How to Fix Bad Moto Z Battery Life

The Motorola Moto Z and Moto Z Droid are two of the slimmest, powerful smartphones ever made. They’re a marvel of engineering, combining thin edges and the latest technology to create an Android phone that can be whatever you need it to be with just the right accessories. These devices aren’t immune from issues, despite great reviews. Bad Moto Z battery life can ruin any experience with the device.

It doesn’t help that bad Moto Z battery life is one of the most talked about Moto Z problems. The Moto Z Droid offers a big battery and a shatter-proof display. The Moto Z has neither of these things. This makes the device slim. It also guarantee’s that users will have to deal with bad Moto Z battery life at some point in the future. To be clear, battery life can also be a problem for the Moto Z Droid, but its extra capacity helps it a great deal.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to deal with bad Moto Z battery life. From software tricks to taking advantage of your phone’s unique ability to add accessories quickly through Moto Mods, there’s no reason you need to suffer through having a phone that constantly dies on you before the end of your long day.

Check Battery Status

The first thing that you should do to fix bad Moto Z battery life is look into what’s causing the drain.

Opening the Settings app.

Scroll down until you see the Battery option listed in your settings app. Tap on it for a breakdown of what is eating through your battery life.

You can tap on the entries in the list to get a breakdown on how to prevent whatever it is from draining even more of your battery life. For example, tapping on Bluetooth recommends that you turn off the wireless technology to fix bad Moto Z battery life.

Use Battery Saver

Android Nougat, the current version of Android otherwise known as Android 7.0, includes a great Battery Saver feature that you can use to improve bad Moto Z battery life.

Go to the Settings app. Look for the Battery entry in the list of options.

At the top of your screen, you should see an option to setup Battery Saver. You can decide when it turns on automatically. You can also use the toggle at the top to switch the feature on at any time. Your Moto Z or Moto Z Droid will turn it off automatically the next time you charge up.

Use Airplane Mode

A very good way to improve bad Moto Z battery life is to turn off all the different radios inside the phone that are used for communication.

Swipe down from the top edge of the Moto Z display. Now tap on the downward-facing arrow on the right edge of the notification shade. Doing so should reveal a list of options for you to quickly toggle.

Tap on the option labeled Airplane Mode.

Note that because all your radios are off, you won’t receive a single phone call or text message. You’ll also be disabling your mobile data and Wi-Fi. This is why you should only use the feature if you find yourself in a situation where all you need to do is read something in an app, watch a video or listen to music.

Manage Your Display

The display built into your Moto Z is the biggest battery hog it has. That’s why Android Nougat carefully manages how bright your screen is. It should always be kept bright enough that you can see it and dark enough that it is not a power drain.

Swipe from the top edge of your display to reveal the notification shade. Now swipe again for a list of all quick options. At the top of this window is a scroll bar that lets you decide how bright or dark your device’s screen is. Use it to temporarily address bad Moto Z battery life.

Consider Your Apps

The Google Play Store has millions of great apps. Many of them won’t do a lot of harm to your battery, but some of them just might. If you remember installing an app from the Google Play Store just before you started having to deal with bad Moto Z battery life, uninstall that app.

Tap or hold on an app icon, then drag it to the trash can that appears along the top of your screen to get rid of it. You can see a list of recently installed apps and recently installed app updates in the Google Play Store.

Restart Your Moto Z

Try resetting your Moto Z by pressing the power button until it offers you an option to Power Off.

Reset Your Moto Z

If a reset still hasn’t fixed you bad Moto Z battery life, it’s time reset your device entirely.

Open the Settings app.

Look for Backup & Reset in the list.

Now select Factory Data Reset.

Before using this option, be sure that everything on your phone has been backed up. It’ll delete every app, game, photo or music file.

Use a Moto Mod

The Moto Z family’s best feature is its ability to let you add new features to your device quickly. If bad Moto Z battery life is still a problem for you after trying all these solutions, perhaps it’s a good idea to look into a Moto Mod to address the problem.

    The Moto Z and Moto Z Droid are the same phone; the “Droid” part is just Verizon’s branding in the USA. What you’re referring to as the Moto Z Droid is actually the Moto Z Force. You should probably know this if you’re publishing articles about Android phones.
