Wow, these little guys look great!! I backup to a large HD on my local PC, but having something more PORTABLE would be GREAT!

I'm a digital photographer and a graphic designer. I currently have all my photos and projects from the past few years stored on multiple CDs and my husband's old 80MB External HD. I could really use my own, larger one to store everything so I can fin it when I need it!

I have a portable external hard drive but I don't often use it for backup enough of the time.

I'm religious about backing up but there is a hole in my strategy that the Seagate FreeAgent Desk would fill. My current FreeAgent drive is used to back up the work PC and is stored off-site at home (in case of fire, theft, etc. at work). However, I don't have site diversity for backups of the home PC, which another drive would fulfill.

My backup HD was a 150GB Seagate in a Newegg enclosure, but my main hard drive failed a few months ago so my "backup" became my main. Unfortunately, I only backed up files instead of an entire disc image, so I had to lose my files to install the OS. My dead drive is in the enclosure now, acting as a paperweight.

External HDD but running low on space…would love a portable GO HDD for xmas.

Right now I have no back up for my files. I have lost them all before but luckily i had saved some of my pictures on a DVD so i was able to recover half of them until the DVD stopped working for some reason. I have new pictures now and I would really love to have an external hard drive so I don't lose all my files again.

I'm currently using Time Machine to an ancient 280 GB FW drive for my MacBook. My home server backs up to a 750GB version of that same Free Agent drive over USB. The drive does eSata, but I haven't put an eSata card in the machine yet.

I back up my critical work documents on a SD card and on box.net.
A portable HDD would allow me to have a ghost image of my entire hard drive in addition to my smaller critical backups.

My current backup system is actually a combination of two approaches.

The first approach is concerned with backing up current projects. For this I use Dropbox. I simply put current project materials, which are organized in different workspace folders, inside my Dropbox folder. This way, as I work on the project materials that I have, Dropbox immediately syncs all the changes that I've made (as well as keeping track of the history of all the revisions, in case I would want to revert to a previous version of a certain document) onto a remote server. It's very convenient because I don't even have to think about backing up any of the files – Dropbox kindly takes care of that for me while it's working in the background; also, this simplifies syncing between my Tower PC and my Tablet into simple matter of turning the computer on and going online. The fact that it is relatively easy to share folders with my coworkers (collaboration made easy!), and that Dropbox Sync works fairly well with TrueCrypt containers are very big pluses. I also use SyncToy to echo my Dropbox folder onto a 4GB flash drive, in case the Internet Fails (hey, it could happen).

The second approach is concerned with backing up non-current material, for instance from past projects, and private files. For my work documents I use 7-zip to compress unwieldy sets of folders into tiny (or at least tinier) archives; I have to do this regularly lately as I only have a relatively small-ish external drive (120 GB). For the sake of playing it safe, I also upload important files onto various online backup services (ex. ADrive, Skydrive, etc.). Personal files, like photos, my OneNote sribbles, my (juvenile) ArtRage Paintings (which are conveniently stored in a TrueCrypt container) are echoed to the same external hardrive using SyncToy.

I would love, love, LOVE to have the FreeAgent drives – wow, BOTH! – because they would allow me the luxury of not having to spend too much time agonizing about how to free up space in my poor, filled-to-the-brim, 120 GB drive! I'd make my old 120GB the default medium for my private files, and the 500 GB (*drool*) FreeAgent Go would become the home of all of my past projects. With all that room, I'll have no qualms about installing another OS in there (or a handful of OSes), in case my primary Windows Install quits on me. And the one Terabyte Drive? No more 7-zip-ing (which, while wonderfully useful is unfortunately quite time and resource consuming) for a while! I'll just copy everything there, no questions asked! It's also big enough to serve as a repository for all the softwares-on-DVD that I have – I'll just make ISO copies and mount them virtually from the FreeAgent Desk. The luxury of having redundant copies with no doubt allow me to sleep easier at night.

I use SyncToy to get my 500 gb internal to sync to my 500 gb external. I need another to archive the current external so the lightning bolts dont get it. I NEED this drive to save my kids pictures…!!!!!

  12. Kevin

    11/27/2008 at 1:55 am

Currently I use an Acomdata 160GB external hard drive. I use SyncToy to back up the files from tablet pc. My current external drive is not portable and is lacking in size. The SeaGate external drive would suit my needs perfectly right now.

My backup is still done with a 40 GB Usb 1 drive. I am limited to only backing up data, so either of these drives would be a huge step forward.

I have some thumb drives around with stuff everywhere – can't be sure what is what or where i'd go if i actually needed it. have some stuff up on google docs, some stuff up on shutterfly, some stuff here, some stuff there… would be great if i had all stuff backed up in 1 spot where i could find it all :-)

I try to backup the 5 PCs in our house regularly. The USB drive allows me to store those backups away from the computes. I do complete backups as opposed to incremental and need the added space to maintain 2 of each.

More backups equal more security. You can never have too many, and Seagate is a great brand.

I backup using Acronis True Image sometimes via network to my NAS directly, sometimes with my external HDD.

Would love to have much bigger storage of course =)

  18. Sumocat

    11/27/2008 at 2:27 am

Cool contest. My current backup system consists of using Acronis True Image to save drive images to my network attached Buffalo LinkStation Live. It's working for me, but I'd like to free up that space for media. The FreeAgent Desk would definitely allow me to do that, while the FreeAgent Go would act as my redundant media backup and, if need be, travel library.

I currently backup my data via a script(s) using robocopy. I backup to a second internal hard drive in my primary pc. While this is handy for data on my primary pc it means I have to backup across my network when using my notebook. I've been considering using an external USB drive for backups for some time now. I could easily swap the drive from PC to PC when needed without affecting the performance of the network or the primary pc. It would also provide the ability to recover data quickly when on the road or away from home.

Currently, i have 80Gb hard drive desktop and i only have few gb left when ever i want to put something in it i have to delete some stuff of from hard drive. Right now i don't have any backup hard drive so i don't back up anything. My brother want one external hard drive so he can take with him to college because we don't have laptop so it would be great if i have that hard drive.

I currently use a western digital passport drive every month or so. I've also got several older files on diskettes and CDs. I don't believe my other family members back up thier data which is problematic.

Well, I do try to archive photos to CD or DVD, but I really need something better for backup.

I backup to a 250 External Drive once a blue moon…and that doesn't account for other computers on the network.
My home computer is a Mac, but the wife and I also use PC's (Tablet and UMPC), so ANYTHING is better than nothing.

  27. Mario Filipe

    11/27/2008 at 3:34 am

Guess I'll try my luck on this giveaway also.
My current backup consists of a three-layer system. My main computer consists of a tablet and I usually carry with me a portable harddrive (actually it's my old laptop drive that I replaced and bought an enclosure for it) to which I frequently backup my documents and pictures. At least once a week I synchronize all my documents and pics to my old desktop computer drive (which pretty much just works as a kind of NAS). Then every couple of months I make DVD backups of all the important stuff, label them with the date, file them and hope I'll never need them.

  28. Regac

    11/27/2008 at 3:39 am

    Hey,
I am a student and work for my university preparing lectures and tutorials regarding many subjects besides which I am media junkie. Right now I have a 250 drive that actually has 12MB left on it.
Now for the back up system:
Since they don't let me use my laptop while working I have to use their computers, which are actually the ones that are no longer suitable to be used in class so what I've done is set up a scheduled task that runs four hours that copies the whole folder with the preparations that I've done for the current trimester. When I come in in the morning I would turn on the computer and do my thing until lunch time by when the scheduled task activates and starts copying the folder. It is not large but has many files so takes a long time. Then later in the day the professors would make revisions and additions and the task would activate 4 hours later and by the time I come the thing is copied and ready for me to take and improve the designs and such.
As for my home backup, I have a weekly task that again copies my whole school folder to the drive.
Unfortunately this leaves absolutely no space for the media and it has not been once that I've lost almost all of the media.

Anyways, that is it. It worked so far. Its a good system the only problem is lack of space.
    Regards

SmartSync Pro to a small external USB drive–when it is connected, which isn't often enough since I also use it to hold utilities and install sources. Like too many others here, it is too small to handle the backups from my computer, let alone all the other stuff…

I use mozy's free edition, an 80 Gig external hd, and Adrive. If I won this prize package, I would continue using mozy for my daily documents that change daily, but I could finally have a backup solution for all my "stuff" that is quick and easy without the need to pick and chose what I want to keep or delete because I don't have enough space.

  32. Andrew

    11/27/2008 at 3:58 am

I don't have much of a backup system. I copy all of the important files between my desktop and my lapto so that there's a copy on both machines.

  33. Mario Filipe

    11/27/2008 at 4:10 am

Oops, forgot to mention how this prize package would help me, although it should be somewhat obvious… I need more space!!! I accumulate ever increasing amounts of data, and my portable hd is only 160 gigs and my desktop computer a meager 320 gigs (how things have changed, to think that my first PC had a 20 Megabyte HD, and I never ran out of space). As a side note I'm also thinking of adding a fourth-layer to my setup, online backup of the most important documents, though I've been too busy (accumulating even more stuff) to check the best options available.

My scenario at this moments, is when you realize that you have a lot of precious memories in photos, videos, etc.. and you are about to loose them… thats because my three main computers are not avaible anymore (at least 1 of them): My Imac its in repair service since 5 months ago, my home pc it's also in service repair for video issues, and my Mac Book Pro was stolen!!!!… At this moment i only have my Photos on the web and on my IPhone : (… I really hope to get them back soon… Anyone with kids will know what i'm suffering at this moment, since all my important photos and videos are from my litle baby!!!!

While I do have backup for the main computer (Mac's TimeMachine), the laptop, which holds most of my husband's school papers and flight records, has no backup plan. So I would be incredibly happy to have a backup for the laptop … and probably a backup for the backup :D

I had my laptop stolen over last Thanksgiving. All of my family photos and document were gone. I’m still realizing how many photos are missing.

I don’t want this to ever happen again, neither does she!

My current backup strategy is to save important things on more than one machine, but I don't have a good, centralized system in place. I sorely need one.

  39. Mike

I back up to an external HD that's too big to transport and needs an external power cable.

    11/27/2008 at 5:31 am

As time progresses and computing before ever more intensive, my UMPC is starting to have a hard time handling the task of being my main PC. As misfortune would have it, my family's desktop computer (which has much more power than my family uses it for) was having some issues. When I went to re-install the OS, I discovered that the SATA controller must have failed. They needed a functioning computer so I backed up their files onto secondary internal drive and stuck it in an old desktop that isn't very powerful, but had the power to do what the rest of my family needed a computer to do.

To make a long story short… I pulled out an old 15GB IDE HDD and put XP on it, and I'm now using a powerful (compared to my UMPC) desktop as my main computer, but it only has 15GB of storage (minus the space that the OS takes). This is due to the SATA controller failing, and I am unable to use the desktops original 80GB SATA HDD. This is a bad situation because I was running very close to the limit of capacity on my UMPC which gave me about 20GB of space (after the OS and the recovery partition).

So, my current backup situation is that I don't really have one. I essentially lost an 80GB drive, and had to spread the other internal drives out across this desktop and my family's desktop. A spacious USB drive would be really convenient because it would allow me to consolidate the data from all the work I've done on my UMPC, and be able to utilize that on the desktop that I'm now using.

    11/27/2008 at 5:31 am

I really don't have a backup system. I am relying on my internal hard drive to store my very large amount of files. I could use a new hard drive.

I'm a law student on a budget which means I have my MacBook and a few DVDRs scattered around from random backups. If I had a crash, I'd lose years of papers, music, and photos.

My current system of back up is a simpledrive 250GB External HD. It is just about completely full. I also recently built a Windows Home Server with 1TB of HD space, I plan on adding my simpledrive to it to expand on it. With this Seagate drive I could add that and run some form of RAID to ensure better backup or increased storage space for my needs.

  46. David

I currently have a portable drive that I use to backup my files on a daily basis. I have a 1TB WD at home to backup everything once a week. I have a redundant 1TB just in case.

  47. Jack Chen

    11/27/2008 at 5:47 am

My current backup plan is just one external portable 120GB HD. My MacBook's drive is also 120GB and almost filled to the brim with family photos, address book contacts of friends and family. My external is almost filled as well and I would love to consolidate all my data into one bigger drive.

  48. Chris

    11/27/2008 at 5:52 am

I have a 120gig and 250gig drive that I try to use as backup for my X61 and Dell tower. The 120 is full and since we bought a HD video recorder. I have tons of duplicats and need a bigger drive to keep things in one place.

  49. Chad_W_Smith

    11/27/2008 at 5:52 am

I am on Mac OS X, so I have used Time Machine to get a base copy of my system, and then I just manually back up new important files to an external hard drive that is dangerously close to full. Having a TB would take care of that problem, and the 500 portable would make my Eee PC much more useful!

  50. Jonathan

    11/27/2008 at 5:53 am

Current backup scenario is to enter as many hard drive giveaways as I can until I win, then start backing up. Pretty poor plan considering I lost a ton of data due to a fire a couple of weeks ago.

  51. Daniel

    11/27/2008 at 5:55 am

Well I… don't back up. At all.

So I'd really wager this would help me quite a bit.

  52. MacTipper

    11/27/2008 at 6:00 am

My current backup plan is to buy a hard drive when I finally have the money for one.

But, if I had a hard drive (or two from winning this contest. ;) ) then I would use Time Machine to backup my computer.

I would use the second one for backup of video footage.

Like so many others here, my backup solution is sadly lacking (and I know better too as I'm studying to go into IT). I back up my school papers onto my iPod and FTP some of my other important/irreplaceable/crucial documents in a private folder on the server I have my website on. I'd really like to have a huge hard drive to back up all my systems to, but I'm just a poor student :'( It would really make my day if I won one (hint hint) ;)

    11/27/2008 at 6:04 am

I lost my entire harddrive- without backups- in 2004 on my old iMac G5 (first gen! didn’t even have a webcam). Shortly after that I cloned my drive every few months(!) to an external drive as I couldn’t really afford a external drive bigger than my internal.

Nowadays I backup an image of my documents/photos/movies folder every week to a 1TB TeraStation NAS. The images are encrypted with PGP Desktop before storage as anyone who wardrives into my Wifi would be able to login to the TeraStation (they have really, really crappy access control). Incremental backups of my Documents folder is done hourly to the 50gb Backup user provided by my webhost. The method of my upload is simple: SFTP via Expandrive so that it’s mounted as a disk.

P.S.- My webhost, Dreamhost, provides a 50gb amount of diskspace entirely for personal use that isn’t redundantly backed up by them. They provide you with 5tb of overall bandwidth so I don’t think I’ll ever run past that. On top of that reliable (in my experience!) hosting with a huge (500gb) of disk space all for $10 a month.

    11/27/2008 at 6:14 am

I use a Windows Home Server EX475 made by HP for backups, which run automatically nightly between 2am and 6am. Unfortunately, this doesn't work for FAT32 partitions, so for the couple of those, I use a Maxtor external HDD with Retrospect to backup.

How would winning help me? Well, the WHS is gradually filling up and could use some external USB or eSata storage. And the Go would be useful for taking to my Mom's to help her back up. Since all my mobile PCs are backed up to the WHS whenever they're online at home, the Go drive would primarily help Mom.

I currently have only a small capacity LaCie drive for my backup. It's several years old, is not large enough for all the A/V data in the family, and makes some clanky noises from time to time so I really don't feel good about it. My back up is currently running on Apple's Time Machine, and without a larger capacity I have to exclude much of my data on the available drive.

Currently: I do not backup at all.
With this Package: I'm a high school student. I have years of my work and very important personal items. Receiving this would give me a sense of protection, and set up a beneficial habit that will help me throughout college and for the distant future.

  65. Marc

    11/27/2008 at 6:50 am

Wow a free hard drive, that would be way better than doing backup on dvd. In fact, I've done only one, cause it took me way more time than I imagined. If something goes wrong, I'll loose all my recent data. Of course, with that drive my backups would be on one physical media, it would take me less time to do it and I'll do it more often.

My current backup: use the backup program coming together with my Lenovo X61T. I create a system task to backup every week on Saturday. The only pity is that since my external drive is space limited (320G), I will have to delete my previous backup from time to time. If I can get this Drive, it will save me some pain of deleting my backup points. So I REALLY want it!

My current backup situation is a mostly reliable External 500GB eSata I slapped together on my budget (massively in-debt college student).

Having a reliable setup with the proper amount of space to Vault my 35,000+ photographs I will need after school is really the cornerstone to my success!!!

I have a backup harddrive for my laptop only. However, I am a filmmaker and all of my videos have abosolutely no backup whatsoever. I am making a documentary and if that harddrive failed I would lose 6 months of my life!

I have multiple backup strategies depending on the file type. Here goes:

Movies – various smallish hard drives attached to my DVR and burnt to DVDs.

Images – 1 copy on desktop, 1 copy on OQO, 1 copy split over USB memory.

Music – 1 copy on desktop, 1 copy on Media PC, 1 copy on various DVDs.

Docs and other data – 1 copy on desktop, 1 copy on OQO, some on Nokia E90.

I know it sounds like a mess and it is. I've been meaning to buy an extra large hard drive to consolidate it all but real life keeps swallowing what little money I have. Can you guess how this prize package would help me? :)

I currently have a 500 GB WD My Book with about 20gb free, i generally do backups of the OS with acronis true image home and manual back ups of my files every couple weeks. Considering trying a raid setup with my next external HD purchase.

I'm using a USB 2.0 Western Digital 250GB Mybook External HDD connected to my Linksys WRTSL54GS. It's now down to a little over 16gb Free so it would be great to be able to upgrade to a much better HDD so as to really take advantage of the media streaming functions of my router.

I have this little usb stick where I back up super important files but have thousands of files, songs, pics that I copied from my old mac to new one so I haven't thrown out the old mac since it essentially backs up 90% of my files. Any new files on the new mac, oh well, I need to win…

I have an external hard-drive that I used to use with Genie Backup Manager and Acronis….Now with Sherweb for my email and calendars and Sugarsync for everything else….I'm backed up in the cloud.

  75. Jon Garner-Harris

    11/27/2008 at 8:06 am

I've been using SugarSync for a little while to keep my desktop and tablet PC in sync, this also provides me with a way to access files when I'm away from home. Unfortunately, I live a few miles out of town and for some reason our phone line here isn't broadband capable, so I access the internet through a community wireless project which is, at times, flaky to say the least.
I'm concerned about my "backup strategy" for a number of reasons; what do I do if I can no longer pay for SugarSync (I already have to make a decision about which data plan I'm using) or worse yet the company folds? How can I reliably backup ALL my data rather than choosing what is important (it's all important to me)? How can I keep my backups portable, accessible and permanent?
Large amounts of physical storage seems to be the answer – I can still use SugarSync for syncing but I'd have a reliable backup medium I can take with me that contains all my data.

    11/27/2008 at 8:26 am

Currently I have an old 80GB desktop hard disk conected to my home router that I use as an FTP and Samba server. I back up my tablet data to this disk and then distribute the most important stuff(mostly documents and source code) to my destop pc(and the other way around). I also have 2 old 80GB hard drives (stored in a closet) that I use to "permanently" back important data.

I could really use a small external hard drive that I could carry with me on the go. Lost a lot of data about a month ago when on a trip to my parents house. It would have been great to have a have a hard disk that I could rely on.

  78. Gras Jeroen

Free disks? That what I need! For now I do sometimes a backup, but that's a simple disk image. That's too simple, but it works.

    11/27/2008 at 8:52 am

Current Back Scenario? Supposedly every 3 months buy some DVDs and back up. But you know how consistent you can be with that plan. A hard drive bundle would make things much easier.

My current backup is a 1TB external drive that is not easy to move around my apartment to back up my tablet using Lenovo's R&R. I would enjoy a nice portable drive to back up my machine weekly with, as having import school documents must always have a backup. Having a AVHCD 1080p camcorder requires a lot of space to backup my home videos and future projects. Having too much memory for backups is never possible. It is always good to have dedicated backups for each machine, and having a travel for the tablet and one for the desktop will be a nice upgrade to my current setup.

    11/27/2008 at 9:25 am

Current: I really don't backup much of anything. I have some XDrive account from when I reformatted a laptop last year, but that's it.
How it would help: Some good room would be nice, I keep uninstalling and removing things around here very often. Would be nice to have backups of all my music/notes on something other then the computer they originated on :)

I have a 160gb seagate external drive I use with Time Machine on my Mac notebook, its great but it can only back up so much before it starts deleting older files.
1TB would be great for Time Machine we could use it with all our macs!

  83. Ken

    11/27/2008 at 9:46 am

I had several external HDDs (WD, Seagate, and some others). It can never go wrong with more backup just in case some things went wrong with computer or if you are traveling without a computer.

    11/27/2008 at 10:36 am

I use Mozy to backup my files offsite, but if I have a hard drive crash, it would take weeks to download all the media files to my computer. The Seagate drives will allow me to have a quick local restore.

Currently I have a small external drive that has been meeting my needs — however I have taken on a family project of scanning and cataloging old family photos (there are thousands of them), and having a backup drive like the one on offer would make this a lot easier.

Right now I have 256 GB hard drive that I use in conjunction with Time Machine in Mac OS X. It's partitioned so I actually only have half of that for backup. With these new hard drives I could keep a longer history of backups as well as take important files with me.

  92. Ashley

    11/27/2008 at 11:49 am

I don't have a regular back-up procedure. The only time I will explicitly back-up data is if I need to reimage my computer. This presents difficulty as my largest external hard disk drive is only 40GB, and is usually full of other data anyway.

My current technique is to utilize the gigabit LAN connection on my laptop, as well as that of another's with sufficient hard disk space to house my data. I then backup my necessary data over this networked connection. Once done, I reimage my computer, and then recopy the files back via the same gigabit line. Granted, I'm only using CAT5 cable, so it's not gigabit speeds. I'm merely making use of the fact that gigabit doesn't necessarily need a cross-over cable under certain implementations.

A 1TB external hard disk drive would make this process a lot easier by me not having to go around finding a friend or relative who has a laptop with sufficient disk space for me to use as a temporary storage place. Even if I run into data problems at 3AM in the morning, I can resolve it myself this way.

I have a portable hard drive smaller than my tablet hard drive. I have to think about space issue on every backup. It shouldn't have to be difficult right? A 500 gb will make it very easy to backup and take my backups with me.

    11/27/2008 at 12:24 pm

my current back up scenario is…none existant. :( Kinda sucks, and I"ve been meaning to back up my HDD sometime, but never got around to it. 96. David

My current backup solution is Live Mesh, from my tablet to my work PC. An external drive would make it much easier to recover files, plus would stop me having to pick and choose files because of the 5GB limit. It would also be good for plugging into the xbox 360 for watching movies and playing music :)

  97. Adlan Z

    11/27/2008 at 12:38 pm

My current backup scenario is basicly taking up a lot of space both in my X61t and also in my seriously small external HDD… n my method is "Copy and Paste".. haha… doing this not only take lots of time, it also takes my X61t's performance and also cause the external HDD to be very defragmanted…

How is this going to help me? Lost, firstly it will give me lots of extra space not just for my backup, also for the things i love :) pictures, music and movies!!! haha… Also coz i'm the type who will be always moving around places, the feature of the FreeAgent will be a breath of freash air for my lifestyle and mobility! ( no more cut and paste!!!!) haha!

    11/27/2008 at 12:50 pm

My backup strategy consists of a reminder string tied to one finger and on the other hand crossing two fingers. These Seagate drives would definitely make it much easier (and more frequent) for me to back up my Tecra M4. And i could store more pics on it. I would keep these units at my workstation so that it would be available from my docking station and backup on a regular schedule.

I don't really have a good backup plan. I put the most important things I need on a 2 gb flashdrive so yeah… I could really use this. I have so many important files on my computer and if something were to happen to them I would probably get fired (I have work-related stuff on there).

At the moment I currenly backup to a 120GB external hard drive, but I’m very close to having no free space. (I’ve only got 1GB left), I also backup very important documents to windows live SkyDrive so that I know the document is in at least three different locations (one of them in the cloud) at a time.

  108. Wilson

    11/28/2008 at 6:01 am

I currently back up my documents and other important files on my usb and on my google docs account. In the past, I have stored things such as photos on cds, but that takes a lot of time and preparation. With an external hard drive, I could easy sync a folder, such as my pictures folder, to the drive so they would be safe if any thing happens to my computer. I would also be nice to carry important files that would not fit in my usb around in a separate location for backup. :)

  109. Nathan Day

    11/28/2008 at 6:14 am

My current backup scenario is nearly nonexistent, with the possible exception of two thumb drives. I have two flash drives I carry with my Mac, for backing up a handful of files. They're kind of like infinitesimally scaled down versions of the ones offered here. Instead of having 1 TB and 500 GB's of space, I have 1 GB and 500 MB.

These drives would help me immensely, as I need portability and a home base drive. My parents are divorced so I switch homes every weekend and I have high school events to deal with (I'm sort of the go-to guy for all things digital). I move around often so portability is imperative, yet a larger drive for mass storage and backup would be ideal because I am stationary enough to have a home base. Both of these drives are incredibly portable, which is a must, considering all of my computing possessions fit in a single laptop bag that is becoming quite crammed (laughably small backup flash drives, Wacom tablet, MacBook, power adapter, headphones). So, in short, thanks for the awesome opportunity, and have a happy holidays!

My backup scenario: I have 4 computers (2 tablets, media center, and ps3 running linux) that backed up to my NAS (hammer myshare 2tb). When I got outta the Marine Corp last month in the move back home, my wife opened the door to the car the NAS fell out and broke. So, I have no backup going for me. A few years back I lost pretty much of my schoolwork because I didn’t do any backups at all. Had a really hard time getting some of my work finished but I managed. Then I’ve had a few breakdowns on some computers which I didn’t care about.

After I lost all my schoolwork I ended up doing a lot of backups, right now I am using TimeMachine and rsync’ing data to my “server”. A few scripts on the server (an asus eee box, yes I want to sleep at night) uploads the most important data to Amazon S3 and the rest is put on an external drive (that is at the moment 95% full). This setup is quiet, fast and reliable. If one hard drive crashes the data is stored elsewhere.

I would like to have a Freegate to be able to do backups when I am out traveling or out photographing so my data would'nt be lost on my MacBook.

I’ve definitely lost some data before, back in the days when I did CD-R backups. Now I backup all important files to an external hard drive automatically with SyncBack, and have most (if not all) text files in the cloud with Google Docs. Keep copies of all my photos on Picasa Web Albums, videos on Youtube or Google Video, and for random other files I’ve tried online storage like box.net, and that and similar sites seem to work decently as well.

None of my music and videos are backed up though, on account of not having space on my computer. So these extra HDs would be excellent.

I was lucky for now (knocking on wood) and when my HDD failed several times I always was able to recover it’s content with some recovery software (even after formatting it!)…

I now bought a TabletPC and when i try to synchronize most of my improtant data between my PC/TPC/WM phone with Live Mesh and Dropbox I periodically have some data on my TPC which arent synchronized. Most of them are work related and it would be really bad if I lost them which is quite easy as normal notebook HDDs fail quite often and SSDs are too expensive as of now :(

My motherboard and then harddrive went out on my HP laptop for the third time in 2 years. The first time I lost a years worth of videos, resumes, music and other misc stuff. Since then I use my 2.0 GB flashdrive that is getting full. I basically have to pick & choose the things I'm backing up carefully, and use other software (CCC) to back up my iTunes library and large audio work projects. More external storage would make things a lot easier. I just haven't wanted to drop that kind of cash yet. /roll :)

I used to use a 250 a 350 along with a 500 gb drive. But it seems that when they're all going at once I get a write error. I could take the 500 and shift it to the 1tb then combine the the others deleting the duplicate files. Reducing my dpendency on 3 drive to1 while using the remainder for occasional backups.

Currently I back up my documents through gmail! It is crazy painful to upload all my important documents. I have over 320 MS Word files, 54 PowerPoint presentations, and over 1000 images and music files :)

  149. Wendy

    11/29/2008 at 2:57 am

I want to use Time Machine on my Mac, but my files have outgrown my small external drive. The FreeAgent would give me the space I need to safeguard my work.

  150. Susan Chester

    11/29/2008 at 3:15 am

I honestly don't use anything, I know I should, but I'm clueless! This would help me to save my music and precious photos.

  153. rebecca snodgrass

I do broadcast graphics for sporting events. This requires that i carry a hard drive with me for back up and storage. I bought a 250g 3.5" which requries a power connection. It worked great and was plenty big enough when i bought it 3 years ago. Now though i find it is limiting because of its size and then need for power. This drive is bigger and can run off bus power which makes things so much easier. Plus i can use it easily while on a plane travling.

    11/29/2008 at 3:43 am

I just recently lost some important files for school when a virus got into my computer. Now that it's fixed I always back up my data on thumb drives or external drives. This package would make it complete – I have some pretty big digital files for art classes!

I kind if don't have a back up plan. I have a 2 gig usb and have some stuff on cds but thats about it. But I wish I had something more reliable for my pictures.

  159. Carol G

    11/29/2008 at 4:29 am

I am very disorganized in backing up. A few things on CDs and some on thumb drives. Something external that I could do automatically would be great.

  160. Ethan Sisson

    11/29/2008 at 4:43 am

My current backup setup consists of mirroring my laptop's drive to an external (SuperDuper!) and backing it up to another external with Time Machine. The biggest way this prize would help is allowing me to use the portable drive to mirror my drive and store away from home.

  161. Paul d.

    11/29/2008 at 4:45 am

Backup? What's backup? Unless you consider a memory stick backup, I have none.

  162. tawnda

    11/29/2008 at 4:47 am

well… we don;t really have much backed up at all… unless you count a few things on a flash drive… this would be great

I've got no backup..one computer..teenager and wife importing all sorts of problematic data..my old dell xp isn't going to live for ever…its now or never….and goodbye to all that I saved before

  164. Vivian Deliz

    Thank you GBM..!!

Currently I Have no backup plan for my PC and laptop. Im living on the edge. Nothing of a disaster has happened before though! The most devastating thing will be losing around 10 Gb of VITAL DOCUMENTS, 60 GB of my Pictures and about 40 GB of music. This prize package is going to to definitely help me reorganize my data and will help in keeping my data secure for once in my life ;)

My wishes are with everyone else too but hope i win!

  171. David

    11/29/2008 at 5:04 am

At the moment I don't have a backup. I'm getting more and more worried that I'll lose my critical data, though, as my computer gets older. This prize package would help me because I could finally sleep soundly at night knowing that my data was safe :) I truly do not want to lose my data — again — especially my photography. Backups are so important – with this prize package, I can finally take advantage of this little computing miracle :)

  172. Brenda

    11/29/2008 at 5:50 am

I'm a Virgo, so of course I backed up my old computer. I back up the replacement computer. But I don't know how long I'll have the replacement computer. Winning this would simplify any scenario. I like to have back ups on back ups.

  173. Kayce C

    11/29/2008 at 5:51 am

  185. Trish

  186. Katherine D.

    11/29/2008 at 8:31 am

  187. Randy

  189. Julie

Current plan: not much of one. Sporadic CD back ups.
This would be great to help save our pictures.

  190. Aaron Bretveld

    11/29/2008 at 9:55 am

Right now, I really don't have much of a backup solution at all. Occasionally I will write some things to a DVD for backup purposes, but I am usually too lazy to do even that. If I had an external drive like this, I would actually be able to back up stuff easily.

  191. Lori Downs

    11/29/2008 at 10:10 am

My husband keeps stealing my external gard drive, so If I won one he wouldnt be able to do that, when he takes mine it si filled with my itunes and pics and I cant access them!

  192. Mary G.

    11/29/2008 at 10:15 am

I have one back up drive, but can always use more space to back up files: pictures, music, downloads!

  193. pinoycontests

    11/29/2008 at 10:42 am

My current back up scenario is emailing my files to my gmail account every once in a while. This prize package will help me make my life more organized and less tedious, giving me the peace of mind and security with the knowledge that all of my files are a-OK!

  194. David Bertolo

    11/29/2008 at 10:43 am

  197. Carol Lawrence

right now I have 2, 500 gig hard drives, and a 200 gig hard dives in my pc , I am almost full I need more room. Not to mention be nice to have a place to back up everything to.

  199. Michael Brown

    11/29/2008 at 11:36 am

As an IT professional I am a huge advocate for my customers to backup their data. As an IT professional none of the scenarios where data loss occurs could NEVER happen to me, right? So I don't backup. Winning the drives would allow me to be a good example for my customers.

  200. Cynthia C

    11/29/2008 at 5:00 am

I have no backup. Thanks for the giveaway.

  201. antonio salerno

    11/29/2008 at 12:03 pm

Right now I sync import files two a second drive inside my PC. An external drive would allow me to sync to an external device, which would be much easier to move to a new PC

  202. James Davidson

    11/29/2008 at 12:11 pm

Currently three of us have one small external drive that is pushing the limits of it's capacity, a new larger capacity drive would take care of the situation.

  203. Lynn H

    11/29/2008 at 12:27 pm

I do not have a very good backup system…no regular one anyway…it just takes too much time. Well, my computer crashed and I lost about 1 years of photos and ALL of of docs. I need an easier backup system like the Free Agent. I recently saw it on TV and I said that looks like something I should look into…It would be great if I won one. Thanks for the great giveaway!

  204. christopher h

for my really important pics, which is all i really care about anyway i back my stuff up with burned disks. i don't care for usb sticks. well that's how i am . i think that this would help me in that i can keep them separate from all my junk and that there isn't much chance of me breaking it.

  212. seifip

    11/29/2008 at 12:58 pm

I was lucky for now (knocking on wood) and when my HDD failed several times I always was able to recover it’s content with some recovery software (even after formatting it!)…

I now bought a TabletPC and when i try to synchronize most of my improtant data between my PC/TPC/WM phone with Live Mesh and Dropbox I periodically have some data on my TPC which arent synchronized. Most of them are work related and it owuld be really bad if I lost them which is quite easy as normal notebook HDDs fail quite often and SSDs are too expensive as of now :(

  213. Robert Craparo

    11/29/2008 at 5:47 pm

I have two small portable drives that I occasionally, but not regularly, use to back up the irreplaceable stuff. I’ve also copied some stuff to CD/DVDs. With 1 TB I could easily keep an up to date back up of everything.

  214. Kim

    11/30/2008 at 1:24 am

I back up partitions using an external drive, but that drive is used for data too and is pretty full. The sleek drive you are giving away would give me much needed space for backups.

  215. Justin

    11/30/2008 at 1:30 am

Don't have a back up, that's why I hope to win!

  216. George

    11/30/2008 at 1:34 am

Backup? Isn't that what the mirror is for? Seriously, I use mostly thumb drives for the stuff that goes back and forth and a couple of external drives. However I don't often do a full backup. The biggest challenge is keeping both the MAC and Windows sides backedup on my computer.

  217. Jamie Davis

    11/30/2008 at 2:24 am

I had one backup drive which was lost during a hurricane evacuation, so a new one would be fantastic.

  218. Elena

    11/30/2008 at 2:39 am

We have a couple of external hard drives but we aren't very regular about backing up onto them. Thanks for the great contest!

  220. Holly

  221. John Mizell

    11/30/2008 at 3:24 am

My computer just went out, so I'm putting together another one , I need some backup real bad, wish I had backed up my data before

  222. Sam

    11/30/2008 at 3:36 am

I have an 80GB FW400 that I do Time Machine backups on. I could use it to make a bootable copy and the new ones for a Time Machine backup, and to store media on.

  223. ralph mcgahagin

    11/30/2008 at 3:40 am

since i have no back up scenario this would help me start one

  224. Gary Weller

  225. jeanne

    11/30/2008 at 4:02 am

My husband and I share an external hard drive, which is a recipe for disaster. Let's just say, it would be easier if we each had our own back up solution.

  226. Connie K.

    11/30/2008 at 4:20 am

I do not currently have a backup plan. That is why I am crying at this moment because my hard drive crashed just today losing hundreds of pictures and my money program. Winning this would allow me to back up those many files that are so valuable to me.

  227. simone

    11/30/2008 at 4:36 am

I currently use Carbonite and a backup internal hard drive, but I don't have any plan for my laptop. This would help me back up those files. Thanks!

  228. Jeffrey Beckett

    11/30/2008 at 4:36 am

I have one small external disk that I back up to irregularly. This would help me to have enough room and to make a more realistic backup plan.

  229. Glenn Peterson

    11/30/2008 at 4:49 am

Currently, I backup using a USB drive, but the size is too small for my needs. I need a bigger storage device. Seagate is the leaer in storage devices. I NEVER had a problem with any of their products.

  230. aquart

    11/30/2008 at 4:53 am

My pathetic backup consists of two 2-Gb flash drives. And a box of 100 Mb Zip disks.

    wow

  232. Adam

    11/30/2008 at 5:09 am

A few thumbdrives and DVDs here and there. Really foolish, since I'm a graphic artist. With this I'd finally be able to format my c:/d: drives and clear out some old garbage.

  233. Terri D

I use 2 8gb flash drives that I back up all my important data to such as pictures, some songs, word docs, and the like, they are with be all the time . If i won this external hd i would actually take the time to make sure that every thing is backed up in a secure fashion.

  246. paul haddock

    11/30/2008 at 11:01 am

I have lost my data 4 times this year alone. just paid Best Buy $200 to get my data back aftrr the last crash

  247. Raymond Calla

    11/30/2008 at 11:13 am

I keep all my backups on 1.4" floppies. I know, it's sad in this day and age of technology, but what can I say, I'm an ESL teacher (elementary school kids), and you know how well they pay our educators. When I'm not fiddling around with disks, I keep the rest of my data stored on my EEE-PC, a whopping 8GB of room to spare there (hey, that's a lot of floppies!)

One of these drives would let me actually store something bigger than a .doc file, maybe even a picture rich .pdf. That would be awesome.

  248. goodluckcadet

    11/30/2008 at 11:47 am

    current backup situation: memories. :(

how it would help me out: my memory is fading. :(

  253. Craig Sweeney

    11/30/2008 at 12:31 pm

I haven't had any backup as of yet and it is something I am actually looking into so this would work well. It's always nice to have a backup and I am sure it would prevent a backlash from family members if I were to lose everything.

  255. Mike

    11/30/2008 at 12:48 pm

I currently backup to a NAS device, which is nice, but not portable. This prize would allow me some flexibility to be able to easily move my important data offsite to ensure its safety.

Wow, I could really use this. I have a collection of video, audio files and other files and the cd/dvd isn't working. This would be an instant organizational tool and would really fast access.

My current backup scenario is just burning the occasional dvd-r once I've accumulated a large amount of files on my laptop drive. Not great, but it's worked well enough so far. Sucks when I'm trying to find something specific though.

I back up my financial data to a diskette about once a month. I occasionally back some things up to a thumb drive, but those are only temporary saves. At least once a year, I burn all my important data onto a CD.

It would be a lot more convenient to back up my data and therefore, I would back it up more often. I'd be less at risk of losing my data and I'd have a sharp new gadget to enjoy.

My current backup situation: my iPod…yea I put photos and important school essays and papers on it. This would DEFINITELY help me to have a more reliable place to store my word and powerpoint projects for years so I can reference them after I graduate! Also, I would like to store all my photos from going out and to places with my friends.

I currently have no back up scenario, which is bad because I like to mess around with the software on my lappy a little more than I probably should. When end up needing to reinstall the OS I end up borrowing a couple hundred gigs on my dad's Linux box. Having a portable hard drive would be a great asset in helping me to back up regularly.

Currently have one USB external drive for a direct backup, then I also backup periodically over the network to a computer at work and at home (not my school apartment). This drive will help ensure I have enough space for all the pictures I've been taking these days for my new photography hobby.

I recently had to run a recovery on this PC, which belongs to someone else — who kept saying, I should do something to back this up in case something happens. There are tons of pictures, huge quantities of music, and more documents than I care to think about. It took 30 CDs and 2 8gb flash drives to back up, and I didn't get all of it. This would be the answer!

My current backup scenario is: Hope to God nothing goes wrong!
Winning this would be a BIG help! The 1TB would be my Time Machine backup drive and the 500GB would take a lot of the strain off my internal HD by allowing me to offload my media files, rather than always having my internal on the brink of capacity.

i have a 250 GB external HDD, which I use to store a Vista image (saves tons of time), my personal info (very secret) and my movie and music collection. If I had the 1TB drive that would give me a whole new world of opportunities: home media server, extended backups, multiple Vista images, not to mention the ability to carry around and hook it up at any time any place!

    12/01/2008 at 11:56 am

    Hi,
first of all it's very nice that you make this contest.

At the moment I'm using a WHS but it doesn't have enough space. As I have to store a lot of files that I don't want to miss if something happens to my harddrives I duplicate most of the private files like documents, images, .. If I win I would attach the harddisk to my WHS so that no memories can get lost.

  294. Jessie W

    12/01/2008 at 12:19 pm

I do have something online but should something happen where I can't get online, which actually happened several months back, I'm in a spot of trouble. Backup a little closer to home would be nice.

  296. Vyk

    12/01/2008 at 12:58 pm

I currently use a Western Digital My Book World Edition II set in RAID 1 to back up much of my data. Out of the 930 gigs of space only 10 gigs remain at the moment… I bought a $10 IDE to USB adapter and started scavenging older drives (40 gigs here, 60 gigs there…) because of lack of space. Mostly I save media (Photos, family videos, favorites from recorded tv, music, etc) and school work (Maple programs, presentations, papers, textbooks, etc).

The FreeAgent Desk would allow me to back up more than 10gigs left on my WD My Book. FreeAgent Go would allow me to take all of my school work and favorite media with me to classes, libraries, back home, on travels, etc.
They would get much usage =)

  297. Grant

    12/01/2008 at 12:59 pm

I usually back up all of my important media to DVDs. All of my docs are either written with google docs, or backed up to a 1GB flash drive.

I wish I could create a system restore point on my computer, but currently the hard drive is just too small to do that. With the 1TB hard drive I wouldn't have this problem in a very, very, very, long time!

  298. Jaxim

    12/02/2008 at 1:52 am

I currently have my computer automatically backup my data to an internal harddrive. However there is some data that is too big to include in this backup.

I just bought a HD camcorder (Canon HF100). I bought it because I just became a new daddy and wanted to capture every waking moment of my daughter (in glorious high definition of course ;-)

I'm currently storing the video files on my hard drive but I have no way of backing up the files because my backup media is too small, so I need a drive like this Seagate drive to store all these memories. I'd be devastated if any of these video files were lost, especially the first video of my daughter, the video of her birth. Winning this hard drive would make me feel rest assured because I would finally be able to backup these files.

    12/02/2008 at 1:57 am

Between my wife and I we both use a 250 gig Iomega external hard drive. However due to its current space predicament (4 gigs left…) we have been thinking of buying another. (We're both avid photographers so space is important!) Now money is a problem. To top that off my wife's Macbook hard drive just up and died for who knows what reason. So at this point we are looking for an external hard drive AND an internal one!

  300. Jarrod

    12/02/2008 at 1:59 am

I actually have an external hard drive, but haven't set it up yet for automatic backups. My biggest concern would be photos. I have thousands of them from over the years and both me and my wife would be devastated if we lost them. On top of that, my wife is pregnant and expecting in June, so I know at that time the camera is going to be snapping constantly and I'll probably start using my camcorder a lot more. Too many memories to leave it to chance.

    12/02/2008 at 2:26 am

I uh… Don't Back up my stuff, which is sad, because I've got a lot of original work on here that I don't want to lose. I was thinking about saving up for a while and getting money for an external hard drive, but I don't have the finances for it. I hope I win, I could really use this.

  302. David

    12/02/2008 at 2:37 am

I have a 120GB drive backing up my 200GB laptop. In other words, right now I have to be very selective of of what gets backed up. Oh, and I should probably mention that the drive has been dropped once. Still appears to be working, but I am not entirely confident in it.

    12/02/2008 at 3:03 am

    Hey Rob

This is a great giveway! It may give me the opportunity to change my backup plans. I have alot of precious family photos of grandparents e.t.c who have passed away over the years. At the moment im only backing up to Blank Discs which I know isnt really the best source of backing up. In the past ive went to restore the data from the discs to find the files corrupt. Ive heard off friends that a external hard drive is the best way to go. Id love to do that as it would make the process less stressful and save time. There is a good program called Sync Toy that lets people create backups automatically. If i was lucky enough to win id give that a go to see what its like and to make sure my data was secure and safe.

    Thanks once again Rob!

    Great giveaway — thanks!

My current backup strategy is to use CDs and DVDs; however, backing up to another hard drive just seems easier, so that's what I'd use one of these products for.

  310. Brent

    12/02/2008 at 4:11 am

Have you ever lost important data on your computer? Yep several times. Each time I said “I’ll never do that again.” And then do that again.

What happened and how do you backup your data now? I now do a monthly auto-backup using Acronis Tru-Image program but only for the essentials. I do an image of my OS drive always as well as a few of my very important ones. Others I just live on the edge ;)

  311. Dave

    12/02/2008 at 4:46 am

My only current means means of back-up is buring my files to CD or DVD, so this drive would sure come in handy! Thank you for the great give-away.

  312. Cindy Phillips

    12/02/2008 at 4:54 am

Currently I backup to DVD but don't do it as often as I should. This would help so much because of all the room and the ease of backing up to a drive, I could even mirror two drives for extra backup security. Nice, nice prize!

  313. Trinae_R

    12/02/2008 at 5:31 am

My current backup solution is using my linux server as a file repository, however, with all of the family pics, videos, archived magazines, and my art and writing projects (not to mention my music, and open source software) well, i am running out of space at an alarming rate. (i store what data i can as rar files to squeeze more in.)

Having the added hard drive space means that i can continue to back up my data without having to worry about deleting older, yet sentimental and useful stuff. It also will save me having to plunker down $$$ money during the holiday season when it can go to an extra gift or two for the kiddies.

  314. Steve

    12/02/2008 at 6:04 am

Current backups are put onto several sizes of external hard drives with important files duplicated onto all of them. Several are reaching fullness and you can never enough storage.

  315. Michael Hong

    12/02/2008 at 6:06 am

current scenario is all over the place, i have several smaller hard drives overflowing with unorganized data. winning this would give me some elbow room to move stuff around and get it all organized and then finally setup a real backup system. fingers crossed!

Today I'm backing up to my old iPod.
Tomorrow I hope to have an SSD and put all the big data (music, videos) on an external HDD.

I have mostly pictures on CDs, and more pictures and video on DVDs. I also have some of my pictures on two on-line sites. Some of the rest of my stuff is on CD and DVD, but not very well organized, and definitely not well labeled.

I have a large collection of music and photos and also docs and pdfs. I am a blogger and hence there is a need to save all the blog posts. I tried to build an external usb hdd but that went bust for no apparent reason. I am a teacher and I use a lot of presentations and also download a lot of free material from the internet. The usb flash drives are not enough and the costs of having all these things on the cds and dvds is prohibitive. Not to mention, the time I spend everyday to search for the file that I need. So I need a Seagate Freeagent hdd very badly. It would save me a lot of time and money and improve my efficiency.

  320. Allan

    12/02/2008 at 7:45 am

I currently have a couple of ext HDs that I use, but they are not big enough to hold a computer image of my setup, so I am forced to pick and choose what "deserves" a backup. This extra space will ensure that I am properly protected.

  326. Kurt

    12/02/2008 at 10:57 am

Currently the file server has a external hard drive that it backs up to. However my wife's business computer contains irreplaceable photo and video content that is not housed on the file server, and is not currently backed up. If this data was lost it would represent a significant loss in potential revenue and advertising. The drive would back up her data.

    1. My current backup scenario :-
    ————————————————————
I have a Seagate 40GB portable external HDD (ST940801U2-RK).I know it's too small for backing up my main HDD's data on it.So, i'm currently writing/backing up the data of my HDDs on blank DVD-Rs & the rest on this porable drive.
    —————————————————————————————————————————————————————
    2. How this prize package would help you ?
    ————————————————————
This package would help me very nicely because i don't have a spacious external drive where i can back-up my data on.My 40 GB falls very short when i feel the need to back up 300+ GBs of data which resides on my desktop drives. If i would have got this package, i wouldn't have to buy several DVD-Rs to back-up the rest of the data.I also wouldn't have to search for any specific file from those huge piles of DVDs when it's needed.

  328. Paul

    12/02/2008 at 11:25 am

Current backup is manually copying important stuff over to my 32GB pen drive (hardened) and/or, for important stuff, storing it on my external LaCIE HDD (500GB). Unfortunately I store my vid projects on it and it's getting cramped…

    Very poor, I know… really need a help here…

just inherited an old G4 Cube from my dad, together with a 17-inch Apple ADC display. Storage is very low (80GB, already upgraded) and a FireWire drive would definitely extend this work of art a couple more years. I use it for some pet projects at school, but my macbook does most of the hard work. Backups are manual backups :(

also need a decent graphics card to power OS X, but that's another story entirely…

    12/02/2008 at 11:34 am

I would cry, a lot; my only back up is on the harddrive. Were i to win a pair of externals, it would be great. Besides the back up capabilities I could use one as primary storage for my ebook library and the other as backup, and clear our hardrive for other things.

I lost my resume (just finished updating it, and hadn’t sent it out yet) along with a bunch of photos of my best friends wedding after a power outage fried my power supply, which then took out my hard drive. It was a little disappointing. Now, I keep all of my pictures and important documents on my hard drive as well as thumb drives. This would go a long ways toward solving the problem of trying to figure out what files are on what thumb drive. I could put it all in one place.

  346. John Gunter

At the moment i use my web server for partial backup, the rest i use either my second internal HDD (when i format the first HDD which has the OS) and a pityfull 4GB flash usb stick.

If i win i surely will have the space to re-organize all my storage structure and of course help me a lot with transfer data between my two houses.

Currently; my data backup plan is by burning to DVD disc; The prize would really help me to save time waiting for the process to complete; it will help me locate backup data easily, I don’t have to search through piles to discs to locate and restore the data I wanted.

Right now I have 100GB Seagate that I back up to, but I cannot to a complete backup so I’m limited to just what I feel is really important. Everyone keeps telling me I need to get something else, but call me the procrastonator because I haven’t done it yet and I sure hope I don’t live to regret it.

My current backup is using Microsoft Mesh to do two things.

1- Synchronize my files (mainly school related) between my Tablet and my Desktop.
2- At the same time all those files are been synchronized with my online desktop on Mesh as well.

I don’t backup any other type of files since every school year I perform a fresh install of both my Desktop and Tablet. The reason is that I probably spend less time doing a fresh install than trying to clean up all the programs that gets added (for fun, school, or just to try them) throughout the year.

I am now using the Live Mesh as the main backup for most of my important files/folder, this is my first and the only online backup.
But for more safety, I got a backup on some urgent files into my USB Flash Drive. Sometimes I got a full backup for my files and folder in CD-R/DVD-R.
I am looking forward using external hard disk for backup, like the Seagate FreeAgent. :)

Hi before I start I want to tell you that I´m from El Salvador and I’m at Indianapolis on vacations buy I really like here so if I will try my best to make me clear, because my english isn´t perfect.

To tell the truth, I haven´t a backup scenario but I can tell you if something happens to my laptop, the first thing I would do is take it to some technician to see if he can at least recover my data.

How would this prize package help you?

I don’t have an actual backup system for everything. I do backup my important documents using my gmail account. My 4 gb Kingston pendrive also serves if I preplan a format.

  379. keithM

    12/04/2008 at 5:23 am

My current backup plan is this:
Firstly, a prayer to merciful Minerva that nothing will ever go wrong with my laptop and that it will never get stolen or damaged, despite the amount of travelling I do.
Secondly, if anything should ever go wrong, God forbid, I would check that all my music and photos are still on A-drive, where I deposited them for free several months ago and then completely forgot about. I would, of course, lose anything added to my laptop since I uploaded them, but there you go.
Thirdly, I would root out the DVDs to which I copied the same music and photos, just in case. I’m pretty sure I backed them up properly…Once again, anything added in the past half year would be lost.

So, I think I have most of the things that I would hate to lose backed up, even if it is in a rather half-arsed fashion. Whether I still have the registration numbers for various software I’m running, I couldn’t say for sure. Either way, it would be annoying to have to search out and download the relevant software that it has taken me a while to put together from various free offers. (I wonder where those registration numbers are?)

If I had a genuinely safe backup I would, for the first time in my life, do a Dell System Restore. I think I have accumulated so much trash over the years, both in the registry and everywhere else, that the thought of having my laptop back to its pristine condition is really very attractive. This time I would know how to look after it from the get-go, not like when I first got it. Until now I have never dared try a system restore, just in case something goes horribly wrong, A-Drive goes bust on the same day and my backup DVDs turn out to contain only error messages.

More than anything, having an external drive big enough to take not only a copy of the contents of my own laptop, but also perhaps a copy of my mum’s and girlfriend’s computers as well, would make me feel less nervous about my amateurish attempts to make either of them load in less than 20 minutes on startup.

I use a Windows Home Server for my primary backup. I made sure to use the “Duplication” feature to prevent data loss from a single disk failure. I also backup that to an external USB drive for offsite storage.

This prize would allow me to ensure that I have safe copy of my data. My current external drive is low on space, and I’ll have to either get a larger drive or be selective in my backups. I don’t want to be selective. It’s all important to me for one reason or another.

  381. Brian

I am responsible for ensuring that all of our data is backed up so that we can recover the system in the event of a natural disaster or system failure. I spent considerable time initially planning the backup strategy that would best meet our needs– in doing so,I think winning the prize will meet our demands regarding cost. Hard disks are generally readily available here in the Phils., yet the question is, the availability of some budget to purchase.
plus having a tera size would mean a lot, and we would no longer sacrifice with our 40Gig hard drives. I think our computer’s HD has bad sectors , making it irrepairable, thus keeping the corruptness coming back

I once lost a year’s worth of columns I had written (and was using to submit to syndicates), and all my resume and acting experience-related files! I had to go groveling to some publishers that had rejected my submissions recently enough that they still had them – one was kind enough to return my submission, but some writings were lost forever . . . I took my backup (tape) copy of my voice reel back into a studio for a new transfer. NOW all my stuff is on my PC Hard drive, on CD-ROM, AND on my (rapidly running out of room) Western Digital Hard Drive (250 GB seemed so large when I got it . . .)

    Oh lord, my backup scenario?

My backup scenario is my CD/DVD burner. Every program I have is on ISO format on DVDs (for larger storage), my music is all on CDs, and I have about 3 different boot disks for emergencies and new setups. That’s about as far as it gets for me; part of me is just old school, and part of me just doesn’t have the money to invest in other means.

At the moment we don’t really have a back-up situation.. we put pictures up online (in a couple different places, but it doesn’t really save at the right resolution.) I’m really afraid that we’ll have a crash at some point and lose a lot of home movies and pictures. I’ve lost hundreds of pictures the last time my drive crashed. I should really put this on my christmas wishlist.

I currently use a 320GB SimpleTech drive. Unfortunately it is a plug in Hard Drive and I have moved to using my tablet pc for nearly all my computing. The SimpleTech is not really portable and I do not backup my tablet pc regularly. I do back up my desktop when I use it. The FreeAgent Go would be a big boost to securing my tablet’s data and the FreeAgent Desk would give the extra space that I’m close to maxing out on the SimpleTech

I don’t have a backup and you would think I would have learned my lesson and made a backup of this computer system since my last computer repeatedly crashed and I lost documents, photos and music. If I were to win I would be able to save my important data and would have much less stress.

About 7 months ago my house burned down. Lost multiple PCs, Tablet PCs, 4 External 500GB HDs, 2 External 2.5″ HDs. Lost everything else in the house but what really hurt was all of my physical art, over 200 movies and the last 1 1/2 years of Art and File backups, because my new tablet pc had an old backup from the wrong External drive. Now made multiple backups on DVD of what I had on the Tablet and giving them to friends. Lesson – Dont keep backups at one house… :-( So getting started rebuilding my collections and having these drive would be a great help!

As a lecturer of finance, the most important data for me are the lecture slides, problem sets, quiz questions and their solutions, grades of my former students (in case they request me for a recommendation later). Equally critical for me are video recordings of lectures offered both by me and the faculty that I invite for guest lectures. Of these, the slides, questions and gradesheets are archived at the end of every course and mailed to my gmail account (and labeled appropriately for quick retrieval). I also carry these constantly on my 8GB Sandisk pendrive. Since uploading video lectures takes time and since they occupy too much of my precious disk space, I just cut CDs and hope that they don’t get scratched from multiple readings.

My personal data such as photos, financial data, I either upload them to my gmail account or cut CDs. I have long been thinking of getting a backup harddisk that would let me store everything at one central place and let me sleep easy. While I can store all my data – course archives, videos, photos, data – etc in the desktop storage solution, I can also carry the required course material and crucial personal stuff in the portable hard-disk.

I had been using carbon copy cloner on my imac every month or so, but started having problems when I was reaching the capacity of my internal drive and subsequently had hard drive failure. I was backing up my photos to DVD in batches but I think I may have lost some info. I would like to use the drives in conjunction with Time Machine to back up my data. (Still trying to come through my hard drive, errors and all, to see what files I need. What a pain!)

My current backup system, is a few 1 GB pendrives. Sadly, these are too small to hold all of my important pictures. These freeagent drives are much larger and would be able to hold nearly everything at once.

At the moment I backup my data on my integrated HDD in a separate partition, but this is not really save, as I know. With an optical drive I would have to store my data on many DVDs and search disc by disc for the needed data, what is not very efficient. Another point is, since I have no optical drive in my tablet an external HDD would be great to have and very helpfull. I could just plug the HDD in and work while data are still available and can be moved from one drive to the other, because this is not really possible
when doing a backup on your integrated HDD.

How bad it is to have no external HDD and lose almost all your data, I saw yesterday. My girlfriend called me suddenly and knew not what she could do, because she had a syncopal attack and after she came back to consciousness she realised that the coffee mug which she had had in her hand fall on her laptop when she faded away. After I asked her and knew that she had no physical pleasures, she worried about her laptop. So after I was really sure that she had no blessures, it was time to save what could be saved, but there was not much to do and we were and are very sad, thinking about all the data (pictures from holidays, here work and so on), that is no unavailable for all times. Not to mention that her laptop is also gone.

So I saw how important it is really to backup things and think more than before to get an external HDD and if I get one I will give it to my girlfriend and share it with her, so that she also can be safe in the future.

Just a few words in general.
All the times you read backups are important. To be true like often in live you say okay I have to backup my data, so I have no trouble in fact of an accident (like virus, physical damage etc.), but then if nothing happens you become a little bit carelessly, because there is so much to do.But do not do it, backup and be safe.

After all I really think now more than before that such an HDD is very nice and I think everybody should think about how helpful it is and what could be the worst case without it.

My current backup scenario is rather embarrassing…I’m still saving things to CDs. With the massive amount of data that I have, this poses somewhat of a problem. I have actually been planning to buy one of these, since I obviously should have one to avoid disaster, so if I won I would be absolutely thrilled! It would really help me save my data in a logical and comprehensive way.

I’m a writer, so the worst thing I could lose would be my word documents.

Thank you so much for this amazing giveaway!

I don’t have a backup system yet. I’ve got to save up for one of these cool 1TB hard drives. If I win one, I’ll be able to back up my business files (I just started my own business so if my data gets lost, I’m pretty much messed over), audio files, family photos, and school files (in case they try to take my diploma away). And I’d feel a lot better knowing all my data was a bit safer.

This is perfect! I own a small printing company, and we do a lot of typsetting and graphic design work for local businesses. For a few years now I’ve been relying on a back-up system my friend set up for me. I have three computers on a network and he set it up so PC1 dumps to PC2, PC2 dumps to PC3, and PC3 dumps to PC1. It’s a lot better than nothing, but the problem is, it’s so cumbersome. All of my hard drives are full and I have a million back-up CD’s that I have to dig through every time we need to make revisions to an older job. I’m sure you get the picture. This would make life so much easier!

What a great prize! I desperately need this for all the back-up our family has to do. Currently we back-up on dvds. We film all the variety shows at a children’s camp we volunteer at every year and our sons have done some short movie clips for a college film fest. We also have a lot of other things, including photos, we can’t afford to lose. This prize would give us the peace of mind that everything is safe!

I have a 200g external drive, but it’s too small, I have to pick and choose what I backup, 1Tb would sure give me room to grow…..

I currently use dvd’s and cd’s. This would be much more organized.

I curently copy files to a 512mb SD card and then move to my daughters hard drive…yeah pathetic huh?

    12/05/2008 at 1:27 pm

I try to copy from time to time all my pictures and important files to two other computers I have at home. I also burn some dvds just in case. With these Seagate drives I wouldn’t have to depend on those old computers I make those backups on. And I’ll be able to carry them everywhere so I never have to wait to make the backups.

Supposedly a DVD backup system. I am supposed to be backing up every few months. We all know how that goes.

A portable device will make things easier to schedule. And I can still always back up to DVDs when the time comes.

My current backup plan to my computer is inefficient at best. I do it manually but I do it usually when there’s some kind of computer scare or malfunction and then I remember I had better back some things up. I do it manually and usually put it on my desktop and then copy it to a disc. See what I mean about inefficient? This would be incredibly helpful to me to win the package!

I currently do not have any sort of back up, and I’m using an old laptop on it’s last legs, so a backup system would benefit me A LOT. Please count me in and thanks for the contest!

My current backup plan involves backing up my data to a 250GB external Seagate hard drive (but space is becoming limited :p) once a month (give or take).

I would love to win this prize, and feel it would help me as I am heading off to University next year and would love to have more room to backup photos and Uni work (seeing as how my current hard drive is almost out of space).

    12/05/2008 at 6:10 pm

Till now, the best thing to happen to my backup plan has been the availability of a DVD burner to do large-scale file-sub-system backups… But THIS would be the ultimate simplify-my-life and secure-my-system approach — come on, random number generator, make my day!!

What I know about our backup scheme for our household system is mostly that every once in awhile my husband sits down with a stack of blank DVDs, and then proceeds to pull his hair out while trying to keep track of what he HAS backed up when, and HASN’T gotten to yet… And he doesn’t have that much hair to spare (I didn’t say that). Luckily we practice safe browsing and have learned not to trust anything coming in via email, so we haven’t had to reformat and reload for a LONG time now. Knock on wood.

  453. Kathy Scott

Backup? What’s that? Oh yeah that is the reason that I lost all my photos.

  454. Kathryn Clark

I don’t have a backup system since I lost my ipod… eek! This looks like a really great solution!

  455. Kathryn

    12/05/2008 at 7:46 pm

I’m a graphic designer without a current backup system, so this would prevent me from pulling my hair out in the future when I lose files!

  456. Debra F

    12/05/2008 at 7:53 pm

    12/05/2008 at 8:16 pm

I have to restore two desktop computers at home starting from scratch which took almost 24 hours and all data lost. It would have been easier and faster have I had an external back-up especially when it’s 500gb or 1tb, wow! I edit videos which takes a lot of storage and this will be a priceless gift. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  460. Lynn Wittner

    12/05/2008 at 8:55 pm

My current back-up is a bit stone-age, as I just back-up to disks, but I forgot to do it for several months and my whole hard drive crashed and I lost everything. Having an external hard drive would be fantastic! It sure beats recreating everything from scratch.

  461. Shaun Davis

    12/05/2008 at 9:16 pm

I wish I had a good back-up system! Right now, all I can do is burn data to DVDs. This is a very time consuming process and absolutely NOT what I want to be doing, but it’s all I can afford right now.

I back up my MAC with Time Capsule and my PC with Norton and an external hard drive. A year ago, I had an internal hard drive DISINTEGRATE. (That means break into pieces!)

  463. Jason Lawless

    12/05/2008 at 9:55 pm

Currently, I have no consistent back up plan – I usually copy over files I need every month or so to a smaller external hard drive. If I won, it would allow me to backup my entire hard drive on a much more frequent basis.

  464. Lance Madigan

    12/05/2008 at 10:30 pm

We just about lost everything over the summer … the drive crashed, and the back-up harddrive got screwed up when I tried to reinstall the main drive with an old version of XP that wouldn’t recognize a harddisk over 30 meg (it was 160, and full). We recovered, but had to recover files folder by folder … and that took a LONG time. A real, external drive would be wonderful!

  465. Michelle Hohertz

    12/05/2008 at 10:39 pm

My current backup plan is that I keep a word processing document with the activation codes for any software that requires them. This file, files with settings for my e-mail accounts, my browser bookmarks, and my Roboform identities and passcards are all backed up in real time to two thumb drives using NTI Shadow. I use Goodsync to automatically back up these same items, as well as my e-mail files, music, pictures, downloads, word processing documents, and other data too to two external Hard Drives (I don’t have one big enough for everything).

I use my laptop to take minutes for several nonprofit Boards I serve on. Losing those minutes would be devastating, so I immediately copy them to a flash drive after a meeting finishes, then transfer the files from there to my desktop computer at home. Yes, I’ve lost files before, usually when a hard drive crashed, but the most recent instance was a bad OS patch, and my latest backup to an external HD was bad. I recovered some of my files from an earlier backup, but lost a lot of historical copies of content from websites I had built, and a lot of word processing documents.

This prize would give me the capacity to simplify my backups.

  468. Jay French

    12/05/2008 at 11:21 pm

I use an external drive as my main data store. I have a second, larger external drive as a backup to the first external drive, I just connect it on an occasional basis for updates. Every year or so, I buy a new, larger external drive to become the backup and migrate the old backup to regular use. This prize would fit right into the pattern.

I am a self-employed photographer. My old computer crashed before I was able to back up 5 clients photos plus some personal photos. I was just sick about it. I still get upset thinking about it! Now I download the photos and copy to cd’s immediately (which is VERY time consuming to say the least). I really must get an external hard drive to back up to save myself time and trouble. This is an awesome contest. Thanks!

  473. Joseph Perozzi

Between myself, my better half and the kids we use dvd’s for back-up. It was be great to have something of this capacity for all of us to use to back-up our data.

  475. Brian E.

    12/06/2008 at 12:42 am

Thanks for the giveaway…My current backup solution is to burn the occasional CD/DVD of important docs & family photos, etc.; it is not a very efficient system and I hope to switch over to an external hard drive in the near future to preclude the disaster that I know is eventually coming my way !!!

  476. Veronica

    12/06/2008 at 12:49 am

Yes, unfortunately about a month ago I lost ALL of our family pictures and ALL of the graphics I have made for my business in the last ten years. Devastation is the only way to describe what I feel. The real tragedy is that I have a little back-up hard drive AND a 4 gig jump stick and had everything backed up on those. The little hard drive died on the same day as my laptop (no virus, just old age and natural causes I think)and the jump stick has disappeared into the abyss. Very sad. Needless to say, I know so well the value of back of my data and don’t ever want to do it again! Right now on my computer, I have a few of our family pics that I have been able to get from my blog as well as a few graphics. The most important info I have right now though is my first novel that I have been slaving away at—there’s no way I want to lose that.

My 13 yr. old daughter, the computer whiz, saved everything onto cd’s a few months ago, because our computer acts like it will crash at any second. However, she is not a whiz at labeling. I have a stack of cd’s and what’s on them, I haven’t a clue. I’d hate to lose the precious stories she has written, that would be tragic! I feel like I need to print them all out to make sure I got them, but there’s enough to fill a library, I think.

  481. Deci Worland

    12/06/2008 at 5:36 am

I use an external hard drive for my desktop. I am buying a laptop for my hubby for Christmas and this would be a great go-with.

  482. Geoff K

    12/06/2008 at 5:51 am

I’m embarrassed to admit that I have a very dysfunctional and primitive means of back-up — I use a combination of several low-capacity flash drives that I have picked up for free at technology fairs over the years and the old-fashioned method of emailing files to myself or using online storage like Yahoo’s briefcase function. I really need to upgrade my back-up system, so I appreciate the chance to win these terrific items!

  483. John Fatica

    12/06/2008 at 6:21 am

I don’t keep any critical data on my computer. I really would like backup space for pics and music. Currently I save files to a DVD disk-and that’s it. Since all of my children have ipods I suspect that my hard drive is going to fill up faster than expected. Hope to see this item next to my Mac real soon. Thanks

  484. Vinod Kumar

    12/06/2008 at 6:27 am

I am a Macbook user with only 160 GB of internal Hard Disk Capacity.
I do not have external Hard disk for backing up important stuffs.
I use pendrive to get data from others so i cant use it as a backup device
The only option for back up is burrning DVDs thats also not reliable
because most of the time the DVD get scraches and it looses important datas..
This package will help me a lot as it will end up my backup problems…
i will have no fear of loosing my important stuffs……and the capacity is enough for carrying data from different computers..

  485. Isaac A.

    12/06/2008 at 6:56 am

Right now I back up my info on CD’s, this would help me store my info when I’m out of cd’s, or sometimes I’m too lazy to burn my info to disc.

  486. Katherine

    12/06/2008 at 6:59 am

I currently back up to DVD every few months. Not the greatest of processes, I know. Winning this would be fantastic and so much easier, more reliable and less time consuming.

    Well my backup scenario sucks.

I have 300GB of data that needs to be backed up however I have no portable HDD and it would take way to long to back it up online.

If I had this then I would never have to worry about losing my data.

  492. James

A second drive would help so I could have one for both my computers.

  494. chris shafer

    12/06/2008 at 9:18 am

right now i have almost 2TB of data for my desktop with only 75% of it backed up, then I have a laptop that has only critical documents backed up. this bundle would allow me to back up my laptop fully and make more of a dent on my desktop’s backup neds.

  495. Lincoln Mulkey

    12/06/2008 at 9:25 am

    12/06/2008 at 10:09 am

I already lost a bunch of my stuff on my computer before, this would be helpful because I wouldnt be forced to save things by sending them to an email or saving them on a website. It would be both easier, and better.

  498. Deborah

    12/06/2008 at 10:16 am

Backup plan?? Uh…what’s that?? No, seriously, my “backup” is simply to email to myself files that I want to keep forever. Yes, it’s a pain in the keester but without an off-the-computer backup plan, it’s the only one that I have. Winning this would provide me a way to change all that. I need it!!

  499. John Deal

    WANTED: Backup plan

LOL! I seriously am in of a way to backup all of my data! I don’t really have a backup plan besides saving a few important things to my flash drive and occastionally emailing myself files that I want to save. Having a way to backup everything on my computer would be great!

My hard drive crashed a few months ago and I lost everything on it, except a few important files that were saved to my flash drive and some photos that were still on my memory card. I didn’t have anything backed up…and sadly, I still don’t have a backup system. I would really hate to lose all my family history data, digital photos, and videos! This would be a wonderful way of insuring that they’ll never be lost again! Thank you for this wonderful giveaway!

My only backup is a teeny-tiny 1 GB Flash Drive. Not enough coverage, I know it. My boyfriend’s computer recently crashed, and he lost EVERYTHING, the computer is completely un-re-bootable. We rely on thumb drives, cd-r, and the computer’s internal hard disk.

This would be a great win. Thanks!

  523. joanna smith

My current back up system is so old fashioned! I copy files onto CD’s and so just burning CD’s is how I back things up. It makes for so much unnecessary clutter! This prize package would help me immensely because it would be a much more efficient and easier way to manage all my files. I basically am concerned about losing all of my large image files. I create digital art using fractals. I create the fractals using all of my original photographic files. I have to admit I have lost sleep in the past worrying that one day I am going to lose them all, the ones I have not backed up and it would really be a nightmare for me because I have put so much time and effort in creating some really cool art. Thank you so much for the opportunity to enter. Happy Holidays!

Every few months as I amass more data I find myself needing to buy new backup drives. I’ve got about 5 now, and most are too small for purpose. The one I’m using at the moment is so cheap that it whines like a violated goat when it’s working; at least I always remember to turn it off…

I copy my files to another hard disk, but this would make that a lot nicer…

The CD Drive on my puter broke so I can only backup by e-mailing files to my other computer.

I have a backup drive but it’s getting full and I’m going be starting video editing soon, which takes up a LOT of space! This would be perfect!

I currently use flash drives but find that they are not nearly large enough for my folders, PowerPoints, etc.

I had a major harddrive crash on my PC earlier this year. I lost a lot of tems that can never be replaced like pictures of my kids. I have so many photos and so much music that I worry about it happening again. I’ve tried burning my photos to CD, but it’s kind of a hassle, so I don’t do it as frequently as I should. My music isn’t really backed up at all at right now. I know – sad.

My backup plan is to save to DVDs and flash drives. This would help me make sure all of my files are saved because I don’t have a lot of room to save to and this would save a lot of time as well.

My current backup setup is a second hard drive on my computer running a second operating system, so that if one hard drive becomes corrupt I can still access it using my second boot OS.

I am a traveling man so my records including laptops get lost or misplaced in transit. Backups for my PCs are necessary.

I actually have no back-up scenario…except for maybe emailing files or pics. I think winning those would sure ease my mind a bit when it comes to pictures and documents that I just love!

My current backup scenario is to copy my files to a flash drive. This prize package would help me because I would have more room to protect my data.

I just bought a new computer and haven’t yet worked on a backup process. I need to backup and transfer things from my almost-kaput, old computer, and I guess to do that I would make CDs. I would love a more convenient solution, like an external hard-drive. Right now, I feel pretty insecure knowing that my writing could be wiped out the next time I turn on my computer (old). I should know better, a previous computer actually caught fire and I lost my files. The more I talk about this, the more nervous I am. I am going to end this comment and go see if I can do something to save my work. Thank you!

Let’s just say that my current backup scenario consists of 3 hard drives and many dvd’s and cd’s. As you can see, I need help! I would be nice to have all of my stuff on one drive. It would save me a lot of searching!

Backup plan? What backup plan? Oh! You putting everything on DVDs and having no idea what is what since you have a huge stack of them? Well then if that’s what you mean then THAT is my backup plan! Winning this would turn my life around and give me some more physical storage space when the DVDs have been disposed of! It would also help greatly with Time Machine which I haven;t used yet!

Currently I have a far less than ideal backup scenario using time machine, though very selectively as the external hard drive is small.

I’m using a USB 2.0 Western Digital 320GB Passport External HDD. It’s now down to a little over 16gb Free so it would be great to be able to upgrade to a much better HDD so as to really take advantage of the media streaming functions of my router.
