How to Go Back to iOS 9 from iOS 9.1 Beta

Published

on

You can go back to iOS 9 from the iOS 9.1 beta that Apple offers to the public and to developers with a specific process and a small amount of time set aside.

Overall the process of downgrading from iOS 9.1  to iOS 9 is very similar to restoring your iPhone to like new condition, but there is one special step you need to take.

This guide will show you how you can go back to iOS 9, or whatever the current version is, from the iOS 9.1 beta that Apple currently allows users to try.

You may want to go back to iOS 9 to avoid beta issues like buggy behavior, sluggishness or app compatibility, which are all things we see with the first several releases of a major upgrade.

Here’s what you need to go back to iOS 9 from iOS 9.1.

iOS 9.1 to iOS 9 Downgrade Prep

You’ll need a few things to make this work and you’ll want to set aside an hour of time. This process may go faster, but it’s best not to be rushed when you are doing this.

Hopefully you made a local backup of your iPhone to iTunes on the same computer you want to downgrade on. You cannot restore a iOS 9.1 backup on a device running iOS 9, so you’ll need that older backup. Here’s what you need;

  • Computer with Recent Version of iTunes
  • Internet Connection
  • Lightning Cable

When you go back to iOS 9, you will erase the device — so a backup is very important unless you want to start from scratch. You don’t need to find an iOS 9 download to make this work, as long as you are doing this downgrade after September 16th you will end up with iOS 9 or whatever the current version is by default.

How to Go Back to iOS 9 from iOS 9.1 Beta

As long as you plan to go back to the current version of iOS 9 that Apple offers to the public this is a pretty easy process to follow. You just need to make sure that you press the right buttons for the right amount of time. In the iOS 9.1 to iOS 9 downgrade directions we use iPhone, but these directions work with the iPad or iPod touch as well.

1. Turn off Find My iPhone before we get started. Go to Settings -> iCloud -> Find My iPhone -> Off. Unless you turn this off you cannot reset the phone.

2. Plug your iPhone into your computer and wait for it to show up in iTunes.

3. Press and hold the home button and power button for 10 seconds.

You will see this message when your iPhone is ready to downgrade from iOS 9.1 to iOS 9.

4. After 10 seconds let go of the power button, but keep your finger pressed on the home button. This is known as putting the iPhone into DFU or recovery mode. It allows iTunes to erase the device and install the current version of iOS.

5. iTunes will show a pop up saying your iPhone is in Recover Mode. Click OK.

Restore the iPhone or iPad to factory settings to go back to iOS 9.

6. Go to the iTunes page that shows your iPhone and Click on Restore iPhone.

After the restore completes the iPhone will walk you through a very short setup and ask if you want to restore from backup. You can choose to restore from iCloud or from an iTunes backup. In most cases you will want to choose restore from the iTunes backup you made before you installed the iOS 9.1 beta.

If you have problems using this method to go back to iOS 9, you might need to locate the iOS 9 download for your device manually. This is a ipsw file that you can find from several websites. After you download it you will need to repeat the directions but instead of a normal click on Restore iPhone, you will option click on Mac or shift click on Windows and then choose the iOS 9 file you downloaded.

DFU mode is only intended for if the device will not restore or be recognized by the computer. The safer way is to do a forced recovery mode by powering the phone off completely. Once off just hold down the home button only and plug into the computer and you will get the same recovery mode message and be able to restore.

iTunes 12 may have an even quicker work around than described above [From the screen shots, looks like y’all be using an older iTunes simply as a descriptor on how to accomplish the process]. Instead of completely restoring from DFU mode, it also gave me to the option to simply “Update” my phone ‘back’ to 9.0. Didn’t have to spend all that time restoring.

If I wait and skip updating my public beta until it become official release, would that be a good idea to do downgrade?

For example, right now I have iOS 9.1 public beta and apple realeased iOS 9.0 and to do the trick I will keep backing my iOS 9.1 up and make sure not updating it to the future release. When iOS 9.1 become official release that time I do the basic restore and restore backup ..

I hope you got the idea ..

You should know if you downgrade you will lose photos, music etc. You try this at YOUR OWN RISK!!!! do not blame others if you do this. If you lose your most precious selfies!! thats on you!! even though their not worth saving anyway.

DO NOT DO THIS! BACKING UP WILL NOT GET YOUR STUFF BACK!

HERE IS HOW TO GET YOUR STUFF BACK:
-It will tell you your restore is out dated, so:
-Set up as new iPhone (no, your stuff won’t be there yet)
-Go back to the Beta Software Program website
    -Sign up again
-After downloading the profile and doing everything again, download Beta 5
-After it is COMPLETELY downloaded, go back to iTunes
-Go to Restore Backup, and your backup should be there/

Yes, you won’t be able to go back to iOS 9.0.2, but do you want your stuff back or a new iPhone?
