Halo 5 Release Date Revealed In Mysterious New Trailers

In new videos out this week, Microsoft finally reveals the Halo 5: Guardians release date for its Xbox One console. According to the Halo 5 Spartan Locke and John 117 commercials, Halo 5: Guardians will arrive on the Xbox One October 27th 2015.

The commercials revealing the Halo 5 Guardians release date appeared on YouTube last night. Both debuted during The Walking Dead, a popular television show that attracts some of the same crowds who’ve flocked to retail stores to pick up copies of Halo in the past. Microsoft later posted both trailers and confirmed the Halo 5: Guardians release date on its Xbox Wire news blog.

The first ad for Halo 5: Guardians is called “The Cost”. Each version mirrors each other, a play on what seems to confirm the dual nature of the upcoming game itself. Last year, Microsoft confirmed that gamers would spend some of their time playing as Agent Jameson Locke in Halo 5: Guardians. Locke was first introduced in last year’s Xbox One Halo release: Halo: The Master Chief Collection. Locke appeared in the game’s bundled video series.

In one version of the advertisement we see John 117 surveying the destruction of what looks like an entire city. Above the city we get a look at what could be the Infinity, the starship that featured heavily in Halo 4. John 117 slowly walks over to a statue where Locke lays immobile. John raises his pistol and asks if being a hero was worth it. The mirror commercial runs along the same lines, but John 117 lays immobile while Locke asks why he’s betrayed humanity and more.

The two trailers match the tone of what we’ve heard teased about Halo 5: Guardians in the past. In comments posted to Xbox Wire, 343 Industries’ Bonnie Ross says that her studio wanted to “amaze players with the sheer size of the worlds and battles they’ll experience, even as they question everything they thought they knew about its heroes, marvels and mysteries.” Beyond these two new Halo: 5 Guardians video trailers, there’s a new podcast online at the HuntTheTruth website that appeared last week and kicked off all these teasers and story reveals. The HuntTheTruth audio clips will run as a podcast all the way until June.

Ross goes on to say that 343 Industries “can’t wait to début the game” at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, which aligns with the ending of the HuntTheTruth podcast. In reality, we already know a lot about Halo 5: Guardians.

Microsoft first revealed it was working on a new Halo game for its Xbox One platform a few years ago. Halo 5: Guardians won’t come to the Xbox 360, marking the first time a Halo game has been available exclusively on the Xbox One. With Halo: The Master Chief Collection, 343 Industries and Microsoft rolled out an early test of the game’s multiplayer experience. In Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer we can expect every player to be able to run quickly around a specific area. Instead of completely missing a jump and having to start over, Halo players can grab the edge of a ledge and pull themselves up the rest of the way. This sounds simple, but wasn’t available in past versions. Halo 5 Spartans have advances suits with built-in jets that allow them to turn their entire body into a weapon, something that John 117 simply couldn’t do in past games.

Again, for now, we only know that Halo 5: Guardians is coming to the Xbox One on October 27th. It seems very unlikely that we’ll see a version for the Xbox 360, but Microsoft hasn’t said anything about a version for the PC.
