Head to Head with the Viliv S5 and Viliv X70

Published

on

vilivjk The Viliv S5 UMPC has certainly captured a lot of attention and it looks the Viliv X70 will as well as Dynamism has announced that the 7 inch X70 (the S5 has a 5 inch screen) will be available for the same price of $599. James Kendrick has been giving them both a once over and has put together a comparison video that shows the differences and similarities between the two devices.

Following along in the comments to the post you’ll see that what I have suspected that the digitizers in the Viliv devices are not the best for Inking, Too bad for the Inkers. Either of these devices look like they would be a handy note taking device if you could really use them for Inking. I’m sure that won’t dampen the enthusiasm many have for the device, but for us Inkers it diminishes it a bit.

With Windows 7 on the horizon, which will run on netbook-level RAM and processors, wouldn’t it make sense for Viliv or someone other company to make a device very similar to the X70 form factor but that has palm rejection technology and is built for inking? One of the downsides to both the X70 and the S5 (and with many of these type of devices) seems to be the difficulty in inputting using the onscreen keyboard. Couldn’t that issue largely be solved if the device was built for inking and utilized ActiveWords and/or ritePen? Seems like a lightweight, good battery-life device like the X70 with good inking capability would be the perfect companion for trips and being out and about. Or is there already something out there that I’m missing? The P1630 is the closest thing I know of, but it’s a little bigger and, or course, much more expensive.

they should just put an ntrig digitizer, or better, the new wacom dual capacitive-touch/penabled digitizers. the x70 form factor is an excellent inking form factor.

I agree with many of the comments. There needs to a device with this form factor and good inking cababilities. I wonder how an Siso Tablo or a Duo Pen would do on these devices. I posted this on JK, maybe you guys have some comments on these devices.
    Thanks

What would be the incremental cost to add an active digitizer to this $599 device?

are there any options for a small inking tablet right now? Old motion ls 800 and the too thick (IMHO) fuji p 1600 series is all I know. How about asus r2h or one of the amteks? Oh–whatever happened to the tablet kiosk i7330–wasn’t that going to fill this gap?

I was wondering the same thing. That’s kind of what led to my original comment on this post. I’m not aware of anything with a small, light form factor besides the P1600 series. Seems like a definite space to be filled. Maybe that’s what Apple’s planning with the rumored Mac tablet.

i had an ls800 for a few years. it was a very good inking slate. unique. i was hoping for a successor, but moved to an oqo 2. after a year and half as my sole computer, it really is a little too small and, especially, too slow for inking (poor cpu). nevertheless, these were the only small devices with an active digitizer. beggars can’t be choosers.
