Gmail 5.0 Arrives as Android 5.0 Release Nears

A few weeks ago reports and leaked videos surfaced suggesting the all-new Gmail 5.0 app for Android was coming soon with a completely revamped look and feel, as well as support for Outlook and Yahoo email accounts. Today though, Google’s silenced all the doubt and released Gmail 5.0 on the verge of the Android 5.0 Lollipop release date.

Google has been busy updating many of its popular Android apps to support the new Android 5.0 Lollipop update, and its accompanying material design styling, and today Google Calendar and Gmail finally received their overhauls, and updates are rolling out as we speak.

The new Gmail offers more than just a fresh lively new look, it’s now the home for all your email accounts in one. The regular “email” app of old has been removed in Android 5.0 Lollipop, and GMail will now support IMAP and POP3, meaning you’ll need one app for all your email needs.

The brand new redesigned Gmail for Android has been completely tweaked with a more modern look, sleek interface with smooth animations and transitions, tons of improvements, and of course support for other email clients. This is the Gmail we’ve been waiting for, and it’s now available from the Google Play Store.

The updated Gmail app will support all Android 4.0 and above devices, so most users will be able to take advantage of the new design. It is rolling out as of this afternoon on the Google Play Store, but Google mentions users can expect it to arrive over the course of the next few days. They slowly roll these updates out to all users, so if it doesn’t arrive today don’t worry, it’s coming soon.

With the all-new Gmail you can add all of them at once, giving you an integrated inbox showing all your emails in one easy and convenient place, with a new design to go with it . This should give users no reason to use other apps for email on Android, and have everything neatly integrated in to Gmail.

Aside from a complete visual overhaul and integration of other email options, Gmail is for the most part the same. All the options, features, settings, notifications, and swipe to clear features remain the same, they just look a bit different.

Once installed simply hit the 3-line menu button on the top corner and tap “add account” to easily add another Gmail, Yahoo, Outlook or other POP3/IMAP email accounts in seconds, and manage everything under one roof. It’s a neat approach and a great new look users will likely enjoy.

There’s also a pretty new 2-panel tablet layout that takes advantage of the larger display on a device like the Nexus 7 or new Nexus 9, so give it a try and let us know what you think.
