If you need to add a second Google account or Gmail to your Android device, this guide will show you how. When setting up a new Android device this is one of the first steps. However, later on adding a second account can be confusing for some. With that in mind, below are some quick and simple instructions.

Whether it’s for business reasons, personal, or just another account for the kids, this is something many will need to do. The question recently came up from a friend, and I realized it may not be easy for some to understand the option in settings.

Thankfully adding a second (or third) account is extremely easy. It doesn’t matter what version of Android or who made the device, the steps are the same. If you need to Gmail accounts, this can be done the same way as our steps above. Just add another Google account to the device and you’re done.

As a reminder, it’s always a good idea to use strong passwords, and a password manager. That way dealing with more than one account on your device is easy. The steps below will show you how to add a second account to your Android device, sync all its information, or even remove one if needed.

Instructions to Add Account

First things first, head to the settings menu. Do this by sliding down the notification bar and hitting the gear-shaped settings button. Or find the app labeled Settings in your application tray. Now, you just need to navigate to Accounts and fill out the information detailed below.

  • Navigate to Settings
  • Find and tap on Accounts
  • Then click on Add Account
  • Select Google for the account type
  • Now enter your email address and password

Users may be prompted by a 2-factor authentication, then there’s an option to add payment information and agree to any and all terms. Just hit next through all of that, or add what you’d like and we’re all done.

Now, owners can go back to the Settings > Accounts section and select the tab labeled Google to see both accounts. In here you can enable or disable what syncs, like contacts and more.

Other Details

To remove the account, hit the same “Google” option and tap the account, then hit the menu dots at the top right and select remove account.

It’s also worth mentioning that you’ll need to open Gmail at least once for it to recognize and sync emails from the second Google account. From here you can change its settings and manage anything you need.

You can toggle between the two accounts in Gmail with ease too. Just hit the three-lines menu button at the top left, and a slide-out menu will appear. From here tap your email address or the downward facing arrow and select your second account to view it. Users can also use that same dropdown to “Add Account” for Gmail if they’d like.

Either way you’ll be adding another Google account and Gmail address to your Android device. That’s it, enjoy. For more articles like this checkout our How To Guide Portal.
