ? If so I too will hold on to the S5

  26. Oscar

    02/27/2016 at 9:23 pm

    Serious issue
As battery is not removable in S7.
what happens after say 2 years when battery needs replacing ?
    With s5 it’s easy .
Also there can be freeze issues only solved by removing battery .
Please does anyone have the answer ?

The S7 sounds amazing and I am seriously thinking of pre ordering one. Besides I will not be able to hold on to my S5 much longer as I suppose Samsung will no longer support it. Eventually it will slow down and become useless.

    • Mex5150

      02/28/2016 at 2:22 am

Why do you think you need Samsung support to use a phone? Even if that was an issue, you get far better support (and for far longer) at XDA anyway

    02/28/2016 at 1:53 pm

Although the focus on the camera might be a bit better and the battery might last a little longer on the S7, but it does not have the “wow” factor. You can flash an S5 with Marshmallow and be better off. Besides, if my battery dies on the S5, I can pop in a new one. Bottom line for me: stick with the S5 until they really come out with a lot of major improvements. Holding out for the S8.

    02/28/2016 at 6:13 pm

I got the S5 2 years ago after saying goodbye to the iPhone once and for all. Most important was removable battery and expandable storage. A year and a half after getting my S5, the battery wasn’t lasting as long, so I swapped it out with a new one. To my surprise, the new one was no improvement. Turns out it was security software (MobileIron) that was draining my battery and not age wear! Therefore, because I try to upgrade my phone every two years anyways my opinion is that the original battery should last just fine with no degradation over that time. Lack of removable battery will not stop me from getting the S7.

I’m torn. While I love the aspect of the removable battery & being able to pop in a SPARE vs. carrying my charger, I’m getting sick of the 2GB of ram with my S5. In fact, that 4GB of ram with the S7 sounds heavenly but not having a removable battery, just trades in one problem in for another. :(

S8, please don’t fail us. Would still love to WIN an S7 though. :)

    @mex5150

Dude, your face and your relentless attack on the non removal battery is really bothering me for some reason. Just let people be stoked about a phone. If you don’t like it, keep using the type/style that works for you. From what I gather you like removal batteries.. Well because you can remove them. You’re not really stating any real beneficial reasons aside from if the phone ever crashes. I have zero clue as to what you’re doing so damn intense that you’d need to remove your battery every few days. But I’m thinking it rhymes with corn. Soo.. Might want to chill on that.

    • astounded

      03/02/2016 at 2:50 am

+1 i agree ….. mex r an idiot. removables are gone for ever, the cost you spend buying a swappable, buy a power cell pack to recharge, 15 mins and your done till you get to a power point, 20mins later your done for another day, …. fast charge is replacing swappables and its brilliant ! ….s7 is the best so far, if any 1 thinks otherwise there idiots as well.

      saying how it is .

    • Mex5150

      03/02/2016 at 8:55 am

You seem be be rather confused by what I’m saying, I have not once advocated a removable battery for rebooting the phone, and I don’t recall ever having to reboot my phone in that way. What I’m actually saying is A) batteries do wear out, if you have a removable one it’s a damn sight easier to fix the device than if you need to crack the case and unsolder/resolder. And B) I carry a couple of charged batteries in my wallet, they are small and light (unlike the bulky battery charger packs others recommend), and my phone goes from zero to 100% in the second or two it takes me to flip the back off. (unlike having to have a brick hanging off the phone for quarter of an hour or longer while it charges). As I have pointed out if you never want to remove the battery, having a removable battery does you no harm, the same can’t be said for the other way around. All I’ll say on the Ad Hominem attack is, at least I’m brave enough to show my face!

      • Jacqueline

        03/10/2016 at 2:05 pm

I totally agree with you. I carry an extra battery for the same reason. The rechargeable battery pack is bulky, it takes seconds to change. I will wait and see what happens till the next S… PHONE

Alli, but what about that ONE TIME you needed to remove the battery? I’ve had to do it more than once, but hopefully the S7 has that new feature you mentioned … to override the need to remove battery,

          • alli3388

            03/10/2016 at 3:03 pm

That one time was before I knew how to reboot without removing the battery. ;)
Really, I don’t think this battery issue will be an issue. And as mentioned before, there are always insurance options. If you get something like that, it doesn’t matter what happens to your phone – you can get it replaced if it stops working anyhow! :)

Damn people are useless and they seem to running low on battery power associated in the brain slowly but surely. Batteries are made for pennies overseas, they crap out due to various conditions. Hello it’s a battery not magic! Yes you have insurance BUT that insurance is no good to you after 2 years and BINGO guess when your non removeable square thing will not hold a charge or you then pay more than the phone is worth for maybe have taken in for bypass surgery to hopefully replace it at your cost and watch it wither away slowly in its old age. The profits are high on cells, and the companies want you to replace the phone asap and toss it. $$$$$$. I am still with S4 samsung with a beautiful removeable which I had to do shortly after 2 yrs .. surprise…and I like to keep a spare to pop in as needed. I will NOT go to a non removeable waist of money cell unless you plan to buy shortly after again and again…yes they want that disposable aspect of cells too. Wake up

I have a S5 with 2 back up batteries and usually carry one with me if it’s going to be a long day out on the go. I’m glad the S7 will last longer and charge quicker, but it’s just more convenient to swap a battery and be done with it. I may upgrade for the camera, but am disappointed in the lack of removable battery. Hey Samsung it doesn’t need to be thinner at the cost of not being able to change batteries. Everything else sounds great on the S7. However Motorola’s new Droid is supposed to have 48hr battery life. Where were you on that one! I’ve had Samsungs my last 3 phones because I felt they were superior to all the others. Please don’t go 2 steps forward and 1 step back!

    03/01/2016 at 3:18 pm

I’m like so many others; held onto my S5 due to the battery and micro SD. Now that they’ve fixed the storage, I may upgrade. I’d rather be able to replace the battery, but I’ve had this S5 for a couple years now and may have had an issue once where i removed the battery. Not sure if it could have been fixed any other way – just a quick fix but as stated earlier here, all it take is once. Maybe Samsung will listen to the consumer(s) and include the removable battery on the 8.

The main (only) problem I have with my S5 is lack of memory. I constantly receive a message “not enough storage” even though I have as many apps as possible moved to my SD card and moved all photos, videos, music & other files to the SD card. I routinely go through and clear out the cache to free up space. I don’t understand why I keep getting this message even though SD card is only 30% full. A lot of the apps can’t be moved to the SD card (move to SD card shaded out) and some apps reload into phones memory at updates which forces user to go back and move manually. Drag.

    • Christopher Cook

      03/02/2016 at 10:48 pm

Oh I forgot a couple things. 1. Craddman download 360 Security and you can free up some memory on your S5. Also why eliminate the IR so I can’t use my phone as tv remote anymore? My girlfriend always loses her remotes so it’s nice to use my phone when I go over instead of searching all over for her remote. In conclusion: Put the IR back in and add a removable battery and you have a perfect phone that has only gotten better since the S5. I would love to buy another Samsung with no regrets!

        03/29/2016 at 11:38 pm

Agreed, and add MHL, HDMI and give Americans 128GB onboard memory instead of 32GB, I mean 24GB because of bloatware.
If Samsung would do that the iPhone would be suffering major sales damage. But Samsung is just dangling the Cash Carrot by giving a couple upgrades at a time.

I don’t use a phone that much and I love my S5. The better camera, increased speed, increased storage with the ability to add more storage is just great. But,I just think it’s better to be able to change the battery for whatever reason there may be,especialy if battery goes bad and you need a new one. Just buy a new one and replace it.If the battery goes bad on a phone with an irreplaceable one, you’re screwed.

  45. Edmonton Road Rats

    03/05/2016 at 5:37 pm

I use my Galaxy S5 as a dash cam, you can see the results at Edmonton Road Rats – YouTube.
My must haves in a phone are:

    1. Camera: Must have excellent video capability especially in low light conditions. Based on the S7 specs ONLY, it would appear that the S7’s rear camera should be better than the S5. I will test the S7 to confirm this once it’s in our stores. The 5mp megapixel front camera is a definite improvement for selfie’s taken on the S5 are pretty crappy so I never use the front camera.

    2. Expandable memory: Great that the S7 brought back the micro SD slot. I would not even consider a phone that did not offer expandable memory. i.e. the S6.

    3. Removable battery: Sorry Samsung. This is a double must have. I always have a second charged battery for my S5 so I never miss a video or photo op event. It is also easier to change out a defective battery rather than having to replace an entire phone resulting in lost data.

Conclusion: With respect, and much disappointment, I can not see myself upgrading my S5 to the S7.

I have a S5 It is a great phone the removable baterry is the quiekest way to recharge it has 90 per cent of the features of the s7 the most razonable and unrazonable thing is the finish of the phone but let me make a question after you buy the phone what is the inmediate thing you buy the plastic case cover and the screen protector when you catch the phone you will feel plastic or plastic is really the finish really important it is makillage and when you need to make a replacement of a broken part the plastic is a lot cheaper than the gorila glass,The feel is a telephone is really so important.

MHL on older Samsung models made it possible to connect your phone or tablet directly to a monitor with an HDMI cable without the need for a wireless network using an MHL adapter to HDMI connection allowing you the ability to use your phone on a large screen for video conferencing, movies, gaming and collaboration. It is a big deal as WiFi is not always available (in many cases for security concerns) and a must have for my needs and will be a deal breaker for me if not included. It is sad to see Samsung’s continued suppression of this feature on newer models as it forces me to find alternatives.

I preordererd mine on the 23rd… I finally get it tomorrow (March 8th)…. I can’t wait… I have a S5 right now, got it when it came out in 2014. It’s been a great phone but I want the new one….. I cracked my screen in Dec, I could have gotten the S6 but decided to file a claim and wait for the S7… Waiting for it to come in….

All these complaints about the battery. I’ve had my S5 over 2 years, and never once had to remove the battery. Never once did it overheat. Never once did it freeze. I use it constantly, all day, every day and never a problem. Even the charging was never a problem except for a few apps I installed, but uninstalled immediately upon finding they drained the battery and weren’t necessary.

People saying that the camera is better on the S5, you need to do some research, because that’s false.

The big deal about the removable battery is that sometimes when the phone is messing up and turning it re-starting it doesn’t work, removing the batter for a few minutes does the trick.

    • alli3388

      03/10/2016 at 10:59 am

But doing that isn’t necessary, as has been mentioned several times in this thread. That particular concern is actually a non-issue. I don’t care if people don’t get the damn thing, but it’s hard to see so many people misinformed when it comes to the implication of a non-removeable battery in the S7.

  54. Jane

    03/09/2016 at 4:02 pm

That didn’t make sense (wish I could delete). What I meant to say is that the big deal about the removable battery is that sometimes when the phone is messing up, restarting doesn’t work. Removing the battery in that case sometimes solves the problem.

    • alli3388

      03/10/2016 at 10:09 am

Okay julian, we get it. You really love MHL/DHMI capabilities. Not everyone cares about that. I personally didn’t even know what it was until you brought it up. I’m perfectly happy using Chromecast with my phone instead, as I’m not a gamer.
I am personally really excited about this phone! Since smartphones came along, I have always use Samsung, and have always been very happy with them (currently have the S5, and it has served me well since 2014. Before that I has the Nexus S). It is definitely true, however, that they don’t last forever as far as smooth function goes. After 2 years or so they start lagging (so far, anyway. Maybe the S7 will be better). BUT that has been okay for me, since I always take advantage of upgrade deals each time I renew my 2 year contract, so I don’t actually need a phone to work perfectly beyond that. If people aren’t so willing to upgrade that regularly, I understand why they wouldn’t go with Samsung phones.

        03/10/2016 at 10:27 am

Yes , MHL / HDMI is a great too. Chromecast too, but 25€ / 30$ more expensive & is out ofrece my celular instead S5 MHL that is inside. MHL is not 100% secure but 1.000.000 % secure, any wireless could be hacked.
Then … S7 is a lo if more exoensive firma les security & less tools, poor battery abillity, less camera resolution … I beg your pardon, only The Phone body is prettier. … but not. … all my finge prints stay over firma The eternity.

    • alli3388

      03/10/2016 at 10:11 am

Oh, and as for the non-removeable battery… I don’t care. I read that Samsung has built the S7 (and S6) to avoid the need to remove the battery if the phone freezes for some reason. This seems like a non-issue to me. Of course, if a person likes to carry a spare battery with them I can understand the concern… but these things also have wireless charging. Instead of carrying an extra battery just carry a charging mat instead. I really don’t get why this bothers some people so much.

Just give us a removeable battery until there is a good reason not to. Oh by the way ,its time to get onboard with the USB-C port that I hear is coming. one port universal to all products.

    • alli3388

      03/10/2016 at 10:27 am

With wireless charging, and therefore no real need to carry a spare battery, I’m still unclear as to why people are so against a non-removeable battery. In two years with the S5 I think I had to remove my battery once because it froze, and that was probably just because I was too impatient to let it work itself out. Apparently the S7s also have some kind of feature that makes having to remove the battery to fix freezing totally unnecessary.

The only reason your S5 is charging so fast is because the battery doesn’t hold as much juice anymore. So yeah, it reaches 100% faster, but it also drains faster. Sounds like the S7’s battery will be a LOT better.

I had an S6 Edge last year, but I hated it for several reasonsand returned it after a few days. My biggest complaint was that I could not use the phone and Internet at the same time. Had this changed with the S7? If not, I don’t want it either!

The main reason I’d prefer to have a removable battery is that the only way to disable a phone’s GPS tracking ability is to remove the battery. I would like to have the option of disabling the tracking beacon built into all smartphones. That’s why all new phones are switching to fixed batteries. Always able to be located!

Removable battery is a big thing for me!
I carry an extra battery when going out on trips where i wont have means to charge it!. when my battery dies i just pop in fresh one in under a minute, and there 100% battery life!. heck you could buy couple of s5 batteries cheap on ebay and have them all charged up and take witu. use your phone as flashlight in an emergency.
i don’t understand the fast charging and wireless charging bs. I charge my S5 battery to 100% in an hour! with the original cable but a 5v 2.0Amp wall plug(it came with my jbl portable speakers). ;P

The only reason someone would want to upgrade to the S7 edge is because of the better quality camera and the good looks.

The problem with non removable battery is not the fact that it can’t be removed but the support from the company… If you have an iphone and the battery goes dead Apple replace the phone at no charge because they designed the phone with a non replaceable battery… Now if Samsung offered the same level of service then maybe the non replaceable battery would not be an issue.

I’m sorry but the best feature they lost was the dual antenna. It allows you to talk, text, and surf the Web all at the same time. This was a feature they had over apple and many users had this feature in high demand. I’m nit sure if they know that I phones can only text, talk, and surf the Web at the same time with AT&T because it they have that feature exclusuvely. Samsung would win the market over by keeping this feature. It’s a must have for me I will not upgrade until the dual antennas are brought back.

I work with PCs, and being able to connect my S5 to the PC via USB and then connect my S5 to the business’/home owner’s wireless router, thereby making my phone into a wireless adapter able to connect to 5G was a feature that I loved and is sadly missing from the S7, which is why I still have not “upgraded.”

  71. malopezmx

    08/14/2016 at 10:42 pm

Of course the S7 is newer, so it is faster and prettier. But most reviews fail to mention the features in the S5 that the S6/S7 do not have. These missing features are a deal breaker for many people:
    – S6/S7 don’t have MHL support. MHL allows you to connect your phone to any HDMI TV through a small adapter. The S7 offers an alternative in a wireless control for 2015 or newer Samsung TVs and other latest models with Miracast capability. Not as universal as the MHL which works with any TV with an HDMI connector.
    – S6/S7 don’t have an IR blaster (and no alternative either). Big slip here. This allows you to control all the appliances (TVs, aircons, and others) around your home from your phone. Besides the Peel app in the S5 can be personalized, includes the TV guide and remembers your favourite TV programming.
    – S6/S7 lack a replaceable battery.
    – S6 is not waterproof.
    – S6 does not have micro-SD card slot.
    – S5 used USB3 which is way faster than USB2.
Other users have commented on other issues like the dual antenna. In my opinion the S5 is the best phone Samsung has ever produced. Let’s hope with the S8 the bring back some of the goodies.

    08/22/2016 at 5:28 pm

I currently have the S5. I like the specs of the S7 but it bothers me when companies make throw away products. A cell phone without a removable battery is meant to last 2 years, maybe 3 if you are lucky. There always will be newer technology but I think I should be able to decide if I want to upgrade my phone to take advantage of it or not.

In my mind, it would be no different than buying a car new with a battery that could not be changed. You just run it until the battery dies then replace the entire car because a service item failed. Just a thought…

  73. Mike

    10/02/2016 at 4:12 pm

I agree with most people, the no removable battery is a problem, the no mhl is a problem, the no dual antenna is a problem, the no ir blaster is a problem, i think too many problems! Samsung is gettjng more like apple by making expensive throw aways. Hmmmm maybe apple is better choice. I have s5 and was hoping to upgrade, but no way will i go backwards and s7 is definitely not going forward. I will wait for s8 and if they have not fixed the problems then i will look at other manufacturers. Sorry samsung but in today’s market taking too much away will kill your business.

With this review what they don’t tell you is by doing the upgrade to the s7. Everything is amazing with it except the biggest flaw of all. You lose data usage while on your phone. You no longer can text or access Internet while on a phone call. So no more looking up things, or opening texts while on important calls.

The reason is because unlike what they let you believe it’s not a duel attena so it doesn’t support 4g data on calls.
