How to Fix iOS 7.1.2 Problems

Published

on

Apple’s iOS 7.1.2 update was released to fix lingering iOS 7.1 problems and problems that the iOS 7.1.1 update brought along with it. However, in the days since its release, we’ve heard numerous iPhone and iPad users complain about iOS 7.1.2 problems and here, we want to tell you how to fix some of the more common issues.

In March, Apple finally took the iOS 7.1 update out of its beta program and delivered it to the public-at-large. The iOS 7.1 update, as many iPhone and iPad owners know, was a much bigger update than most. While it wasn’t on par with iOS 7, it did deliver new features, design tweaks and performance enhancements on top of a ton of bug fixes.

And while iOS 7.1 was pushed out to solve iOS 7 problems, we soon learned that the iOS 7.1 update brought some problems of its own. iPhone and iPad owners ran into an assortment of issues after the iOS 7.1 update including battery life woes, Wi-Fi issues, problems with iMessage, random reboots, and more. Those just scratch the surface.

In an effort to quell these issues, Apple rolled out iOS 7.1.1. The update rolled out in April with several fixes on board. Unfortunately, iOS 7.1.1 brought some problems of its own and failed to fix lingering iOS 7.1 issues. We heard a ton of complaining in the weeks leading up to July and it now appears that Apple listened to those pleas.

iOS 7.1.2 on iPhone 5s

Last week, Apple rolled out iOS 7.1.2, another bug fix update for iOS 7.1 and an update that offers a trio of bug fixes for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users. You can probably see where this is going.

Yes, the iOS 7.1.2 update also delivered problems for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners. We’ve touched on a number of those issues which range from abnormal battery drain to problems with cellular data.

With an iOS 7.1.3 update out of the picture and an iOS 8 release slated for the fall, those struggling with iOS 7.1.2 problems must gamble on temporary fixes to alleviate some of these problems. While we don’t have the remedy to every single iOS 7.1.2 problem, we do have some potential fixes for common iOS 7.1.2 issues.

Keep in mind, these fixes aren’t guaranteed to work but they are certainly worth a shot if you performance has taken a hit after installing the iOS 7.1.2 update on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

How to Fix iOS 7.1.2 Installation Problems

iPhone and iPad users were extremely vocal about iOS 7.1.2 installation problems on release day and in the days after the update’s arrival. The issues are similar. During the installation process, the iOS 7.1.2 update hangs up and refuses to complete. We’ve already pointed out this fix numerous times but there are still plenty of people that have yet to upgrade to iOS 7.1.2 so let us point it out again.

iPad Tips and Tricks - iPad mini

If you are unable to install iOS 7.1.2, all you need to do is perform a hard reset. To do this, hold down the power button and the home button for about 10 seconds, until the Apple logo shows up and the phone reboots. This should dislodge this issue and should allow you to continue on in the iOS 7.1.2 installation process.

We’ve received tons of positive feedback about this fix so we’re confident that this is going to solve most, if not all, iOS 7.1.2 installation issues. As we pointed out in our reviews, we installed iOS 7.1.2 without problems.

How to Get Better iOS 7.1.2 Battery Life

iPhone and iPad owners consistently complain about the negative impact that iOS updates have on their battery life and iOS 7.1.2 did not escape their wrath. There isn’t a guaranteed fix for these issues but there are a few things that we recommend trying in an effort to calm these issues.

iphone-5s-1

There are a few things to try but the first is a quick and easy fix. Here is what you need to do:

  1. Tap on Settings.
  2. Tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and Tap on Reset.
  4. Tap on Reset all Settings.
  5. Enter passcode if prompted.

This will reset all of your settings so the process is going to take a few minutes to complete. And while it’s not guaranteed to fix your battery life problems, there is a chance that things will improve.

If that doesn’t work, check out our extensive list of iOS 7.1 battery life tips. They could help resolve your issues and who knows, they might just help you formulate some better habits.

How to Fix iMessage Problems in iOS 7.1.2

iMessage problems have popped up after every single iOS 7 update. Some users are able to receive iMessages but not send them and some aren’t able to receive them or send them. We’ve run into iMessage issues in iOS 7.1.2 ourselves. Messages, for whatever reason, are delivered hours later or not at all. Fortunately, there are some fixes to try.

imessage

The first thing to try is toggling iMessage off an on. If that doesn’t work, try rebooting the phone. If neither of those work, it’s time to reset the device’s network settings. (Both of these have worked for us in the past.)

To do that, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. The phone will reboot, and while you’ll lose your stored Wi-Fi networks, reentering a Wi-Fi password is a small price to pay for working iMessages.

How to Fix iOS 7.1.2 Wi-Fi Issues

For the past two years, Apple’s discussion forum have been rife with complaints about Wi-Fi issues. iPhone and iPad users have complained about a wide variety of issues from grayed out Wi-Fi to unstable connections. From the look of things, it appears that many of those issues persist in iOS 7.1.2.

There is a chance that the fixes that worked in iOS 6 will work with iOS 7.1.2. Users saw success with these fixes last year and they are worth a shot this time around as well.

We also suggest trying to reset the network settings on the iPhone or iPad. To do that head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This isn’t a guaranteed fix but it’s certainly one to try if Wi-Fi isn’t playing nice.

If that doesn’t work, it could be a problem with a router. We suggest making sure the router’s firmware is up-to-date. If it is, try resetting it. Some people have had success with that. Older routers seem to have issues with newer iOS updates so it’s possible that a router, not iOS 7, is to blame.

How to Fix Problems with Apps in iOS 7.1.2

While we haven’t heard a ton of complaints about app performance in iOS 7.1.2, there are enough to warrant a mention here. App instability is common after iOS updates and there are a few things that iPhone and iPad owners can try in an attempt to alleviate them.

iPad Tips and Tricks - New Users

First, make sure your applications are updated. Developers like Facebook are getting better about keeping their apps up-to-date with bug fixes and enhancements and you’ll want to ensure your apps have the latest fixes. You can simply turn on automatic App Store updates if you don’t want to do it yourself. This will update your apps automatically and ensure that they are always on the latest version with the latest bug fixes.

We’ve also heard that flipping off Background App Refresh has had positive results. To do that, head to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and flip it off. This actually might help your battery life settle down as well.

Other Solutions

If none of this works and you can’t find a solution on Apple’s discussion forums, we have two recommendations. First, take the iPhone or iPad to a Genius Bar at your local Apple Store. They’ll help you diagnose the problem.

iPad mini Retina 6-Month Review

If you don’t want to do that, well, then it might be worth performing a factory reset. Factory resets will wipe your device clean.

To do that choose Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. This will wipe everything from the iPhone or iPad, so back up before you do this, even though we recommend not performing from a restore. Setting up all of your accounts and apps is time-consuming, but it may be the fastest way to fix bad iOS 7.1.2 problems.

Ipad 2 wifi issue. I have to say, I continue to see comments about resetting your router. I am sorry, total load of bs, you should be ashamed. That may work when your home(it doesn’t) what happens when we leave home. I am finding it quite awkward asking strangers to reset thier wifi for me! I believe Apple is just making thier older devices work poorly as so you go buy the newer hardware. Sorry Apple, just lost a customer. Idiots

I just had my iPad repaired at a repair store. The Wifi was grayed out. After many attempts to reset and call to apple. The independent repair facility fixed it by causing the system to go into over temp mode. To do this he used a blow dryer. By causing the system to shut down and restart under this condition fixed my problem.

Ok so i did the hard reset thing… and it messed up my phone. Everything was reset, my songs and apps were all there, but there were a bunch of stuff i had changed in settings that i now need to change again. So thank you for that… i have to spend an hour of my timne re-doing what i already did because you guys were to stupid to write down what it does, allk you said was it will fix it…you never said it would reset all the setting to default, including your background and saved wifi passwords!

Poor to say the least. The suggested solutions to problems is to reset everything – what a cop-out that really is.

The problem is that Apple release updates to their software that don’t work like they should. The reality is, downloading the update through iTunes and resetting the device into recovery mode to perform a proper upgrade of the phone works wonders. The only problem is, it is a blank phone and people lose their information.

The best thing Apple (and all other phone OS providers) can do, is to release less minor updates and 3-4 major updates that have been thoroughly tested to ensure the bugs are out – and make the updates start from scratch – restoring only contacts, photos, music and apps. All settings left blank as they were from the beginning.

While this may seem like a PITA for most users, only having to do this once every now and again is better than having to do it anyway each time a developer farts and releases a new version of the same buggy software.

Major issues with my phone since the last update. The imessages errors and more importantly the touch pad is ERRATIC to be nice about it. I can barely unlock the phone as if I touch one part of the screen it hits another, very frustrating when trying to upkeep the social media sites, send messages and even just unlock the screen. I’m regretting ever having downloading the updates. Anyone know how I can backtrack to an earlier version? I have an Iphone 4s.

The WiFi problem (slow, in-fact sometimes worse than slow) has not been fixed after resetting the network settings, or changing router settings (it is regardless of the network I connect to).

I have heard rumours that this might be to do with the temperature sensor needing to be reset/recalibrated if it has got too warm at some point due to it and the WiFi chip being closely coupled in some way.

Right after I loaded the iOS 7.1.2 update, my IPhone 5S has been dropping calls like crazy, music is coming on by itself, the Voice Control keeps popping up and the battery drains in minutes. I never had a problem with my IPhone until I installed the latest update. I was trying to holdout until the release of the IPhone 6. At this point I may start shopping for something else.

    With iOS update to 7.1.2:
iPad 3 battery charging starts/stops even with Apple barbed cables.
iPad 3 has noticeable lag when entering text, even for short things like passwords
Random freezes–sometimes lasting seconds, sometimes minutes, sometime seemingly indefinite, but at least >1h. Suspend+ home key restart required.
Have also had crash on iPad twice, plus multiple Chrome crashes and App Store not updating apps when “update all apps” or individual app selected.

iPhone 5 battery life much shorter, esp. with location services on
iPhone 5 charging is also hit and mis, sometimes working for a few seconds, then cutting out, then working again. Seen this on two dif. USB chargers which work fine with non Apple products and worked fine immediately prior to update.
3rd party cables and car charger which previously worked fine now not working.

The solutions I have found that work so far include: carry external power source (mine is by MyCharge). This still works via USB port for both (but it’s built-in 30 pin connector not recognized anymore). This plugs into AC, and has a USB plug which let’s me charge it using the USB plug in my car that no longer is good enough for iOS 7.1… Adds considerable bulk, but at least the phone works.

I am replacing the iPhones and iPads at home and in my company with Android devices. These also let me add 64gb-128gb storage whenever needed just by adding micro-SD for a fraction of the cost between Apple product versions, and many are dust/water proof. Much larger variety of choices (too many???) in devices as well.

The only thing I still like about the iPad and iPhone is their size. While 10″ Android tabs w/ quad density graphics are now in same size letter paper ratio (widescreen made my earlier Asus tablet awkward to use) that the iPad has, and are a good size/weight, the trend towards ever larger screens in Android phones is nuts. Major Android vendors need to offer full power handsets with 4.5″ screens.

Ok People so history shows this is not the first time Apple has released an update filled with flaws!

Which makes one ask the question how has this happened “are the programmers making a simple over sight?”

I doubt it very much, of course there better than that! so why would Apple allow this latest 7.1.2 to rollout with bugs

that disable the features we depend on and love the most?

    Battery life
    messaging
    camera
    WIFI
    contacts
    simcard failure

any of these if you do get the update to install that is!

So let me put this theory to you, of all the affected users abut 15 to 25% will get straight online looking for

answers while the rest will not!! “what will the other 75% of people do”?

“THEY WILL HEAD TO THE NEAREST APPLE STORE”

have ever seen an Apple store? have you ever been in to an Apple store? with a sea of over eager sales reps

all to keen to help, these stores with way too many staff need traffic!!! and you know they’re getting it this month.

I don’t know Im just saying, and with the pending release of a new product hhmmm

Apple have had a history of super seeding Hardware with software updates aswell anyone whos been in it from the start would have to know this…

they’re good but not that good, I think Im done….

On my iphone 4 update brought problems with gps (some apps claim getting position is not possible; other show position from where I’ve been a few days ago), and with cellural data (won’t talk to 90% + of BTS’s).
