How to use the Galaxy S5 Flashlight

Samsung includes a Galaxy S5 flashlight app with the smartphone, and makes it easy to access in certain modes, but it can be tricky to find at first.

You’ll need to add the Galaxy S5 flashlight widget to your home screen for a quick tap to turn on the flashlight. There is not a simple way to add this to your lock screen so you will need to unlock the Galaxy S5 to use the flashlight.

On your Galaxy S5 home screen tap and hold on an empty space until you get screen that lets you edit your home screens. You will see your home screens smaller than normal with Wallpapers, Widgets and Home Screen settings at the bottom.

Tap on Widgets and scroll to the side until you reach one that says Flashlight. This is a 1×1 icon that is the same size as a single app icon. Tap and hold on it until the widgets fade away and you see your home screen again. Drag it to the spot you want it and lift your finger up. You can tap and hold on it to reposition it or to drag it up to the top to delete.

From now on you can tap on the Galaxy S5 Flashlight widget to turn the camera flash into a flashlight. The widget is green when the flashlight is on, and black when it is off. You can tap it on and off as you need it.

This is a no frills Galaxy S5 flashlight, and you cannot add it to the lock screen easily, but you can add it to the home screen so that you can always get it. Or you can add more than one widget so that it is on your most used screen.

If you need more options you can search the Google Play Store for more Android flashlight apps, but make sure you don’t get one that uses your data to serve ads frequently.

Using the Galaxy S5 flashlight app will use the battery faster, as the LED is on for a long period. Other than lower battery life this shouldn’t impact your device.

If you turn on Emergency Mode by holding the power button down and tapping on Emergency Mode you will now have a flashlight shortcut on a simple home screen with a power saving mode that will use your battery slower than normal. The video below describes this.

It’s buried, buried, buried. It’s actually listed under “settings” in the widget menu, so keep scrolling down. It says that in the article, but at may not be as clear as it should be.

Thank you so much for a clear explanation that worked. Three other sites had me pushing on icons that didn’t exist on my wife’s phone to get to the flashlight widget.

I eventually managed to do this but not without coming out of easy settings into standard. Having put icon on home screen there, it was then inaccessible from easy mode.
Quite by accident, I found I had access to it in easy mode via the magnifier which I already had on there ( which icon, by the way, once on home screen seems to be permanently there in original place you put it)
