I’ve pushed the envelope and burnt the candle at both ends this week to bring you, yesterday’s “The Shift” video, and today’s video review of what we lovingly term The Stormtrooper: the Fujitsu U1010 / U810 Ultra-Mobile PC! Both were promised and as such both were delivered. These videos have been much anticipated so with the burden of your buying decision in mind I have made the humanly impossible, possible. If you pay close attention you will notice that I am in the same attire for this video, as I am for The Shift Video, as I am for the Nova SunPad video – which is no coincidence as I filmed and edited them all on the same day! (Plus currently uploaded my TechED Speech which I will post shortly!)
Anyway, back to business! The Fujitsu U1010 / U810 UMPC is a special machine. I blogged about it being a real kiddie pleaser and with mixed emotions I can report that I still feel the same. It is so small, so cute, and so overwhelmingly concise that it makes other UMPC almost seem featureless. The screen converts, the keyboard types (albeit better with thumbs) and the screen really does favor the pen input!
Buyer beware when it comes to this device as it is a Gedgeteer’s gadget and has the ability to make a sane person crumble. Unlike the OQO with all its pretentiousness (read: $$$$) the Fujitsu U1010 / U810 is more of a must-have than a wanna-have. Without ever wanting to buy one myself I must admit that by the time I had to return the unit I was trying to look for any number of reasons to find the funds (hope my wife is not reading this!)
As usual sit back and enjoy the ride as I take you through one very desirable, yet un-pocketable, device.
Machine specs (as tested):
- Windows Vista Business Edition
- Intel ® A110 Processor NEW 800MHz
- DDR2 1024MB DDR2 533MHz
- 1.8″ 40GB
- 5.6-inch SuperFine WSVGA, 1024 x 600 pixels
- Intel ® PRO/Wireless 2915ABG and Bluetooth ® v2.0
In summary I think this device has the ability to command respect; it has come in at the right price, with the right specs. Had I of had the device without ever seeing The Shift (I’m taken aren’t I) the chances of me buying one would be higher! It is however a great kiddie Tablet, or Vertical Market Tool. Either way I believe the future is bright with these sort of devices.
