Get More Browsing Real Estate on a Netbook Screen
Speaking of compromises and Netbooks, jkkmobile has put up a helpful video that shows you how to uncover some valuable screen real estate when using the Firefox browser on the tiny screen. jkkmobile’s hints and tips (sans plug-ins and add-ons) will certainly save you a scroll or two when you are net booking your way around the web. He says this is Tip 1, so maybe he’ll be offering more tips in future videos.

Probably the best solution for netbooks (bonus for netbooks already preloaded with Linux) is to use a browser that functions via keyboard shortcuts, so there is no extra buttons and menus taking up precious screen real estate. I’m using that type of browser; it’s called Conkeror and it uses Mozilla’s XULRunner. It’s pretty stable, and almost 100 percent of the screen is devoted purely to the webpage, with just one small statusbar and input text area (for typing in commands) at the bottom. Then, if you don’t use window decorations and employ more keyboard shortcuts… it’s very much possible that you can 100 percent maximize the use of your screen without *any* UI element getting in the way.
I don’t use a netbook, but my X61 tablet is touch-enabled (so the screen resolution is smaller), so I share the concerns of netbook owners and definitely want to get the most out of my screen space. The tips you referenced on Firefox are good–I used to use them–but I think keyboard shortcuts could go a long way to solving the screen real estate problem on netbooks.
