How to Use Siri with Google Maps Without an iOS 6 Jailbreak

Published

With two words iOS 6 users can use Siri to get directions in Google Maps instead of Apple Maps without an iOS 6 jailbreak or hack.

Google Maps for iPhone is now available for users on iOS 6 looking to replace Apple Maps. Apple doesn’t let users change the default Maps app in iOS 6, but there is one way to work around that limitation and use Siri to get directions in Google Maps.

The workaround is thanks to Google Maps’ public transit support which lets Apple Maps link to the app. As Tom Rich of Jailbreak Nation shows in a YouTube video the process is a relatively simple one.

To use Siri to get direction via Google Maps users just have to ask Siri for directions and add “via transit” or “by transit” at the end of the sentence. For example, open Siri and say “directions to closest Apple store by transit.”

The voice command will open the transit menu in Apple Maps and give users the option to open the directions in Google Maps. Once in Google Maps it’s another tap to change the directions to car or by foot. The process takes a few more taps than Apple Maps, but the directions are typically more accurate in Google Maps. In areas without public transit, the app defaults to driving directions.

iPhone users can also use Siri to open Google Maps directly, and then use dictation to input locations they want directions to. That method still requires a number of additional taps. There is no method to open Google Maps with directions as the default, at least not in iOS 6.

The Google Maps workaround isn’t optimal, but it’s a very simple solution that doesn’t require an iOS 6 jailbreak. There is an option for Jailbroken iPhones to select default apps for some functions. There is no available untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 5 and iOS 6. With Siri in iOS 6, users can easily launch apps and work around a few of the limitations in iOS 6.

Mate, this tutorial of course takes in account you’ve got Google Maps installed on your iPhone. It’s just if you wanna use it via Siri instead of launching the app by tapping on it..
