How to Get YouTube Back on the iPad in iOS 6

Published

on

With iOS 6, the official YouTube application for the iPhone and iPad has vanished. And while Google released an official YouTube app for the iPhone, users of the Apple’s iPad weren’t so lucky. That is, until December, when Google finally released iPad support for the official YouTube application. There are also some nice alternatives that users can take advantage of as well.

Appel’s iOS 6 update pulled the stock YouTube from iPhone and iPad owners. The app has finally made its return though and it joins a host of alternatives that iPad owners can use to access YouTube content.

Here, we take a look at how to get YouTube back on the iPad in iOS 6.

Read: How to Get YouTube Back On iOS 6.

YouTube on the Web

The first option is rather simple and all it requires is a web browser like Safari or Google Chrome, the latter of which was just updated to support Apple’s new iOS 6.

photo

iPad users can use YouTube through the web.

In the web browser, users can type in www.youtube.com and they will be taken to a web interface that offers a web interface that allows users to not only view YouTube videos, but also manage playlists, subscriptions, videos, messages, and more.

So, while it’s not an official application, it still offers quite a bit of functionality.

YouTube App for iOS

On December 4th, Google updated its YouTube for iOS application with support for both the iPhone 5 and the iPad. This means that owners of the iPad and iPad mini can now download and use the YouTube application like a full-fledged YouTube application. What’s more, it also updated the app with video support for Apple’s AirPlay feature.

photo1

The application also brings a host of other features to the table including the ability to tap the logo in order to bring up a Guide of a user’s channels, an option to add and remove videos from Playlists, Clickable links in the descriptions of videos, and improved accessibility with the app’s VoiceOver feature.

This app is free and is likely the one that iPad owners will want to install.

McTube – YouTube Client, Downloader & MP3 for iPad

Another great option for those that aren’t in love with the official YouTube applications is an app called McTube. McTube is a well-done YouTube client that offers both a free and a $1.99 Pro Version which gets rid of the ads and adds the ability to download unlimited videos.

youtube3-575x431

Its full list of features includes:

– Support iPhone 5, iPad Retina
– Cache videos and watch offline
– HD support, up to 1080p
– MP3 Player with background mode
– Search for Videos, Channels, Playlist
– Categories from YouTube
– Filter videos by region
– Rate, share and comment on videos
– Subscription, Playlist, Favourite, Watch Later, History

McTube boasts a four and  a half star rating after being reviewed nearly 17,000 times. It’s a viable alternative to the official YouTube application and one that iPad owners will want to take a look at.

Jasmine YouTube Client for iPad

Jasmine YouTube client remains an option for those that don’t wish to use the official version of the YouTube application that can be found on Apple’s App Store. Jasmine is a free application that is currently available to iPad owners.

photo2

Jasmine’s interface is extremely simple and easy to use and it allows users to do many of the same things they can do using the web interface or if they were using the official application.

photo1

This means that it offers the ability to search and browse videos and it also allows users to manage favorites, playlists and subscriptions. It also features Retina support for the new iPad amongst other features.

The full list includes:

– Smooth and responsive interface
– Night theme & dimming support for browsing in low light
– Full support for managing playlists
– Play audio/playlists in the background while you use other apps
– Remembers your position when returning to long videos
– Parental Controls to curate content and restrict video discovery (PRO)
– Browse and discover channels
– Post comments and replies
– Aggressive filtering for comment spam and channel promotions
– Supports AirPlay
– Share videos via Twitter & Facebook

AirPlay support is huge for iOS users who own several devices.

The developer also offers a Pro version of Jasmine that offers a way for users to contribute to the developer. Jasmine doesn’t feature any advertising at this point and donations will go a long way in preventing them from popping up in the future.

photo3

In addition, it comes with extensive parental controls that allow parents to control what their kids watch on the iPad.

Jasmine boasts a four star rating on the App Store, out of nearly 2000 reviews, and we recommend it as a YouTube alternative.

I’m pissed, too. I mean, where’s all my favorites? And why are we the last ones to know? Couldn’t anyone give us a heads-up that they were taking something away that had already been given to us?.. This is what updates do now? Why not pillage our pictures or music and randomly erase some of that to. This is ridiculous.

Why is Apple differentiating You Tube app from iPad by removing it on upgrade and is available on iPhone. Is it a discrimination among their own products, or is it You Tubes popularity on iPad making them rethink on revenues.
It was a shock to see the You Tube app not in the App Store.
Requesting to get the app immediately on iPad, make us feel like we are one family iPhone iPod and iPad.

90% of my iPad usage was browsing the YouTube “app”. I had been putting off upgrading all week because I knew I was going to lose YouTube but my iPad started playing up so I figured it may have something to do with not running the update, alas I’ve ran the update & no more YouTube. I am totally gutted! It’s beyond ridiculous. I doubt this would have happened if Steve was still with us? (At least I like to think that’s the case?) :-(

Thanks APPLE! All the more reason to switch to Android! It seems that after Jobs died NOTHING apple has put out is worth a damn. They TRULY lost their vision of what their customers need and enjoy.. which is strange giving the amount of “Spying” they do on their customers! The iPhone 5 is a “classic” example of the crap that Apple has put out and tries to blind their corporate sheep as “new” technology when the Samsung Galaxy Note had it all along. I feel so duped and a little lighter in the wallet for it too… What’s that old saying? Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me…. I’ll NEVER buy another Apple product again. Besides — I am sick of “jailbreaking” my device to get the good/cool stuff that is out of the box on Android! See Ya Apple!

Thanks for this info. I can’t believe Apple stole YouTube right off my machine, only for me to discover when my teething toddler woke up screaming in pain at 5am. Usually a couple of Sesame clips sooths her. I had been unsure about getting an Apple product with this iPad, and now I am sure I made a mistake. Apple is behaving childishly and erradically. When I get my new phone this month, it will be a droid.

JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW….the iOS6 official Google YouTube iPHONE APP (which is free in the app store) works just fine on the iPAD!
When you launch it on the iPad, it will be the size of the iPhone on the screen BUT you can hit the 2x button in the corner and it goes to full screen without much loss in quality at all.
It will nicely tide you over until the iPad version arrives.

  24. mart0225

    10/03/2012 at 10:01 pm

Why not blame Google for no iPad app? They obviously knew about Apple dropping the old app because they had the iPhone app ready to go. So they obviously knew a new iPad app was needed.

    10/04/2012 at 10:50 pm

Stealing the YouTube App that you already paid for was an easy collaboration for the new Apple/Google/ComCast mega-corp. digital complex. They just gave you a little “We Love You – Free OS Upgrade” pop-up and didn’t happen to mention that the cool-aid was poison. Not to worry though, as you will get your YouTube App back as soon as YouTube gets down on its knees, turns over their company keys and gives the Big-3 advertising control and minute by minute user royalties.
It’s all about the $$$. Hourly YouTube hits are astronomical and every hit can be sold to advertisers. So, the strangle begins. Apple took hold of one end of YouTube’s access rope and Google grabbed the other and as OS updates steadily wipe away the old access routes, YouTube begins to gasp for air.
So, I don’t know about you, but I’ve changed my mind about my 30 yr. old love affair and loyalty to Apple. I have dropped my plan’s to buy a new Apple lap top and new I-Phone and letting Apple control my TV. Apples vision will soon fill our TV screens with the same add spam pop ups that Google and Comcast now fill our email windows with. By default Apple now controls Google, and Google controls ComCast. It’s an undeclared digital monopoly and through that colaboration Apple intends to strangle the world.
Early on Windows won the battle for machine market share. But Apple intends to win the digital world war. Via device interconnectivity and controlling the “Cloud’s”, they work to control your I-Phone, your I-Mac, your I-Book, your I-TV, your I-Pad, all your communication life-lines and the money that you are worth to anyone will then be bought from them. When they win that war, ” Spoils go to the victor “. But remember, they were once sinking with out Steve’s vision and soon they will be taking on water once again. Why ? Because, “Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely “. Power hungry tyrants cannot differentiate between what they see in the mirror and the truth about themselves.
Yes I know, I know, I’m paranoid. But they stole my YouTube didn’t they ? Then again, who knows ? Androids and Satellite may live to fight another day !

      10/05/2012 at 12:02 pm

I too was really pissed with the YouTube app disappearing, until I went to YouTube via safari. The display was unlike the desktop computer display, instead to my surprise it is more like the app display that I had gotten used to. All my favourites that I saved using my app are right there ( I thought I had lost these) so despite the app not being there it would appear that the YouTube site for iPad is a good substitute. Better than I had been expecting.

I agree. We should sue these people. When we bought iPad Utube came with it. We have all the right to continue to use this app. We paid to buy the outright. This is not good. Too much money hungry is not good. You won’t be able to take all the money with you, can you? Try to do something for the society. This is what happens when the owner is not there….

Jobs would be rolling over in his grave. Some dink at apple dumped google maps and YouTube, just cause they got a bug up thier b-hind. Sure, Jobs might have dumped google too…if he had a better alternative, but to dump them with no alternative (to YouTube) or a completely junky alteritive (to google maps), means Apple is getting dumber the longer Jobs sleeps gentle in that good night. They gotta stop being idiots. Like the last iPhone release…”The biggest thing to happen to the iPhone, since the iPhone”, give me a break. For such a grand advertising hype, Jobs would have had a projector on the phone, heck, he would probably had a teleporter on the phone if he thought anyone would trust AT&T with the transport of their disembodied molecules. Sorry, this last iPhone was not worth that hype. Jobs would have said something simple like, “Yep, it’s a better iPhone”, and left it at that while he worked on something spectacular to use the “Best thing since sliced bread” type ads. I just don’t think apple needs to be hyping stuff. Seems like someone is messing up over at Apple.

I am extremely upset and disappointed with Apple. I purchased the iPad for my husband who has had a stroke and lost his ability to speak, read and write. With a year of training and a great application I also purchased he is able to communicate many things. YouTube is one of his main resources that has given him back part of his life through music and he learned to search, save favorites and retrieve. That was a challenge for him. You can’t imagine how difficult the task has been for him. I upgraded his system to find YouTube gone. What do I do now, begin training him with Jasmin and frustrate the crap out of him because Apple decided that it doesn’t care about who, what or why we the consumers use their products.. The least they could have done was warn that by upgrading, some applications would be lost. I can’t even imagin if I would have lost his communication App.. thanks for making our lives more difficult Apple.. You are the best and worst at what you do for the public.. SAD

Sophia..I am facing the same problem as you…My husband is a stroke patient..After going thru so much, he finally learnt to use the YouTube on IPad..and enjoying the music videos..Now I have lost it after unwittingly upgrading last night. Did you find a solution to this?…I am trying hard to get Youtube and make life a little better for him. Thanks. Rajy

I am outrage by this update, I was much happier with the last YouTube, apple change this now!

    • mart0225

      10/14/2012 at 2:37 pm

What do you complainers not understand? Apple is not the only one to blame here. Google makes the iOS 6 Youtube app, not Apple. So why aren’t you directing your outrage at them?

Frankly, I think the iOS 6 YouTube app sucks. The interface is difficult to navigate and Airplay barely works. Google chose to mirror the entire iPhone screen onto my television instead of just the video, which the previous did. Also, why does Google display the controls on my TV? They aren’t touchable, so what’s the point? I have the iPhone in my hand, so that’s the only play Google should display the controls. Apple gave Google free reign to make its own YouTube app and Google screwed it up.

With the new Apple Maps app, Google bears a large responsibility for a poorer user experience. Google wanted to plaster ads all other the app and harvest users’ personal data. They also would not give Apple access to the much faster and more efficient vector map tiles.

Jasmine my ass,, and the iPhone YouTube app sucks wen using an iPad it looks cheap and low quality not mentioning the advertisement that I had to forward . On the other hand my Samsung rocks,,, so far,,, and seriously the update were meant for iPhone users ,,,they sure would beneficial from the maps now.
Apple be the big guy and renew the contracts with google .

    • mart0225

      10/18/2012 at 3:18 pm

Why should Apple kowtow to Google? Google insisted on contractual stipulations that Apple could not agree too. And vice versa. For one, Google wanted to collect users personal information. And another, Google wanted to add more advertisements to both Maps and YouTube. It also didn’t want to give the iOS maps app parity with their Android Maps app. Google’s choice. And Apple’s choice to not accept.

Thanks so much for this. I’m a latecomer I know but I’ve been struggling with YouTube on an iPod touch for months now. Anytime I wanted to play a vid the app would drop WiFi. It would take about 3 minutes to reconnect. After googling & asking on Apple Support Communities I finally came across your blog & have installed Jasmine. Nice UI & no dropped WiFi. Video suddenly plays fine.

It’s been a very frustrating issue & I note several other people have it who don’t seem to have found a resolution.

So thanks a lot, I appreciate your help over this one. I might have a look at McTunes as well just as a comparison but I’m just relieved to have video back & running.
