How to Add a Gmail Account to iPhone

If you have a Gmail email account and an iPhone, here’s how to add your Gmail account to your iPhone to access your email while on the go.

Gmail is one of the most popular email services around, and the iPhone is one of the most popular smartphones on the market. Together, they can create the ultimate combination, but you need to know how to set it all up first. Luckily, there are a couple of ways that you can add your Gmail account to your iPhone. Choosing one or the other will depend entirely on how you prefer checking your email and what kind of user interface you want to use.

One method is adding your Google account to iOS and then using the built-in Mail app to access your Gmail email. The second method is the easier way, where you simply download the Gmail app from the App Store. There are pros and cons to each, but I’ll show you how to set up Gmail using both methods, and from there, you can decide which one would be best for you.

Using the Built-In Mail App

If you want to use the built-in Mail app in iOS 8 on your iPhone, here’s how you can import your Gmail information to the Mail app and sync your emails so that you have a seamless experience.

First, open up the Settings app and then scroll down and tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Up toward the top, tap on Add Account.

You’ll see a list of options available, including Google (Gmail), Yahoo, AOL and Outlook. Choose Google, obviously.

On the next page, you’ll type in your name, email address, and the password to your Gmail account. Tap Next in the upper-right corner when you’re done and iOS will verify the information.

Once verified, the next page will have you select the information that you want synced from Gmail, including your email, contacts, calendar and any notes. Toggle any of these that you want and then tap on Save in the upper-right corner.

From there, you can open up the Mail app and see all of your email just like you would see it on Gmail. It’s really simple to set up.

The nice thing about this method is that the Mail app is fully integrated into iOS, so it works well with other apps that you go back and forth from. However, it doesn’t have the features as the Gmail app, such as labels and starring email. However, this is where the second method comes into play.

Downloading the Gmail App

The Gmail app includes many of the same features as the web interface, so going between the two is seamless and familiar. However, the swipe gestures that are found in the default Mail app make it a lot easier to navigate and manage your email, while the Gmail app doesn’t include this.

Personally, I like the Gmail app since the interface is similar to the web interface, meaning that I can get close to the same features on both platforms, and labels work the same as well, which is super useful. Likewise, if you think you’ll prefer using the Gmail app, here’s how to set it up.

First off, open up the App Store app on your iPhone and search for Gmail. It should be the first result that pops up, but if not, look for the app that’s developed by Google Inc., which will appear in small text below the app’s name.

After you download the app, open it up and go through the set-up process. It’s fairly self-explanatory, but the most important step is obviously entering in your gmail email address and the password. After that, you’ll be treated with a small tour of how the app works and how to use it.

From there, once you access your inbox, you’ll be treated with a similar interface to that of the web interface, just on a smaller screen and more suited for tapping rather than clicking. However, if you’re familiar with the Gmail web interface, you shouldn’t have any problem learning how the Gmail app works.
